https://blog.humblebundle.com/2021/04/23/a-note-about-sliders-and-our-bundle-pages/

I went to buy a bundle recently and saw that there were no sliders (for those unfamiliar, you could choose to the exact cent where your money went to the publishers/developers, charity, and humble with further options if there were multiple publishers/developers/charities) for me to decide where my money went.

Apparently, they removed the slider without warning last month and attempts to find out why were met with statements saying that they would look into the issue.

I guess this is the end of an era. It is pretty cool that Humble stayed true to its core for over a decade, but it was probably a matter of time before things would change under the ownership of a billion-dollar, publicly-traded corporation. I know that they had changed some things before like Humble Monthly becoming Humble Choice and other things, but they kept what Humble originally was intact. I just figured the change would be gradual and not abrupt like they did.

This is unfortunate. I always liked HB for their cheap bundles of a bunch of games, but after they shifted their main focus away from bundles towards monthly subscriptions, and also getting bought out by IGN, the overall quality of their service dropped considerably.

Nowadays I find myself using Fanatical a lot more (and probably will be doing so even more now that one of Humble Bundle's main selling points is getting watered down like this).

That kind of makes me want to just cancel my membership instead of pausing more months than not.

Humble bundle has sucked for a while. When it first came out and it was a pay what you think its worth it was cool, but not surprising that the big donators eventually didnt feel like doing it any more

The interesting thing is that the new default split, as shown by the graphic in the blog post, will be 85% publishers/developers, 10% Humble, and 5% charities. This seems to suggest that they might have received some pressure to increase guarantees to those that offer their games in a bundle.

That surprises me a little because there's a number of sites that bundle steam keys that I feel if you do so in Humble, you shouldn't set high financial expectations or just go with another optio .

This topic made me check my purchase history of bundles...
And despite me checking every 2 weeks for a new bundle, turns out the last one I purchased was in December 2019, which had Soul Calibur VI and Yakuza Kiwami, and it was a follow-up to the amazing bundle that was a month earlier, which had Crash N-Sane Collection and the Spyro trilogy for I think it was $10

And...that's it. Nothing worthwhile since.
I also used the shop like 3 times because it doesn't use local currency (which Steam does and it's making it more expensive for me) but it's missing so many games so most games I decide to buy I pay premium on Steam

will be 85% publishers/developers, 10% Humble, and 5% charities

Hmm interesting. If Humble gets just 10%, it isn't THAT greedy after all

I honestly didn't care too much about stuff like the storefront, the monthly bundle slowly getting worse, I expect stuff like that to a degree. This is a huge blow though, it defeats a lot of the purpose. I get that we are at the point where it is less and less justifiable for developers to include their games but still...end of an era for sure.

The charity sliders were all they really had left, in my eyes. Their bundles have never been the same since the purchase and there are many less expensive places now if all you want are cheap games.

I mean I can't speak with a deep understanding of how game sales work I'm just talking surface level impressions here. But my gut says without the slider, devs are guaranteed a larger cut since people probably increased the charity proportion at their expense pretty frequently. And Humble is always in the position of needing to attract more new devs that are also in-demand to their platform.

I dont remember what the old default was but personally after the buyout I'd frequently do something like 50/50 devs/charity and with a 15% cap on charity I assume that's still 75% devs. So I would imagine this is going to be a significant upgrade for them?

edit: Also while this is anecdotal, who knows how much this actually impacted devs, but I would occasionally see people talk about using Humble to buy games from devs/publishers they don't like while setting the dev% real low

I have no idea how Humble Bundle even worked. I think I paid like a dollar for 20 3DS games one time and I don't understand the economic logistics of that being possible.

oh. i signed up for the monthly thing precisely when someone on this board mentioned crash and spyro were in it

and then they changed their plan so i kept it to get grandfathered in but just pause it repeatedly 'cause i actually don't need that many games

(i also only enjoy like 2-3 genres of games TOTAL so most games in each bundle are irrelevant to me anyway)

Humble has had some really good ones occasionally in the monthly but the quality overall has been notable. Almost all other bundles kinda sucked.

Apparently they got enough backlash to relent on this

The language still isn't the most reassuring (I mean is it ever really from companies) but for now the sliders are remaining untouched
