The obvious response is that this is the government distorting the market at the ultimate expense of the economy as a whole

The government should absolutely be giving assistance, but you need to put in more work than that the defend this in your own belief system

Those employers laid off or fired their workers to begin with so I certainly have no capacity to feel for them when they complain nobody wishes to work for them for less, but its definitely also the case that many right now are opting for gig economy jobs rather than service jobs because both the pandemic, similar pay, and less micromanagement and having to deal with awful customers or managers. So even with the government distortion argument, its pretty clear these jobs need to make adjustments to their model to remain competitive in the job market. Ive seen some places around here start to offer hiring bonuses or advertising their relatively competitive starting pay, but nowhere seems to understand the working conditions are a huge part of the aversion.

People aren't going to want to work a tip based job in a time when people aren't financially secure enough to leave tips. Nor is it ever made clear to patrons that workers taking care of take out orders also aren't being paid a real wage and so these workers know they are coming into a job where they wont be fairly compensated. They have no reason to put themselves in a shitty situation.

I can't blame her too much. Quitting out of protest not only leaves you without a job, but can be career suicide as companies will consider you a risky hire. She's sacrificing her livelihood to take a stand that no one will care about in 48 hours.

Nah, she's equally to blame. She did so willingly without so much as a peep until now, so I doubt she suddenly grew a conscience. That's not at all an equivalent example. Tucker Carlson is in a significantly higher position of power than a news article writer. New article writers, especially for trash, are a dime a dozen. They are easily replaceable. There isn't a good replacement for Tucker Carlson. He has great power in media and continues to choose to use it for the worst possible ways.

The polling data doesn't really support that marketing of ideas is the issue, either. what are the major tentpoles of, say, the Bernie campaign that polls underwater with democrats? On the other hand, the polling data absolutely supported that the major factor in a Biden voter was the perception of who can beat Trump. That doesn't suggest the issue is progressives haven't convinced enough people - it suggests the issue is that democrats don't necessarily vote for what they personally want, they vote for what they think other people want to best defeat the Republicans. And to some, this may not even seem like a problem, because some people think defeating Republicans should always be more important than anything else, but then to suggest the issue is marketing and not...the fact that the majority of Democrats believe defeating Republicans is more important than a progressive agenda just seems like a joke. This goes back to my previous post - it isn't the average GOP voters who is fanatical with their votes. It is the Democratic voters who only think about winning with their votes above all else. The Republicans nominated Donald Trump because he was saying what the voters wanted, not tired establishment types like Jeb!, and there isn't any evidence they did it because they thought Trump had the best shot of winning. They just liked him the most.

Then certainly she could have tried to work for literally any other paper other than one owned by Rupert Murdoch, where she wrote primarily right wing trash her entire time there, right?
