And we're supposed to feel good about that?

I mean... yeah? That's like every movie ever. You cheer when the good guys kill the bad guys when the bad guys are trying to kill the good guys.

i mean this is a movie that asks us not just to feel good about the good guys murdering the bad guys, but about the good guys incinerating the bad guys, or slicing them in half from crown to groin, or blasting a hole in their torsos and then looking at the gaping remnants, or exploding their heads. don't think that morality is huge here.

It isn't the fighting itself that was scummy it was the before the tournament part. And it was the fact that the good guys were the initiators of those unsanctioned battles. Like the Goro Fight is completely morally justified because he is actually just defending himself and his family.

Hell all they had to do was change "Raiden teleports us all together in the specific combinations of our choosing" to "let's go to these places and lure them into attacking us again, but this time we'll be ready". And suddenly the morality of Earthrealm doesn't have to be thrown under the bus. The other option of course would be to cut out some of the crap in the middle of the movie and actually have the damn tournament in THIS movie. But even if they want to save that for later (fine) then they needed to do a make any attempt at all to establish how long until the tournament was supposed to occur. Because watching the movie I had no idea how long they were meant to be training for, but they made it sound like they needed to unlock their Arcana ASAP without giving any context for when ASAP would be.

It's just bad storytelling. And i'm not saying the story itself needs to BE good. By all means tell me a very basic story because at it's heart this is a popcorn action movie. But take that simple story and at least tell it correctly. By omitting anything that gives anything else context I just feel like there were never any stakes.

And wikipedia seems to think that the disconnected fights dictated by earthrealm WAS the tournament, which was my original impression of the movie but that doesn't make any sense either. It says "Cole proposes a plan to force Outworld's champions into single combat with Earthrealm's champions before neutralizing Sub-Zero together, forcing the tournament Shang Tsung tried to prevent" And I remembered a line like 'we'll give them a tournament' or something before the teleportation but it just made so little sense that I left feeling very unclear on if I was supposed to believe the tournament had occurred or not.

So even in the games you need like 10 straight normal victories to be really victorious? How come there are like 11 main games then so far? I mean don't Earthlings win the tournament each time?

The main series lasted to 7 games before they blew up the universe or whatever.

The DC game doesn't count I don't think.

And then 9 reset everything to the beginning.

Yeah, this is the weirdest thing to be hung up on. It's Mortal Kombat. The bad guys quite literally want to enslave and/or destroy entire realms of people. Are the good guys literally supposed to sit around and wait until it happens before they do anything? That has literally never happened in Mortal Kombat.

Weirdly, the tournament was never really a major factor in the game continuity- the only game in the original timeline to involve an officially sanctioned-by-the-Elder-Gods Mortal Kombat tournament was the first one, and the "ten wins in a row and Outworld merges with Earthrealm" thing was a retcon that came later- the game itself has no mention of Outworld or Shao Khan, instead claiming that Mortal Kombat was a Shaolin tournament that had been 'corrupted' by Shang Tsung.

MK2 and MK3 both involved Shao Khan trying loopholes to claim Earthrealm without winning Mortal Kombat, then MK4 through Armageddon mostly had other villains trying to conquer the whole multiverse rather than Earthrealm specifically.

It wasn't until the timeline reset in MK9 that we got a proper in-game representation of the Mortal Kombat tournament as a means of protecting Earthrealm from Outworld.

(Also, ten Earthrealm wins in a row doesn't mean Outworld is permanently locked out, it would give Earthrealm the right to invade Outworld and merge it into Earthrealm, which would probably still result in the entire human race being pulled apart by monsters)

I actually got pretty hyped because it seemed like that was going to be the power of black-shirt-blue-jeans-protagonist-man, but then it just turned out his power is like... an armor chestpiece? That's not even a power really, he could just like... put that on. You can even tell it's not part him, it's literally just a piece of armor.

Good thing Mileena attacked him in his armored back and not his bare neck or head when she had the drop on him or he would've been in real trouble

I found the movie mostly boring. Kano was the best part and some of the deaths were cool but otherwise, very meh.
