Just gonna be posting random thoughts here. Playing on PC. I love "souls type" games. Was playing The Surge 2 prior to this, but that game can't grab my attention.

-Never realized this was a Koei Tecmo game for some reason.
-The main character looks like a knock of Geralt.
-The first level...is not a tutorial level apparently
-I did the actual tutorial which is helpful because it did reveal certain aspects that were not present in the first level.

Finally arrived at the start of the game, and got my first death by the hands of a man in samurai attire. Enjoying the combat greatly, it feels (in terms of speed) between that of Dark Souls 3, and Bloodborne. I like the customization so far in terms of stances, and weapon types. Enemies individually are easy, but once a group gets locked onto you...I've died probably 5-10 times to the same mob. I also love that enemy stamina is visible. Made it to the second shrine so far. It's off to a great start.

The Surge games are weird. I liked the first one enough to finish it at least, and I like the idea of what it is trying with its combat to differentiate it from others in the genre, but the look and feel just isn't good.

Nioh just feels good to play.

Thats so funny, I also started Nioh for the first time yesterday.

Those two knights in armor guarding the door to the tower in the first level killed me like 10 times
Also the boss on the boat got me a lot too, I just cheesed him out with Rifles and arrows and was able to win that way. I'm running Axe as my main weapon and getting that close to him for any period of time was just...instant death

Yeah I took on everything on that initial level including those knights and didn't have any issues(or deaths), and thought to myself 'this is a bit easier than expected' but now I'm getting ganked by mobs in this first level lol.

The sub mission in the first real area was a lot easier than the main mission. Not sure if Im getting better at the game or my better equipment is carrying me, but it was nice to only die...maybe 5 times or so instead of the cumulative 50 I probably had during that first mission

I also have very limited experience with souls-like games, I put maybe 15 hours into dark souls 1 and got bored of it and that's all I've played. I'm enjoying this one more though

These games kick ass, full stop. They're also really hard to learn just because of how complex and deep their combat systems are. Once you do learn them, there's nothing else like it - it's almost like a Souls game that slowly morphs into a DMC game.

I hope you both enjoy! (Ki Pulse is your friend. Learn it, love it, master it.)

Combat is what has me hooked, and like I mentioned earlier, at least compared to The Surge, the game just feels good to play. Outside of obvious mechanic stuff, the animation and hit boxes seem very fluid and tight, for both the enemy and the player.

Currently using axes and spears right now, as that felt the most comfortable for me to use.

Beat Onryoki after about 8 times or so. Died a few times with only a couple hits needed, which would have been remedied by just stocking up on elixirs instead of going in with 4 each time. First level down, I'm level 10 I think.

The cat scene caught me off guard.

I also love and hate the Kodama aspect, but then I got the last one of the area and it notified me that I did have all the ones in the area. So I have no problem with it now.

Nioh 2 > Nioh 1 by a pretty good margin, but the first game still has plenty of fun in it. Enjoy!

Second mission and boss defeated. Once again, not necessarily the hardest thing in the world, died a few times, and once again I just needed to go in a little bit more prepared and won.

Leaning on using spears now, axes secondary. Missed a Kodama somewhere on that map.

Wasn't the biggest fan of the map, but I never really liked cavern style maps.

The sub mission ideas are ok for now, but I need to wait and see if they aren't just all the same thing of doing the same map in a different order, with a different kill target.

So yeah sub missions are kind of lame. They get you loot and items, but doing the same maps, but different isn't the most fun in the world. Honestly that type of mission isn't even the worst thing in the world, but it's compounding of what so far, I think is the biggest issue with the game. A lot of the level design is the same.

Not sure if this changes deeper in the game, but I just beat mission 5(I think?). The one with the centipede boss, and a lot of the levels are just turning into mini-maze types.

Mission 4 opening level is probably my favorite area so far, but after you beat Nue(fun fight) it turns back into this maze thing again. Mission 5 is more of the same but with poison now.

I love the combat, but this level design isn't appealing. Game started out fantastic, as of right now it's just in the 'good game' territory.

So I just finishing up some kodama catching, decided to use my collected spirit stones to see how much amrita I've collected and return back to mission select. Just used a Himorogi Fragment instead of branch and lost like 70,000. Oops. Haha

I know I'll probably get it all back in like 30 minutes, but these moments still sting.

Currently on the Ocean roars mission, really like the look of the level, but up to the first checkpoint it's layout is still basically the same the previous missions.

Nioh 1 is easily my favorite soulslike game that isnt made by FromSoftware themselves. The other ones I tried like Code Vein, The Surge and Jedi Fallen Order were not very good whereas Nioh 1 can actually compete with the weakest of the FromSoftware entries.

Even 2 is very good but feels more like an massive expansion than a sequel.

Defeated Umi-Bozu and mission 6.

I lit all the bonfires, but didn't realize what they were for until after I beat Umi-Bozu. Took two tries, I already assumed going he was weak to fire, and I had a ton of amulets on me.

Finished up the rest of Chugoku region including the sub and twilight mission(s). I thought the twilight mission was gonna be a bigger jump in difficulty that what it actually was.

Beat Iga escape. Overall ok level.

Beat Joro-Gumo, Yuki-Onna, White Tiger and Giant Toad, along with all respective sub missions. Yuki-Onna gave me those most trouble, but overall they were all pretty good bosses, but those did come of Umi-Bozu who is shaping up to be the worst boss I've encountered.

I'm going to keep doin the sub missions, despite them being boring, because every once in a while it likes to surprise and not be boring.

I need to go back and put more time into this.

The samey levels and enemies combined with the generic loot system really turned me off. As it stands it's one of my least favorite Soulslikes.

I agree for the most part. Like I said Im 25 hours in and the generic level design and mission type is starting to drag.

That said Im not entirely sure how long this game is supposed to be, so if its dragging now it can only get worse.

Just realized there was a country map...so I went back and cleared up some previous submissions that haven't been cleared yet.

Also because of the map/layout/mission select style it's a bit harder to gauge your progression, so it was nice to completely steamroll some of these earlier missions.

Level design and enemy variety are definitely both big weaknesses for Nioh 1. Thankfully they're both enormously improved in Nioh 2, even if the level design still ends up being a far cry from your typical From offering.
