I dunno, that's a hard choice.

Buckwheat pancakes are super tasty, especially if you mix in blueberries and have with maple syrup and almond butter. You also can't beat a stack of flapjacks with fruit, butter, and maple syrup.

Belgium waffles are great, too. A couple of them with butter and maple syrup...mmm.

French toast is also good, but I don't eat it as much as I used to. Although, fresh Brioche french toast with butter, maple syrup, and a little powered sugar? Pretty good, but a bit of a sugar overload.

anything you can put in pancakes, you can put in waffles. they also have a better plain taste, and work better with syrup.

I'd generally put waffles slightly ahead of pancakes in terms of flavour and texture, but they're also more work and slower to make (especially if you whip egg whites for them), giving the overall edge to pancakes (as in, if I'm choosing one to make, it'll more often be pancakes). French toast, I tend to consider separately, since it's such a different flavour (though it's often served similarly), but if I had to rank it with the others, I'd put it slightly behind, despite being the simplest to make by far. To summarize:

If they're made for me: Waffles>Pancakes>French Toast
If I'm making them: Pancakes>Waffles>French Toast

That said, if french toast includes bread pudding (them basically being the same thing and all), that gives it more of an edge. Bread pudding is fantastic. It's much more dessert-y, though, so counting it in this comparison isn't altogether reasonable.

Krazy_Kirby posted...

I can understand including them, since they can also be served with stuff like syrup, fruit, and whipped cream, but I'm inclined to agree. Biscuits/scones are very different from the other three, in terms of flavour, consistency, method... basically everything. If nothing else, making them is way more involved than making pancakes, waffles (except maybe proper belgian ones with whipped egg whites), or French toast, so it's decidedly less feasible to whip up a fresh batch to have for breakfast.

Pretty sure I have. I've definitely separated that many, if nothing else, which is way more work. For that matter, if you're routinely beating that many eggs, you should probably be using a mixer to do it, which takes out all the actual work entirely and frees you up to do other things.

Regardless, though, you're going to be beating roughly that many eggs for all three, especially if you're working on that scale. Nobody with the remotest understanding of the phrase "overdeveloped gluten" (which is a prerequisite for making decent pancakes) should even consider adding that many eggs to a bowl of flour without beating them first. With french toast, though, that's pretty much all there is to it (I'm comfortable saying that dipping the bread is roughly the same amount of work as dispensing pancake/waffle batter, so we can discount that step for all three), while pancakes and waffles require several additional ingredients and mixing steps, including much thicker batters that are both physically harder to mix and more sensitive to overmixing (read: there's more potential to screw them up). That becomes even more true if you're looking at waffles with whipped egg whites folded into the batter, which require added steps of separating the eggs, whipping them up, and the rather delicate, laborious task of folding them in without collapsing the batter.

So... my statement stands. You're not the only one here with food service experience, Sunny.

He's not. You can't buy premade french toast batter like you can with pancakes and waffles. Also french toast batter is 95% egg while the others aren't. Why he incorrectly thinks you use the same amounts of egg in all 3 is proof he isn't. Most pancake and waffle batters are "just add water" recipes. Those don't exist for french toast.

They are quite yummy. I just prefer waffles.

I've never really been into french toast...I like the idea of them, especially fancy ones at brunch places look interesting. But then if I ever see those, I'm out at a nice place and I'm usually more interested in getting something like eggs benedict, smoked salmon something, savory crepes, a croque monsieur, etc.

I never order out waffles (but I'll steal a bite if my bf orders chicken and waffles), pancakes, or french toast and I never make french toast for myself. I usually prefer savory breakfasts so I rarely make pancakes or waffles even.

Not that premade batter/mixes should be brought up in any conversation about "#realfood". That you think they're relevant here says a lot about the pancakes/waffles you make.

SunWuKung420 posted...
Also french toast batter is 95% egg while the others aren't. Why he incorrectly thinks you use the same amounts of egg in all 3 is proof he isn't.

French toast itself, however, is ~15-20% batter at most, while the others are 100%. My usual pancake recipe calls for one egg to make 10-12 small pancakes (enough to comfortably feed two people). One egg will generally make ~3 pieces of french toast for me, which is a bit stingy for two people. My usual waffle recipe calls for 2 eggs to feed two people.

So... French toast uses a bit more egg per serving than pancakes (at least mine), but a bit less than waffles. I think they all use the same amounts of egg because that's a reasonable approximation of the number of eggs consumed when I make each product.

SunWuKung420 posted...

No, most pancake and waffle batters are basic muffin/wet-dry method recipes. You mix your dry ingredients and your wet ingredients separately, then mix them together to form a batter. Again, I don't know why you're bringing up pancake/waffle mixes in a discussion about real food, but you really shouldn't.

SunWuKung420 posted...
Those don't exist for french toast.

Every single french toast "recipe" is "just add egg." Couple splashes of milk and some seasonings to make it more interesting, but it's never a more complicated recipe than pancake/waffle mixes (which, again, have no place here).

Putting eggs in biscuits is relatively unusual, actually. Not unheard of, since they provide a nice richness to them, but that's treated as an alternative to milk for adding liquid to it rather than an integral structural element (as they are in pancakes/waffles). The core of biscuit dough is flour blended with solid fat, usually leaving some larger bits of fat to create a flaky texture. Pancakes/waffles are based on liquid fat, giving a more uniform texture.

Really, muffins and other quickbreads are more like pancakes/waffles than biscuits are, given that they follow the same method and have similar recipes. Biscuits are quite different.

pionear posted...

Yeah, as far as methods go, French toast is very much an outlier from pretty much everything else. Really, the only reason it gets lumped in with pancakes/waffles is because it's typically served in the same way.
