The algebra 2 teacher has been absent for WEEKS, because she's also coaching the girls' soccer team and the team is pretty far in some tournament or other. They haven't been able to get a substitute because covid (lol) so the person they have in front of the class is some babysitter who literally can't even solve the problems. It really and truly is as ridiculous as it sounds. They watch a video of the teacher doing a couple math problems. The TA goes "uh did everyone get that, because I sure didn't." Then they do some practice problems on a worksheet where the answer key is wrong because the absent teacher sucks at math too. It's every bit as ridiculous as it sounds.

I've been working with my sister to overcome the ridiculous non- instruction she's been receiving and she can actually understand the material well once someone actually explains it to her and works through her misunderstandings (shocking!) But what are the kids without a Math Guy in their family supposed to do? My sister was saying she felt like this was as high as she could go in math, which is absolutely absurd. She's otherwise a straight-A student.

Like, do you know how fundamental algebra 2 is? These kids will struggle in precalculus and then calculus. They will struggle in physics and AP computer science. I can't believe they chose soccer over math. What a ridiculous school. I'm so mad.

If you send me the course's content, I might be willing to make materials for them. I can't promise that my video content will be substantially better than the teacher's video content, but I can verify that I at least know how to teach the material.

I appreciate that, I'll see what my mom thinks about that. She's talked to the administration, and they've only doubled down, so we're letting it go since my sister has to spend 2 more years there and they really don't want to create any unnecessary ill will against her from the teachers.

Yeah that's what we're doing basically, I'm teaching her with all kinds of online supplements. I wish I knew about this as it started happening because now we have a lot of ground to make up. I'm lucky that I actually know all the math.

Funny enough that was the teacher's advice too. Sister emailed "hi teacher, practice problems please?" Then teacher emailed back "Google it lol." Like no, YOU Google it and choose good search results. That's your job. Anyone can find a firehose of algebra 2 nonsense online. Curate it a little with your math knowledge. Augh.

This is pretty normal in the world of tutoring, especially among the non-Asian families. My off-the-boat and second gen types often hire help pre-emptively, but it's not in the culture for "American" families to pay for help until the parents realize they can't just wait for the kid to improve and finally blow the whistle.

Anyway, let me know if you're on exponentials and logs, because I've already recorded some stuff for that.

What are her plans after high school? If she's not planning on STEM, then the higher levels of math may not be necessary. (I sure wish I could get to calculus, but I got stuck in trigonometry and couldn't advance any further.)

Does the class have a textbook? Sometimes it's just easier to learn by reading

Calculus was when math stopped feeling good to me. Also, computer science barely uses algebra

What grade is algebra 2? I can't remember if it's 7th or 9th or whatever

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Calculus is the best

That's a very silly generalization to make

9th or 10th

More like 10th or 11th. More frequently 10th. It's only 9th in advanced programs.

I didn't make any generalization! I subjectively didn't enjoy calculus- i know it was just me being bad, but integration started feeling like a series of guess-and-check style problems (ie, here are the 30 methods of integration, just try each of them until one works). I did perfectly fine on ap tests but was unhappy the whole way

Again, I'm sure actual math people had better techniques

I couldn't remember what happened in middle school. I think there was a year of algebra, a year of geometry, and a year of something else, wasn't sure if it was another algebra

My spouse has a coworker who decided to only teach the novel he wrote himself about chilling out in Hawaii and plays guitar while the kids are testing. This is 10th grade.

He also decided to jump a fence and run away in a lockdown instead of locking down.

he hasnt been fired because the English department is already down 60% of its teachers due to the pandemic.

The moral of the story is some schools are just screwed right now and they know the teachers suck and nobody will replace them

Not much more to the story. There was a campus lockdown because of a nearby situation and he was in his planning period, so he bolted to the fence and hopped it so he wouldn't be stuck at school.

Ah yes, sportsball wins again. It was already steamrolling every single other extracurricular [e.g. beneficial things like theatre/art/music], so why not actual curriculum? Students only need to learn to run, with a touch of hand-eye coordination... they don't need math. /end sarcasm

I mean this happens. In my high school chemistry class our instructor had to have some kind of surgery that made them miss the entire 2nd and 3rd quarter. Our sub tried for about a week but it eventually devolved into letting us literally watch Jerry Springer and work on other classes work for literally months.

Oh absolutely. Some of the people in my education program were legitimately insane, and made me wonder how they got in when the school I went to was considered one of the toughest education programs to get into in the province. From what I saw though most of them didn't end up graduating due to failing out of placements in schools.

Not sure how different it is in the US, though.
