Animorphs

Also known as "let's write a sci-fi alien series about how war is hell and market it to 12-year olds"

Series feels like an awesome fever dream when I look back on it

On reflection, I think it's Ax > Marco = Rachel > Jake = Tobias > Cassie.

I really like each character and think they all bring something unique and important to the tab, but gotta go with Marco as my personal favorite with Ax as a close second

But this is the important part. The books wouldn't be nearly as good if any of them were missing.

Cassie was the only one I wasn't too keen on and even she was still fine most of the time. Loved this series when I was a kid

I assume you're talking about this?

That's Ax. He doesn't "turn into a blue centurion," though. That's his normal form. He's an alien.

Tobias, Marco, and Ax were my favorites.

Love the series, not many series for kids turn into "commit war crimes for more time on the clock" by the end.

Also shoutout to The Ellimist for being a random gamer alien who bumblefucks his way into godhood, and uses his old gamertag as his name as a god.

Rachel was always my favorite. And the fact that she was never supposed to be part of the group and was the Ellimist's wildcard always seemed cool to me. And she gets to hear the Ellimist's story as she's dying which was pretty sad to me.

But yeah that series was awesome. One of the first book series that I really got into. I remember exactly where I was when I finished it too. Surprisingly dark too for a children's book. I mean you have...The group tricking a sociopathic teammate into trapping himself in a mouse morph was pretty crazy. And when the war gets into full swing at the end the group recruits a bunch of crippled children to be new Animorphs and help them fight only for them all to get slaughtered in the big final fight.

And really that's just some of the stuff that immediately comes to mine. Man...I kind of want to reread this series. Could probably knock out a book a day honestly given how short they are.

I don't remember a single thing about Cassie other than that she was Jake's girlfriend. Tobias is the easy choice.

Honestly if you look at just the plot beats of Animorphs, it's surprisingly dark for any level of reading, not just a children's book series. It doesn't come across as being excessively dark when reading through because the narrative is lightened by stuff like Ax's cinnabon obsession, but when it comes down to it are there any (non-sexual) war crimes that Animorphs doesn't touch upon?

I guess I don't remember much about the main series anymore, but I always loved the Andalite Chronicles and the Hork-Bajir Chronicles. Animorphs had cool ass aliens

Been watching some Animorphs retrospectives when it's dead at work lately. Love going back to Animorphs.

Also, huge crush on Brooke Nevin, who played Rachel in the TV show, back in the day. I miss those Canadian shows.

I read a couple of these and really liked them. I remember The Andalite Chronicles was pretty good (about aliens that possess humans' bodies), looking back I think that probably influenced my tastes in horror quite a bit

Definitely my favorite mass serial fiction as a kid. My parents would plop me in the book section while they went grocery shopping or whatever, and animorphs were way better than goosebumps. I never got into writing fan fiction, but that and harry potter were the two that made me consider it

Iirc tobias had the most compelling storyline but they were all solid caricatures.

i read books 1-15 or so, some of the chronicles, and then the final few books.

I don't remember which characters i liked the best. Even the more normal ones were important and believable. Iirc cassie was the actual animal expert, and i had some empathy for boring leader Jake- not everyone gets to be the fun one

Biggest trip was when the publisher held a contest, and the winner got to be inserted as a new animorph. Then, the author turned that character into a villain and for all intents and purposes killed them off.

I still think about "happy meals with extra happy" every once in a while
