Am I supposed to have thoughts about them? It doesnt bother me if that is what you mean

If someone identifies a certain way and wants to be called something a little different then what Im used to saying, it isnt really much of an inconvenience for me to refer to them that way

When you get used to saying they/them, I've found it often works better for different situations where you don't know someone's gender anyhow.

im not a crybaby or an asshole so i dont care and will use whatever people want. i used they/them for a while when i wasnt sure about gender stuff.

it's really weird to me when people get mad about having to learn neopronouns. like have they never had to learn a foreign language before? it's so much easier than that. i guess not everyone can be as brilliant as me

You're thoughts on people who uses 'They/Them' as pronouns?

What about our thoughts on people who use "you're" as a pronoun instead of a contraction? >_>

They/them is a good indefinite pronoun when you're unsure and don't want to misgender. Asking to be ID'd as they/them seems a little silly, but if you're acknowledging somebody as non-binary I guess you'd have to either pluralize or go indefinite at which point they is practical. However, maybe they just need a new pronoun (like ney/non?) at that point.

SomeUsername529 posted...

From a practical standpoint, it wouldn't really see much use irl in the way you describe since you're not going to address somebody by a third-person pronoun, you're going to be using a second-person pronoun so it's whatever they want to use in lieu of "you"

It will almost never come up. The whole thing is very silly to get upset about. I'll call you however you appear.

First of all, if I was in contact with 20+ people every day who all used some different pronoun, I'd never keep them straight and I would just give up on trying. If that makes me an asshole, I can live with that. I can't remember 20 people's names half the time much less whatever pronoun they expect others to use. There is no discernable way to tell a pronoun other than memorizing someone's preference, which could then change a year later. Too much work and not worth the effort.

Doesn't bother me but I dont get it.

I can understand the satisfaction that comes with identifying with he or she but not they. Maybe its a feeling of freedom from being shackled to traditional gender roles but I dont really know.

It also makes me wonder what the point of he and she are. Is it just a quicker way to identify how Ill likely feel about the person sexually/romantically? Situations where sex is important like medicine are going to require more than the pronoun anyway.

I also dont like it being a plural referring to a single person, I wish there was just a gender neutral pronoun that rolled of the tongue.

there's more to gender than A or B but we often force stereotypes unconsciously through language

changing the language can help change the perception on both smaller and larger scales, kind of like how getting your uncle to stop saying the n word is a decent first step in trying to make him less racist even if he's not a cross-burning racist

I've never particularly liked "they" as a gender-neutral singular pronoun even before encountering people who prefer it as a means of being identified, due to the quantitative ambiguity it introduces, but until English gets its act together and comes up with a better one that people don't ruin by attaching dehumanizing connotations to it ("it"), it's the best we've got. I see no reason not to respect people who prefer it.

Lokarin posted...

Doesn't really solve the issue of third-person pronouns. Second-person ones are fine: "you" is already gender-neutral, and while it's also quantitatively ambiguous, context usually indicates when it's supposed to be plural ("thou" used to be the singular version, but fell out of use because it wasn't really necessary), and when it doesn't, it's very easy to append something like "all" or a gesture to remove any confusion.
