I consider myself an above average writer and attribute a large reason of that to playing RPGs throughout my childhood. I never liked to read books but an RPG is essentially a visual novel.

An RPG is not usually a visual novel

I don't think he means "visual novel" in the video-game-genre sense. I think he means it as the other version of those words. Visual meaning something which can be seen. And novel referencing a well told story, normally consumed in book form.

Video games have definitely helped me write, they taught me to how to think more critically about what I experience and to analyze every facet of what makes up a particular work, from game design, to music, to the story, etc.

I think they conditioned me to type and read faster. They didn't impact the quality of my reading and writing though.

Reading speed and comprehension/vocabulary sure, couldn't hurt. But realize I grew up on the NES and SNES mostly and the quality of the writing there wasn't amazing or anything. I guess you could call PSX/early PS2 part of my later childhood and it ramped up a little there but...

But I also won a ton of spelling bees up through the state level through my HS years so that was probably more significant

Writing? No not really. Reading? A little bit.

I can attribute my typing speed and skill to early 2000's PC gaming though.

Even with most RPGs coming from Japan and often having translation issues, they vastly helped me with my grammar, too.

I'd say computer games and maybe computer use in general helped me learn to read faster. When I was very young they said I had a reading level at least a few grades higher than the one I was in.

My brother learned how to read from video games. I had to read the text from old NES games to him and since he played them so much he learned how to read. (I learned to read when I was two. Freaked my family out)

Probably not RPGs in my case. My first RPG was Breath of Fire 2, which has a terrible translation. I was already almost a teen at that point, anyway.

That said, playing Wheel of Fortune on the NES at age 5-6 probably didn't hurt, as well as some other game show based games later on like Hollywood Squares and Jeopardy.

Not so much reading, but I feel like they're a significant influence/inspiration on my creative writing and the way I view characters and plots in general. Like if I'm coming up with a group of characters it's often shaped by RPG party tropes.

Helped me learn English for sure.

I remember a teacher at an English course I took didn't know what an omen was. I learned it from AoE 2.

Yeah, as a non-native speaker video games and the internet in general put me way ahead of my classmates in elementary and high school when it came to English.

No, but playing RuneScape all these years has made me type faster. I mean, it's not the proper way to type, but I can get out a long message in seconds, and that's all I really care about.

I was really eager to learn to read as a young child so that I could read video game manuals by myself. That probably helped.

The actual games...probably didn't hurt but I don't think were a major factor.
