real talk though I was always a big Alex Smith fan. Thought he was always underrated. Sure, you're not going to win a superbowl with him unless the rest of the team is stacked, but he had a very solid career and put together some nice seasons. He maybe would have won that superbowl in 2012, who knows

Smith and the fact that the Chiefs drafted a ton of Georgia players the past 15 years firmly cemented them as my second favorite team long before Mahomes.

I mean if you're talking about in the long term sure since Kaepernick's been out of the league for five years now

but they probably don't make that Super Bowl with Alex Smith and probably don't make any others so it's basically a push

and it's probably better for the future of the NFL in the long term that he ended up in Kansas City too

I mean they were in OT of the conference Championship the year before with Smith! And they were like 11-1 before he got injured in 2012 iirc

I just think that 49ers team was built on running and defense and Smith was the perfect "do just enough" guy. When they went to Kaep he wanted the spotlight (and big contract) which pretty much destroyed their identity. Not to mention that like a year after signing a big contract, Kaep couldn't keep the starting job over Blaine Gabbert

He was a good QB but he had a pretty clear ceiling. Kaep's ceiling was higher, even if that window was only open for a few years.

Yes but the Chiefs were already a pass heavy team by 2017, so going with someone like Mahomes made sense. Alex Smith had his only 4000 yard season in his last year in KC, and if you're throwing the ball that much you probably want someone better. But the 49ers were more of a defensive team and leaned on their running game. And of course Mahomes is a generational talent and Kaep wasn't

People forget because even before he got snubbed by the league he was bad for two to three years, but in that opening stretch his was absolutely dominant in a way that just doesn't make sense if you only saw his later games. I remember thinking the 49ers were going to win like 2-3 championships off of him.

Honestly the Lions best option is to trade down. Possibly with the Football Team. They need more draft picks than they have, and trading down in the first is probably their best option.
