Realistically, if there were less guns in the U.S. there would be less gun violence. Just look at statistics for amount of guns in U.S. compared to other developed countries vs. rates of gun violence in the U.S. to other countries. The correlation is both unsurprising and clear: with a higher concentration of guns comes more gun violence.

But America has an extreme fetishization of guns. So, also realistically, I do not think a buy back program would ever be successful to the level it would need to be, and I think forcing people to give up their already owned guns obviously comes with an even deeper set of issues. I think mass violence would erupt in this country before most people would willingly give up their guns.

That means we need to look towards other solutions to solve this crisis, because as we've seen the gun debate will go on for decades with no change. I think for starters, in a country so saturated with guns, gun safety and etiquette classes should be a mandatory part of U.S. curriculum. This includes defense training on best ways to hide, cover, safely disarm (if possible in rare circumstances idk), etc. Maybe also refocus P.E. on strength training and practical martial arts like krav maga, so youth are both healthier and have more practical defense techniques at their disposal. Kids interested in sports can do it extracurricularly, like with other clubs.

Obviously another crucial thing to work on is mental health support and a reassessment at how we are treating and medicating youth. There's been obvious correlation with particular medications and mass gun violence episodes. Mental health support can also help to combat the radical views that most of the perpetrators end up fostering. Meditation, mindfulness, critical thinking, self-awareness, self-reflection, etc. should all also be taught starting as early as possible.

The only problem I see with my plan is that that the government probably doesn't want to create a society of educated warrior monks who would obviously overthrow it. But I think these solutions might be easier to achieve than gun control on the level it would need to be at.

America has an issue with glorifying violence, too.

I honestly think the main source of the issue is the horrendous public school system in the US. These schools are absolute trash throughout the entire country and are part of the reason there's a mental health crisis among young people. I will not send my child to one of these garbage schools. Alternatives are available to parents who give a shit

Guys the reasons that so many people are suffering from gunshot wounds is actually everything except the fact that there are way too many guns and it is too easy for anyone to get them.

Surprising I know, but I can find articles on the internet that agree with me so that makes it a fact despite basic logic and common sense suggesting otherwise.

Thank the GOP for constantly slashing and underfunding education for decades upon decades and Dems for not being strong enough to stop it.

I'm not saying that easy access to guns isn't an issue. Obviously it is. But access to a gun isn't the reason some kids want to commit mass shootings. Surely, you can see that. I could have access to 300 guns right now. That wouldnt make me want to kill people. But yes, if we could make access to guns more difficult it would certainly decrease gun violence. It would actually probably be more helpful in preventing spur of the moment shootings involving angry people that happen to have guns on them when they're angry

Yeah but you seemed to be implying that I was saying that it has nothing to do with ease of access to guns simply because I was commenting on the american school system being a cesspool
