So do you have the felt bottomed skies that you climb up with?

The felt is a separate removable piece but yes

Those are only good for climbing "normal" slopes, though, so we use ice axes and crampons (boot spikes) when it gets steeper

Ahhh, well yes... You know what I meant.
But you do hike up for that?!!?

That's pretty awesome. That is a hell of a workout by the end of the day.

When you're used to it it's not as crazy as it seems. The gear is very lightweight and traveling over the snow with the right equipment is smooth and fast

It's the mountain person's equivalent of doing a half marathon or something. Crazy for non runners, easy for experienced runners

Ya, I am not into the marathon thing.
Personally, I give away The Mountain come Hunting Season....which extends to skiing season.
If nothing else, it represents a whole new experience that I never wanted to tackle.

I pick it back up when we are back into hiking/canoeing season.

Ya, I am one of those people who can see people at precarious points and begin to freak out.

This is Chimney mountain, I saw some people low key trying to scale it and that was enough for me....I have been on the side of it as well.

It's actually a mountain that basically broke off for no apparent reason..that type of...I'll say erosion is exactly normal around here.

I actually have a cool rock from that mountain that I basically let the mountain bring me to.
((It was one of those...Ummm colorful hike....let's just say there were two types of trails that day.))

I like the bug pics.

I want to get into rock climbing, at least the gym version. I've climbing trees and just about anything else growing up. Well into my teen years.

But I don't have the body for it. I was a runner and basketball player. Gained weight in my 20s and I am full dad bod with a gut in my 30s. The fact I can even haul myself up mountains still is more a function of determination and not fitness.

i've never used bug spray as an adult. i often tell people 'i'm looking for bugs, i don't wanna repel them,' but it's mostly some hippie-dippie anti-chemical thing. i don't want that shit on my skin - it gets enough abuse!

i'm a weirdo anyway. i won't swat a mosquito - i'll blow it away XD

but a couple weeks ago at a park with my nephew... literally the only time in over a decade that i was wishing for some kind of insect repellent. damn flies.
guess i'll mix some essential oils or something as an emergency bug balm

on a different note, i've been going to parks almost exclusively in the mornings as they always tend to be crowded in the afternoons/evenings. the other day i went to a park at 3pm and was amazed to see less than six vehicles in the rather spacious lot. i guess everyone went back to work or something?? yayyyyy

(however that park's entrance fee is now ten dollars, dangggg. i should have bought an annual pass for virginia state parks already - serves me right. i wonder how many people skip the fee entirely, as it works on the honor system... )

i've posted a pic of this section of boardwalk before, but it was before the vegetation grew in. this place is even better now!

i once again pulled my cheapskate move - park in the wetland preserve, walk into the adjacent state park and avoid the fee. bonus, i got to see a part of the state park i'd never seen before (the typical parking area is on the other side of the park)

everywhere i've lived has these spiders in abundance, though this one's web is particularly large (and was in a sunlight spotlight). leucauge venusta, a little silver & green gal. their web is a composite, consisting of an orb web (almost always at an angle) above a messy tangleweb. the spider in this pic is totally washed out, in the center of the orb web.

mica is everywhere down there, too. finding big chunks/sheets was rare, but trails and creeks and gravel would sparkle because of it :D

Ya, I am more of a rock and mineral nerd..hence the user name!
It soulds like there could be some cool stuff in there.
Here we have cool stuff, but it's been so much that...for instance, just a quart crystal is unheard of in The Adirondacks. Tons of Quarts but no real Crystals.

Having said that, just below the ADK range is where you find Herkimer Diamonds if you are familiar with those.

I took 9 hours of geology in college. 75 percent of my total hours in the hard sciences. They asked me to join the program but I am a liberal arts guy instead.

I am thinking of going to the Bull Run battlefield this weekend to do some of the woodsy unpaved trails.

I am sort just now looking trails over. I saw that one. Looks good. I am thinking of doing 5 miles or so, depending on heat.

Not to jinx it, but ticks don't seem to hit me too bad. Not sure why. I do typically hit the bush in airborne surplus pants which helps I think. But thanks for the reminder to check. Last thing I want is Lyme.

Sounds cool. I've seen like an old Model T not far from the trailhead once, and some sort of Continuous track deep in the woods on the same trail. I think it used be an old road but is now a Wilderness area, which around here is a legal designation.

In fact, within that Wilderness area is one of my all-time favorite camping sports, which the trail to is effectively a bushwhack. Somehow or another there are two rowboats at a pond that is at elivation. I have no clue how they got the up there. If someone dropped them from a helicopter I would not be surprised.

Niiice, I was at some jumpoff point once in Vermont.
People do a lot more of that sort of thing in Vermont than they do here.
Probably because the ridge and valley lines are bit more uniform there.

~Side note: But on the same hike I and my friend saw a plane refueling midflight, which is kind of a rare thing to see.

It's hard to tell, but that isn't an edge. It's a gradual downward slope (the edge is behind me). These guys throw the chute up, run really fast down the hill, and the wind takes them away.
