I'm starting with the Proud playthrough and it's really making me see how poorly designed a lot of these enemies are. Sooo many of them can just make themselves invulnerable to damage for a chunk of time.

Like what's the point? It just kills the flow of combat. A couple of bosses have been kind of a slog too. The first Maleficent fight immediately comes to mind as just unnecessarily long.

Aside from that though it always impresses me how well this game holds up. It's making pretty excited to go to KH2 as well.

I think I used Sephiroth for 99 if I didn't get to it doing everything else.

I think the Traverse Town hallway will probably be my go to when I get to that point.

I'm pretty sure a good chunk of my 99 came from the Traverse Town hotel hallway grinding for synthesis materials and the Defender/Wizard Relic, at least one of them.

It's honestly kind of incredible that KH1 is as good as it is considering it was Squeenix's first real crack at that sort of thing. There's still lots of jank/clunky stuff and KH2 totally blows it out of the water but I can't help but put respect on its name.

I mean, they're not the same, but Square had been making action RPGs for quite a few years before KH!

Meh, part of KH2's sleekness was the decision to basically not do any level design at all. Just hallways of enemies. Pretty easy to "improve" on when you just don't try!

Of course it really let them focus on the action which IS the improved part but I really liked the focus on exploration too.

For sure! Not to say ARPGs were new to them but KH is definitely a different beast and I'd say more prototypical of what the genre would become before long.

And yeah combat is definitely the name of the game with KH2, but that's always where I gravitate. Something between KH1 and 3's level design with 2's combat would be my perfect KH game.

I got the original as a Christmas present in 2005, which was a perfectly timed transition into the March 2006 release of KHII. I basically OD'd on the series during that year, falling in love with the world and 100%ing each game twice, IIRC. It also felt like I had somehow "cheated" since I was able to experience both games nearly back-to-back while other fans had to wait over three years for KHII (and three years felt like a much longer wait back then).

Whenever I reminisce about KHI/II, I always make the decision to leave them in my past. I have such fond memories of my younger days with them and worry that I simply wouldn't enjoy them these days.

Gravity on the rock brother. It immediately sends her down and allows you to continue wailing on her.

I used it a little bit, but i think I went in crazy underleveled. So that probably doesn't help.

Oh man, the KH1 platinum. The fact that you needed to do three playthroughs and so much grinding was a pain. A good chunk of my leveling was just done grinding materials for synthesis though.

PS4 allows the difficulty trophies to stack. I still had to do two though. There was no way I could beat the game in under 15 hours without changing equipment on Proud.

Oh, that makes it a lot easier. Did they also update Chain of Memories to have difficulty trophies stack?
