got through 2 games this week! both were short ones from the jrpg happiness bundle and neither of which were particularly good

chosen rpg was generic rpgmaker shlock. or tripe. perhaps gruel? only noteworthy thing about it is the ending which was an almost comical forced cliffhanger. got me to say pffft at least so thats something i guess. thankfully? chosen 2 was also part of the bundle so i can continue the thrilling adventures of whoever.

greyfox was slightly better. its also slightly not an rpg. and by slightly i mean not at all so i assume the jrpg part of the bundle title meant 'made in rpg maker' like some sort of bamboozle. its a narrative adventure i guess you call it? like to the moon. the idea of the story is neat but unfortunately the execution really isnt. heroine gets to live a day in the life of 4 different old people because magic and reasons. the stories arent necessarily bad but they dont really do much and theyre all really short. biggest dumb is the big moral choice presented at the end of each one which are all being old sucks in this way. would you like to murder this person? i feel like there was supposed to be some sort of lesson in here somewhere that i missed

weekend update

didnt really progress in RKS. made it to the 3rd wily stage but couldnt beat the boss and got tired of doing the level over and over again :/ . would definitely use save states here if they were available. will try again later but might end up dropping

decided to go through Chosen 2! i went in with very low expectations and was still disappointed. theres a lot of not good to say about the Chosens, but instead ill stick with some good. theyre not the worst rpgs ive ever played, and they were by a small team that actually managed to complete a Thing and get it on steam. so i give em a Not Worst Place. ding!

also turned on Stardust Vanguards and Slice, Dice, and Rice. both are local multiplayer games so i couldnt get the full experience but eh. stardust is a space battle arena thing and seems fun with other people. not a lot to it though. also a fan of the team names. rice is a bushido blade type fighter where you kill in 1 or 2 hits. jumps feel kinda floaty but otherwise seems fairly solid. has some issues though, as it froze on me twice. both times on the last fight in arcade mode :/

fite game of the week is Blade Arcus from Shining: Battle Arena. my only experience with any shining force is that bread anime from a few years ago. luckily some of those characters were in this! anyway i knew p much nothing about this going in. not seen any tournaments, wasnt on the super best friends/woolie vs, and never saw anyone talk about it (except for the original ps3 release and that was because it didnt have any online at all). and that might be because the game itself is kinda nothing. very few modes, move list seems small, only has characters from 2 games when its a series crossover. also movement speed feels on the slow side and the throw character is kinda augh. it kinda feels like a low effort fad follower? i know nitro+ blasterz and dengeki whatever came out around the same time so maybe they were trying to copy those? iunno.
apparently theres an updated version thats japanese ps4 only that has more modes and characters from a 3rd game so maybe its a lot better

Only played a little bit of it, but it's definitely harder than any of the NES games. The way they combine the Force Beams from Quick Man's stage with spikes on the floor is comical levels of twisted, but somehow, exactly the type of nonsense I wanted to see.

went through Bleed 2 on sunday. mostly the same as the first one but a lot easier. same of that is because i played the first one and Got Some Good but i definitely think theres less enemies, less bullets to dodge, less environmental hazards, and easier boss patterns. even went through hard mode while i was waiting for cards drops and found it easier than normal in the first one. but yeah mostly the same kinda gameplay still not really for me

2 fite games this week. first up is Clash of the Monsters. its f2p and indie and died while still needing some work. feels kinda janky, doesnt have much in it, every characters dash uses that naruto run, and no updates posted since 2017. its doing the terrordrome thing of having movie monsters fight but terrordrom at least has a lot of novelty which makes its playable despite the jank. this just has nothing. and since the terrordrome team is making a legit terrordrom with rollback this is just mystery tournament fodder

although actually it does have one thing - the invisible man. unlike other games which have temporary invisibility and sometimes a way of seeing where you are, this invisible man has fucking nothing. no model, no shadow, no way of seeing his attacks, no nothing except a projectile with a shitty hitbox. would make for a hilarious match or 2 in that mystery tournament at least

and lastly theres Chaos Code New Sign of Catastrophe. its an anime air dasher with some customization for the characters. you can pick either a run or a dash, and can pick 2 additional moves between 2 specials and 2 supers. that sounds really cool but might end up being like other customizings and theres clearly a best with maybe some matchup specific ones. the characters are all really good too imo. especially the throw character. no rollback of course so blah. there is a sequel which was canceled but i think has been uncanceled so theres not no hope

started up Giana Sisters. technically started back in 2013 and with the Power of the Cloud i continued the save! didnt play that much the first time so not a huge gain. ive made it to the final world and only have 6 stages left so i should finish it this week. not a bad game but im not really liking it that much.

also played some faerie solitaire. more than i was expecting actually! game is surprisingly fun. also simple. so kinda like normal solitaire in that respect i guess. the story mode has 40 stages with 9 hands per stage so thisll take a minute. also might go for the extra stuffs for the achievements cause hey i like this

did start up Sam and Max. only did 101. technically redid as i played back in '13. i also at least started 102 but i dont remember if i finished it. since i was gonna do that one i decided to just replay this one since i didnt remember anything about it. vaguely recalled a few things but a lot of it i had completely forgotten. tried to notice anything that mightve been changed for that remake or whatever but didnt really see anything? may go look for a list on those after im done with season 1. probably gonna try to beat one of these every weekend since theres a lot and i think theyre all kinda short

finished Giana Sisters. took 2 hours to beat final boss eugh. still not a big fan. maybe a me issue but i had some trouble telling what was affected by the world switch and what wasnt leading to some deaths and such. also found the dash kinda bad. hard to aim and dint control so well. got the rise of the owlverlord game but not gonna doit right away

2 fite games this week. both are <1$ and were bought as goofs

Verdict Guilty is modeled after SF2 with cops/criminals as your fighters. got a detective, terrorist, foreign agent, yakuza guy, female traffic cop with a pantyflash attack, etc. has 2 neat system mechanics - guns and handcuffs. each character has their own kinda gun and number of bullets and you reload after you run out. can combo off shots too! the handcuffs are throw properties. if the character has handcuffs it prevents the opponent from attacking for a bit. theres also a dizzy which i think reverses controls and maybe another one? you can also get a hit after a throw which leads to big damage. one char has throw into gun which did ~30% and another could go throw > cr p > special move which was 40ish. also has a very lenient shortcut for quarter circles which is just a diagonal. can lead to some accidental specials :/

other one is Veteran Combat. lemme start by saying i really like the aesthetic for this one. WW2 era, old timey film, goofy shit. good stuff. however, its at least one patch away from being presentable. no way to go fullscreen (at least in game), no controller support, no in game move lists, cant pause the game during a match (even in single player), and at least 2 specials (supers?) that freeze the characters. aside from those issues, the game feels fast and kinda stiff. it seems to take some inspiration from Mortal Kombat because it has a block button and a universal uppercut (which can combo into itself in the corner of course). it also has an extra button which is used for specials. so special inputs are shit like HK extra extra LK, extra forward forward extra, and block block extra LP. kinda awkward and no in game move lists as mentioned. throw is back or forward + HP and diagonals count as back :/ . theres 5 unlockable characters. need to beat arcade mode on hard to unlock the last character which felt fucking impossible. made it to round 3 and the AI was very aggressive, was probably input reading, didnt seem to have to do the inputs for specials, only have 3 continues, and it was one of the characters with the freeze. may attempt to get good at this to get that last character but that is for another time. anyway dont think i would recommend this one unless you really want a goof with friends

went through Storm of Spears from the jrpg happiness bundle. game was definitely a step up from Chosen but still not overly good. story was typical rebellion against an evil kingdom which always has some charm to it. i was actually kinda interested in this one up until a point and then i wasnt. also had at least one loose end which kinda annoys me :/ . characters were at least likable enough.
gameplay was just rpg maker so nothing of note. it did have a lot more sidequests than i was expecting but the game was easy enough that i didnt care to go for many of them. and the one i did want to was one of the only two that is missable due to a bug. one issue i had was that the maps were big but also empty so lots of running around getting lost

Her Story was really neat. for the unfamiliar your at a police database and search for clips to watch from 7 different interviews with a woman about a murder and piece the story together. honestly not much of a game but i liked it. feels kinda weird though in the sense that it feels like you could spoil yourself if that makes sense. like theres no structure to how you find the information so you could possibly just find like 'end game' info on your first search. but also the way its presented and the in universe lore makes it feel more like youre just finding out some history so it also has that you cant spoil real life kinda feel? a definite recommend from me if only because its p unique and can be got for 1$

Streets of Fury EX is also neat. this one started as a dumpy beat em up with some jank on xbla. and its still that but the EX version adds a VS mode making it another goof of a fite game. the beat em up part is still not very good but the vs weirdly works? at least in a fun goof sort of way. also has some real peoples as guest characters. ryan hart and kayane from the fgc, a couple of french youtubers that i dont know, and the nostalgia critic (i think he was in some kinda controversy? i dont keep up too much and i dont know if it was the kind of controversy that would make people not buy the game because hes in it). anyway since i bought this for the vs mode im going for all the character unlocks which im still working on. ill call this one done whenever i get the last one which is at max level. it shouldnt take too long but im not super motivated to do it

also decided to do Hiveswap Act 1 like a fool. dumped way too much money on the kickstarter for this like a fool. got act 1 on gog because i couldnt wait the extra hour when it came out like a fool. and then bought it on steam because i dont actually use gog and i wanted it all on the same thing. goddamn homestuck is one of the best but absolutely the worst things ive gotten myself into. anyway i didnt finish it when it came out but now i have. its actually kinda good but again: homestuck. not sure when ill get to act 2 but since there may or may not be any more acts im not in a big hurry

and last fite game is Blade Strangers. its a crossover featuring indie game chars. biggest one are shovel knight, isaac, gunvolt, and quote/curly. has others too including 2 OCs (do not steal). its a 4 button fighter with light/heavy, unique, and special. the unique is for antiair/overhead/knockback/sweep and special works like special does in smash bros. game is fun! i remember complaints about it being slow and matches taking forever during betas or soon after it released or something but i guess thats been fixed since matches went by fast. granted i was only against easy AI for achievements so maybe not. shame this came out in the Before Times with shitty netcode. wouldnt mind a sequel but definitely not expecting one

currently in Act 4 of PoE. liking some of the new npcs. lady dialla and petarus/vanja are great. also great is having a customizable hideout hell yeah. looking forward to what happens in the story since it doesnt have multiple difficulties anymore and its just one big story

also did a quick run through Portal. i played it years ago on the 360 so i didnt really have to go through it but hey its worth another playthrough. game is good what a surprise. i accidentally saw that it was released in 2007 and am reminded once again why time manipulation is one of the strongest Powers :/

made it to Act 7 in PoE. shits gone from bad to worse and i fear for the npcs. game is taking way longer than i thought it would but since im doing all quests and reading the text i guess it adds up

went through Dear Esther Landmark Edition. i got the original version years ago but didnt play it because i couldnt get a controller to work on it. i guess everyone who got the original got the upgraded for free at some point. the game itself is uh not great. from teh same mold as Gone Home but unlike GH the story here is flowery vague poetic nonsense that almost but not entirely makes no sense. nothing to really explore or find either. and you move too slow. so yeah not a big fan. theres one achievement left to get so ill probably grab it and be done with this

PoE Act 10 almost done aw yeah. should finish it up this week

got the last achievement in Dear Esther. it was the developers commentary one. kinda helped to hear what they were going for even though i dont agree/still dont like a lot of the stuff. didnt know it was the first walking simulator i have learned a thing

finished Giana Sisters. not much to say as its basically just another world for the base game. final boss was annoying like the base game one but not quite as bad.

played but didnt finish Sam, Max 203. got close to the end i think and the game crashed and i lost all progress. so i started over and when i got close to where i was i decided to make a save and in doing so caused the game to crash and lost all progress again. ive reinstalled and verified files so next time i try hopefully i can finish :/

finished up PoE. or at least got through the 10 acts. the epilogue seems to have a bit of story but since its mostly just the end game im calling it done. games good! so much stuff to do and so many build possibilities. the map system seems like a really great end game that i should maybe get into sometime. i do take an issue with the special stash tabs added to the microtransaction store (that currency one should be a default one imo) but eh. otherwise really good game highly recommend

weekly fite game is Battle Fantasia Revised Edition. its an older ArcSys game thats got an RPG theme going on. all the characters are like classes youd find in an RPG, health bar has HP amount, ex meter is your MP, and etc. game seems good but doesnt look to have much. i also dont really like any of the characters. throw character is kinda dumpy (and also has no dash in the traditional ArcSys fashion), catgirl is too bleh and rekka-y, and just not feeling the waifus or anyone really. it does have an unlockable final boss character which im going for. gotta get 100% on everyones story mode which includes losing every fight, going through 2 routes which sometimes have dumb requirements to do (hit a character with a specific move 5 times then finish the remaining characters with a super). ill call this game done when ive finished this. im about halfway done so maybe this week but probably next

this week is finally time to finish up the Blazeblues. gonna go through the story mode and probably try to unlock some colors and stuff. also gonna start Neverwinter Nights probably. and finish season 2 of Sam and Max

started up BB Central Fiction. played some single player stuff and got halfwayish into the story. game is good but yikes those Japanese voices are awful. also forgot jubei is dlc and didnt buy him. gonna have to do that next time theres a sale. will comment on the story whenever i finish it but so far its not great. almost feels like an excuse to add some more characters in instead of a natural continuation. that might change so well see! also i think im switching mains from best girl makoto to mai. not that ill be playing it much. maybe if they do go back and add rollback to it. anyway ill call it done when i finish the story although ill probably play more to get the monies to get all the colors

finished up Central Fiction story.

1. navigating the chapter select was needlessly annoying. have to scroll a bunch to get to the substories and then it dumps you at the top of the list after you get through one for no reason meaning more scrolling to get back to where you were
2. that story is long. i thought i was close to the end but actually had 10 hours left :/
3. not a fan of the battles in it either. i see no point in interrupting the story to have a battle against shitty ai especially its a match youre supposed to lose. GG fixes this at least
4. it might be a bit of a shock but that story was Anime As Fuck. its been years since i went through Chronophantasma and i only watched the anime for the other 2 so maybe it Always Has Been. anyway i really didnt like the first bit but after that i got kinda not bad until the final bit where it anime'd back into not so good. overall i dont think it was bad just kinda not very good and tropey. possibly forgettable but theres so many terms and nonsense that its kinda hard to remember any of it to begin with. was kinda fun glacing through the glossary after i finished and read a term i didnt have a clue on only to have no clue on the definition so had to look up the definition of the definition and still not know so had to look up that definition.

im also still going for the ingame moneys to unlock the colors and assorted other stuff so ill be playing more. mostly just plowing through the arcade mode. i played a little of the Abyss mode but im not sure ill play it that much. maybe in the future if i feel like hittting buttons on it. hopefully this is the one theyre considering adding rollback to. or theres a sequel!

also finished the last 2 fite games of the old batch. firstly is Injustice Gods Among Us. put some time into this on the 360 when it came out and was kinda big into it. still liked what i played but i was just went for some achievements. grundy is an awesome throw character and its a shame he didnt make it into IJ2. i was planning on playing more of this to unlock the costumes but this is the Ultimate Edition so all the costumes were unlocked by default

and last and definitely least is The Risers. this is a game alright. some kinda monstery gruesomey mess (read teh description on the store page to get a feel for the quality were dealing with here). the camera goes in angles that make it impossible to tell whats going on and im not sure what they were trying for there. it does manage to be kinda creepy in that low budget way so uh good for it. the schmovement though is out of this world. one characters forward dash jumps you across the screen. and by that i mean i was standing on one edge of the screen with the training dummy on the other and it jumped over the dummy's head and landed far enough away we basically side switched which side of the screen we were on. and he had a walljump so he could flip back to where he was incredibly fast. another character had basically a full screen dash. another had an almost full screen dash but it was also an attack. didnt mess with everyone because it doesnt have controller support and didnt want to mess with joy2key for this mess. anyway it can be got for 0.80$ and its good for some laughs. theres also a superbest friends play of it which is where i found out about it and is worth a watch imo

didnt play much new this week. still going through the CF arcade modes almost done with that. only 13 left and ive been going for 1-2 a day so maybe ill be done with it this week. wouldve been done already if there werent 3 routes for almost every character :/
also a thing i forgot to mention about this game is that it seems to be another one with a weird beginner level AI. not gonna pretend like im super good or even regular good but geez. the ai is dealing not insignificant damage, punishing approaches, interrupting attacks, is quite possibly input reading, and has hit me with 2 astral finishes. still plowing through it and these things dont seem to happen that often but they do happen more than im used to on very easy/beginner level stuff (which is not at all)

put a lot of time into terraria. havent progressed much because im playing with a friend so ive just been building/finding stuff. made an overly elaborate boss arena which might not even be needed. also made an herb farm! actual progresswise weve beat the 2nd boss and looked for the beehive but didnt find one. might should not have made a large world!

did play Sameth & Maximus 302. i think i can safely say this is easily the worst episode yet. story was somewhere between bad and nothing. no entertaining new characters, no wacky twists and turns, no pointless goofery (unless i missed some), no nothing. the overarching story also isnt doing anything for me. at least not yet. hopefully that changes.
gameplaywise it was also not great. it was divided into completely separate chapters wherein you had to play through one until you get to a point where you cant continue, switch to another one and do it until you cant continue or you find the way to progress the first one, repeat. basically a bunch of backtracking with a bunch of menu fumbling and loading to sit through. really hated that. also the 3dness was kinda bad. got stuck in an area for a few minutes because i couldnt find the fucking door augh. i used a guide for the majority of this one but i wasnt liking it anyway so whatever

and lastly (and also leastly) is Kings of Kung Fu. ya know how fite games have a bruce lee clone like a fei long? this game is basically that but for all sorts of martial art moviepeople. almost feels like itll get pulled at any minute but its been up for years so i guess its safe. anyway it kinda plays like a 2d tekken only much shittier. it feels kinda stiff and not smooth. its not unplayablely bad though. definitely mystery game tournament fodder but still kinda playable. well sort of. the game doesnt run very well and has long load times. matches take like 15-20 seconds to load, even rematches (another tekken similarity!). it also just kinda doesnt run. i went into arcade mode and the game was just fucking crawling. had to cut off all the full screen effects (apparently a bunch of stuff to make it look movieish) and turn the graphics to lowest for good measure. and it still couldnt handle one character for some reason. it might be some sort of windows 10 compatibility issue but i didnt bother to check. another delightful 1$ goof game and will have to get Shaolin vs Wu Tang by the same devs

other fite game news i finally finished all the CF arcade modes and unlocked the colors. probably not worth it but still better than that battle fantasia story mode nonsense i did augh

and weekly fite game is Kiai Resonance. its yet another 1 hit kill Bushido Blade thing. this makes 3! unlike the other 2 this one is stance based. normal stance which blocks, an overhead stance which can be charged to guard break, and a backstance for dodge/counter. hard to say how good it is by only playing ai so eh. it also has a rush mode which starts each round with both players running at each other. makes round fast and im a fan. biggest issue with the game is that theres not much to it. only 2 different samurai mans to play as, only 4 stages (1 of which in unlockable and 1 of which is somewhat unplayable), VS, and a challenge mode which is neat but mostly simple to get through. it also uses a font thats really hard to read. makes figuring out what to do in the challenges hard since the mission appears for like 3 seconds :/ . its another game thats around 1$ so it isnt too expensive but its probably the worst of the 3

only other new game this week is Sins of the Demon RPG. its from the JRPGHB so wasnt expecting too much and that is what it provided. story is some demon gets killed and curses the world so that people turn into demons when they exhibit one of the 7 deadly sins. you play as some guy and his talking cat traveling around and of course have to stop the curse. its mostly fine i guess. theres some dumb moments here and there but its serviceable enough. battle system is rpgmaker so nothing of note. i would say the game has some tales of inspiration as it has skits, cooking, and missable sidequests/skits with tiny windows of availability. missed 1 achievement that was see all skits :/
the biggest problem is that the game feels bloated. theres not much too it but it spreads what is there very thin. the distance between areas is bigger than it should be with constant backtracking, story bits go a little longer than necessary, 2 flashbacks that are both long and boring, and almost but not quite forced grinding. theres 3 basic enemies and after that the bosses turn into normal enemies but keep all their boss stats which makes fighting them needlessly hard and pointless. so to beat one boss its either grind everyone to lvl9 so everyone has a skill to replenish SP to spam skills or grind some money to afford SP restoring items. after that you get cooking recipes that raise stats so you grind up 1 in particular which sells for more than it costs to make to get money to afford ingredients to get stats. thankfully you really only need to dump 3 stacks of attack boosts on the MC to get through the rest of the game but that still takes a while and is mostly boring :/
anyway id rank it a bit lower than Storm of Spears. playable but theres no real reason to. only 4 more of these left but 2 are kinda long :/

and in Terraria i made some unnecessary things and tried to get the ice skates. no luck on those :( . only need those, a lava charm, and the obsidian skull for the terraspark boots. also looked into hardmode preparations and augh its gonna be a pain quarantining the world. thats probably my only gripe with the game though. oh well no game is perfect

and yeah no sam and max too busy watching evo. im either gonna do some of that this week or battleblock theater. might try to do both

so i said fuck it and went through the last 3 sam and maxen
303 was another not very good one. better than 302 but not by much. story continues to be bad and puzzles are eh. it did introduce Sal tho who is the first good new character this season (it also brought in another bad one unfortunately). it also had a new mechanic which was good - an interrogation system. it reminded me of phoenix wright but im sure its based on like la noir or something. too bad it was only used for the opening section and never again (except as a joke in 304)

304 was the best of the season imo. story finally did something even though what it did still wasnt very impressive. it also had a twist that actually got me! surprised this season managed to have one

305 was just ugh. 304 couldve been done as a fine enough ending without this. storywise it felt kinda unnecessary and the big reveal was predictable, disappointing, and sorta pointless. there was some stuff that also just kinda happened for some reason and none of it was good (specifically, Sal dying, Grandpa Stinky being brain swapped, Max being replaced with Past-Max somehow). it did manage to drop the title which was nice

so yeah season 3 was mostly bad overall. dont know if they got a brand new team to do it or what but geez. it kinda felt like the story wanted to be big and impressive but it came across and meager and kinda generic almost. new characters were p much all bad (except good ol Sal) and a lot of the returning one seemed different to me (i might be dumb and wrong and missed something on that though).
gameplay got fucked somehow. i guess they made it for controller first and had to do dumb shit to get mouse to work (you have to hold down a left click and move for some reason instead of just ya know point and clicking). the game was dark which made navigating some areas harder than they shouldve been and there was no option to increase the brightness
anyway seasons 1 and 2 were both good and i recommend them both

also started BattleBlock Theater. all i knew about this one was that it had a great narrator and the game is good. both of these things are correct! im not sure what i expected it to be but a puzzley actiony platformer wasnt it but im liking it. dealing with the enemies and how the weapons work is kinda fumbly and not great but i guess the idea is to avoid/sorta speedrun past and not use weapons much (will have to watch to some speedruns after im done. didnt watch the ones at GDQs to avoid spoilers). and yeah the narration is fuckin great.
ive only finished 4 of the 8 chapters as this isnt the kind of thing id want to play for hours at a time even though i do like it

and weekly fite game is Nitroplus Blasterz Heroines Infinite Duel. as the name implies this features heroines from various nitroplus series, almost all of which i know nothing about. of the 14 playable characters im only familiar with 4 of them and 3 of those arent even nitroplus characters. i also dont know any of the 20odd assist characters although ive at least heard of some of the series. anyway the game is a 5 buttoner ABCDE. ABC are your standard attacks, E is a sweep/guard break/knockback (not unlike Blade Strangers), and D is the schmovement button (short hopes, rolls, evades). you also get to use 2 assists which are timer/cooldown based. offline modes consist of an arcade mode, a short story mode, and nothing else. also no rollback. gameplay does seem solid though and it looks like a lot of neat stuff could be done with the assists so its not a bad game just unremarkable really. i guess if youre big into nitroplus you might get more enjoyment out of it.

Wanderlust Rebirth on the other hand is some mediocre stuff. its an actiony arcadey thing with rpg elements. i tried playing it years ago but it didnt have controller support at the time (of course the controller support now isnt the greatest). theres 4 classes with a male/female variant for each and 2 game modes story and The Crawl. story has 3 difficulties each with a different ending i assume are progressively gooder. its got 10 chapters and theyre pretty much just go through some rooms with enemies and kill a boss at the end. theres a few sidequests and secret bosses as well. the idea is to do various things to get awards (sidequests, a big combo, big damage, other stuff) and at the end of the chapter you get a rating up to 100 which determines how many Character Points you get which is what lets you level up. theres also drops and equipment and other rpg type things. the crawl is just a way to farm drops. puts you in a big area and throws waves of enemies at you.
i kinda wanted to like this one but its got some issues. they begin in the tutorial where the game tells you press left on the dpad to continue. that doesnt work of course and to progress you have to press the e key. had to google what the fuck and found multiple topics in the steam discussions of people getting stuck in the tutorial. not a good sign! it can only be controlled with the stick which i find doesnt work as well as the dpad for this kinda game. visually theres too much going on sometimes. the spritework is fine but theres a lot of things popping up which can block whats going on. like a critical hit had a big blue text thing popup which covered the enemy and me which of course makes dodging/moving/blocking kinda hard. most of that can be turned off thankfully but even then theres some issues. enemies can be hidden behind trees and doorways and your Ai party members which i dont think you can get rid of sometime swarm around you making it kinda hard to tell where the enemies are.
teh game also seems designed for multiplayer which isnt really a problem unless you dont have anyone to play with such as me. i managed to get to the last boss but it feels impossible to solo. im sure its not and im just bad but yeah. the only protip i could find was just 'go back through the previous chapters on higher difficulties to get more CP to level up' which isnt a thing i want to do. so dropped for now although i bought this ina 4 pack so i have 3 extra copies i should do something with

2 fite game this week
First up is Footsies Rollback Edition. its a nice simple fighter made by HiFight. 1 attack buttons, 2 attacks, 3 specials, and an emphasis on spacing and whiff punishing. you have to KO the opponent witha special and a special is performed by either hitting attack after an attack has landed or press and hold the attack button to do it raw. theres also whiff punish and hit confirm minigames which are a lot harder than i thought theyd be. online has rollback and some good lobbies. thats pretty much all it has but its good. only 4$ so definitely worth it imo

secondly is Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection. as it turns out i actually havent played any SamSho and im not even sure if ive seen one in action. fucking weird. anyway the collection has 7 games 1 2 3 4 5 5S and 5P and a museum mode and thats it. the games themselves only have arcade and versus. theres online versus also but i hear the netcode isnt so good. havent done anything except arcade though. and oh fucking boy that arcade mode. i complained a bit earlier about how arcsys very easy was harder than expected but this shit is ridiculous. the lowest difficulty here is the equivalent of other games Very Hard at best. took me over an hour to finish the arcade mode of 1 and that was only after i found out that theres a save game function thats basically a save state. 2s was about the same but fucking 3s man. i was saving after i got any sort of hit on the opponent because otherwise i was dead. i would say yeah arcade quarter munching but that would require people wanting to play the game which this kinda does not.
the games do seem good though but yeah not worth it for the single player experience. i am planning on playing more both for achievements like a fool and to see the rest of the games. ive only made it to 3 because its fucking brutal man. ill call this one done later

and that is all for now. i still have several point and clicks to replace sam and max with but i wasnt feeling like it this weekend. not sure what im playing this week either. another fite game and more samsho for sure but other than that ill decide on something later

started up Legend of Fae. its one of those match 3 of the same color gem kinda games. this one is more of an action game kinda? its divided into levels and each level has some battles. matching the gems gets you mana to cast spells to kill enemies. couple different kinds of enemies that do different things so theres some thinking involved. after each level you get an item thing that you level up with it. unfortunately theres not enough to fully level everything and resetting costs one of the items so its kinda shitty. only issue i have with it is you have to switch between the gem screen and the top screen where you move and target enemies. its annoying to do on its own and some enemies cast spells that sorta force you to switch to close the text window. not overly awful but like i said annoying. seems like the kinda thing that wouldve been good on the DS or maybe a phone. i looked around and saw theres like 50 levels and im on 27 i think so i might could finish this week

also went through Rusty Lake Hotel. it was one of those free games i got some ways back and its the point and click i was gonna do last week. its a short one and not too bad. the puzzles are mostly solvable except for the extra stuff needed to perfect everything and thats unnecessary except for achievements. storyways its kinda fucked up. maybe. its apparently a spinoff of some other series and takes place like waist deep in that one. maybe whatever the fuck happened here makes more sense with the rest of the series or maybe its all one big fucked up mess iunno

also started I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream as the weekly pointy clicky. i watched an LP of this some years ago because i wanted to play it but didnt have it. and then got it on steam and am playing it now. well sorta im mostly just going through it with a guide just to refresh myself on the story. gameplay is dated and kinda not great. hard to see some things too. still though its one of those games that i think people should play. also maybe read the short story. i should do that sometime. got through 2 of the 5 characters

weekly fite game is Mortal Kombat XL. got X when it came out on ps4 whenever that was and put some time into it. didnt care for it that much though. not sure why since i did like Injustice and MK9. story was mostly bad but it at least had some progression with the kids taking over. also not a fan of the fatalities. way too over the top for my taste tbqh
also kind of a shame that i missed out on getting MK9 pc. these dumm guest characters are great but fucking licenses man :/ . at least i got this one and ill be getting some others that might disappear

and i did decide to start up something new - Labyronia RPG. its another one of the good ol JRPGH bundle games. went with it because of the 4 of those i had left, 3 of them are Labyronia games so i thought it best to get one done to kinda split them up a bit. this one is...mostly competent. story is of course not so good and has some weird phrasing and typos from time to time. gameplay is of course rpgmaker so nothing of note there. the one sorta interesting thing it has is the Cue system which is how new skills are learned. basically you have to find odd/interesting/out of place things scattered throughout the world which inspires the character to create new skills. nothing overly impressive but is at least a something
it does have 2 major issues though. firstly the fucking maps. dungeons are fairly large labyrinths that have a ton of branching dead ends and are just generally obnoxious trying to get through. this is story related though so its kinda forgivable. however there are 3 gigantic endless looping areas that are fucking ridiculous. i think i spent like 2 hours in one of them and at least an hour in the other 2 just aimlessly wandering around trying to find anything. i think these were also story related but holy shit they are so bad it doenst matter. instead of being one big looping are theyre divided into smaller sections that loop so you can walk too high or too left and get off the section you need to be on and get looped to the opposite end of the area. fucking awful
secondly the pacing is/scaling is off. theres a total of 3 party members but 2 of them dont join until the 2nd to last dungeon even though you can find equipment and cues for them way before then (you can collect the cues either meaning backtracking yay). enemies dont give enough xp to keep your level up meaning grinding is needed. of course theres 2 spots that are explicitly designed for grinding so i guess thats fine? theres several progression items that are hidden that you dont know you need until you get to where theyre needed so thats more backtracking unless you happen to find them. since some of these are in the fucking looping areas if you dont know what to look for itd be a massive pain (i was using a guide because fuck). if the looping areas werent so bad this wouldnt that big of an issue but they are so it is
so yeah at least im done with it. apparently Labyronia is some kinda franchise because theres like 4 games and a remake of this one. i might have to get the last one for completions sake and if they removed/fixed loops they may at least be sufficiently decent

and weekly fite game is Fighting EX Layer made by Arika of Street Fighter EX fame. mostly just grabbed achievements which didnt require much actual playing so cant say too much on it. something about it feels off though but not sure what. im also not the biggest fan of the characters. its definitely not bad though especially for what 8$. they also went back and added rollback to it so thats worth something (i dont think its especially good rollback but its there). i like the idea of the GOUGI sytem although i havent followed the game enough to know if its good or bullshit or what. for the unfamiliar, the GOUGI system lets you pick a deck of powers that are activated by performing certain actions during a match. so things like dealing a certain amount of damage to increase your damage, avoid the opponenet for 6 seconds to gain an invisible dash, get knocked down 12 times to gain permanent super armor, etc nonsense. i should probably spend some actual time with it at some point

played some One Way Heroics. its a Roguelike (lite? Rogueish?) with some rpg to it. a big evil Darkness comes from the left of the screen and you have to run rightways to avoid it while killing monsters and leveling up and doing standard RPG things until you die, kill the Demon Lord, or other game enders. after each run you can store some items/equipment for the next attempt. has 8 classes (more in the expansion that i dont have) that are kinda standard rpg fare.
i think its a good one but its not for me. i was playing on the normal difficulty but not making any progress. in some roguers like Isaac theres not really any hard progression like levels so each attempt is its on thing. this however has the item storage and rpg stuff so it feels like i should be making some progress by finding gooder equipment or useful items or whatever but that wasnt really happening. i didnt seem to find that many enemies, when i did they didnt drop much, dungeons always had some strong monster that bopped me, and money doesnt carry over so i couldnt buy anything. very possibly i was doing it bad and wrong of course. i switched to the easy mode and got through it with little trouble so theres that. it wasnt the true ending and theres more to it but im not sure if ill go back to it

and since that was a game i didnt want to play in long sessions i started up another thing. Gladiator Trainer from out favorite jrpg bundle. not sure what the name of this genre is but its a raising/management kinda thing. mord of an estate wherein youre raising slaves to fight in the arena for money and fame and shit. its fun but not very deep. the estate management is pretty much just spend money on things and theres no downsides or considerations to make or anything. the fite slaves have classes and certain classes have an advantage over others but again its just buy them equipment and thats it. you dont control the battles so theres not much you can do toher than level and buy better stuff. theres a handful of other things but theyre minor and generally of no consequence.
i actually think this may be the best game in that bundle. granted that probably just comes from me not being familiar enough with the genre to fully feel its not goodness like i can for the others. really simple but i still enjoyed it. theres also a neat bug that trivializes the entire game though. battles are 1v1 so you have to pick who fites in it or select the Withdraw Option to end it. if you hit cancel instead of select it just drops all your dudes in the fight including Withdraw Option (who you get to control). the fights are a joke since its 2+v1 and you get a lot more money (fighters with high morale perform post victory theatrics and get monies) making everything very easy. anyway i still wouldnt recommend buying it. only 2 games left from this mess are Labyronia 2 and Labyronia prequel

for the weekly point and click i returned to monke with some Monkey Island. Scecret of Money Island is one of the few things i actually played and finished. apparently that was back in 2012 what fucking happened to time. i was debating whether to play through it again but decided against it since i already beat it and the story isnt connected enough for me to go back through like Sam and Max. i did start up Monkey Island 2 though! didnt play through it too much but it seems to be more of the first one. im trying to avoid using a guide but even with little i played i already had to look some things up since apparently i cant fucking see anything in these games :/ . theres a hint/show clickable items button features which i was avoiding using but if im gonna use a guide theres no reason not to use these so ill probably do that next time

and the last fite game of the week is none other than Blazeblue Cross Tag Battle because YOU CANT ESCAPE FROM CROSSING FATE. i was kinda following this one right up until the launch details were announced and i noped out. havent paid much attention to it so i didnt actually know htat much about it except little bits ive seen here and there across the internet. most of that was how bad and simple and dumm and character moveset ruining it was. having actually played it i can see why that would be said and agree with a little bit of it. its 4 buttons (or 5 if assist call counts as a button). A and B are primary attacks and are just auto combos. C is a tag team attack, sweep with down, and some ex specials. D is for defense stuff and an AD attack. partner call can do a lot of things that i cant keep track of. it also has an English dub thank goodness.
i went through story but didnt pay any attention to it since its a crossover game so i assumed the story would be shitnothing. and yeah the movesets do feel kinda off so i can see where the hate comes from but im not sure if its game ruining. maybe because i havent really played any of the games against other people that much so im not as affected by the changes. its also a crossover with a bunch of series that have totally different mechanics doing something unique seems like the best thing to do imo. so other than that and no rollback it seems p good. not sure if its the kinda thing i would spend a lot of time on but still worthwhile. ive been going through the character tutorials/combo trials since they give of a lot of ingame money to unlock things with. i have enough for all the colors which is all i really care about but i feel kinda compelled to go through all of them so im going to. ill call it done though since ive done what i wanted to

so i ended up getting FF14 thinking to start in november but it had 30 free days so im in now. as expected its taking time from the backlog but im still making time for it. although with melty coming out this week the backlog is probably going on hold for a bit

anyways i continued doing the CTB stuff. not done with it yet but im definitely gonna finish it before Melty

also began playing Science Girls. i played it for a bit a few years ago but dropped it for reasons. its an RPG published by Hanako Games who published Magical Diary and i think the team that made it worked on Magical Diary and as well. story is just aliens invade a school and the science club fights back with the power of science. mostly just kawaii silliness. the gameplay though is kinda eh. you have a party of 6 but only the 3 in the frontlines can act. you can switch at anytime though as well as do other standard rpg things. one thing im not a fan of is how the sp works. sp is required for all forms of attacks and spells so its an important resource but theres no quick and easy way to restore it. theres no shops and very few healing items that cant be replenished. you only regain 1 sp per turn and to get more you have to defend which gives you 1 more. if everyone defends you get another 1. so basically you cast a bunch of spells to kill all but one monster then defend for like 10 turns to get your sp back. its really annoying and sloggy. issue #2 is the skill points. you get 1 on level up and have 4 stats and some skills you can put it in. of course 2 of the stats dont have much info on how effective they are and some of the skills are trash so you can easily waste points. granted the game isnt too hard but the annoyance of the battle system makes wasted points feel worse than they should imo. im playing on hard mode which also isnt helping (why do i go for these fucking achievements) and theres not many resources for the game. overall id say its not bad but definitely not too good either. im at the last boss and my first 3 attempts didnt go so well. im not giving up yet but i might. its not impossible but it is bullshit :/

since theres no weekly fite game i just turned Skullgirls on and got some achievements. they added the 2nd encore ones so i had several to go for

and thats it for this week. no Monkey Island as i wasnt feeling great this weekend and wasnt up for it. current plans are to finish Science Girls, continue Monkey Island, do more 14, and play some Melty aw yeah

finished up Science Girls. went and gained a level on a few characters and tried the boss again and won. raised a skill from 1 to 2 and that made a lot of difference. the boss is still a pain though. took around an hour to kill :/ . playing the game on hard is probably more annoying than its worth so i dont recommend doing that

also finished up Cross Tag Battle. a few final thoughts
-english voices for the UNI cast are good. Hakumens voice is awful and is apparently awful in all BB games except CF.
-that character select screen is one of the worst ive seen. moving vertically scrolls between the different franchises in the game and horizontally the characters. and not all characters are visible at once. its really dumb and kinda ugly.
-in game money is super easy to come by. just doing what little i did was almost enough to unlock everything which makes me wonder what the point even was if its handed out that easily

and lastly is fite game of the week Melty Blood Type Lumina. liking it so far but it does have some questionable things imo. namely autocombos and the shield system. autocombos arent a problem themselves but they are more intrusive here imo. other games have something like press A 3 times to go into one but here you get locked into them by pressing any button more than youre supposed to in a chain. so things like AAAA, ABB, and ABCC are all autocombos. you have to be on point with your execution otherwise it autocombos which isnt necessarily bad but doesnt really feel too great imo. shields are an instant parry that gives you 1 of 3 followups -a launcher, a teleport behind the opponent, and a dash through to get you away. the first 2 options can be shielded by your opponent giving them the options which you can then try to shield. leads to some High Level Anime Shit which is fun to watch but not sure how fun it is to deal with. im nowhere near good enough to worry about it too much though but im not sure if i like it
the gameplay is good stuff otherwise. the rest of the game though is kinda underwhelming. the color customizing is a good idea but doesnt have that many options, single player stuff is the standard arcade/survival/time trial garbage, and online lobbies only have 1 match going at a time. of course its not a big budget game and is made by a small studio and is 10$ cheaper than usual so its not dealbreaker or anything. im hoping for an upgrade or update or whatever when the next part of the Tsukihime Remake comes out. assuming it actually does come out of course :/}

and thats all. mostly been on FF14 which is probably what ill mostly be doing for a while. Melty is also getting some time and will be getting more. Nick All Star Brawl is this week so ill probably be juggling that as well. i have 2 spookyish games that ill try to do this month but with these other 3 i may not
and on another note, KoF98 is getting rollback! it was looked at in post #12 maybe ill play it a bit when it does. also BBCF got a demo branch on steam which might could mean itll also get rollback but nothing announced yet. and Project L is getting a dev update late november. ive been getting occasional onsets of hype thinking about that game for some reason so this is welcome

Impressive, I've long given up on cleaning up the backlog, especially since a lot of them were free games or they were included in a bundle.

One of the few games I've played from this list was Bird Story and I agree with your sentiments, it wasn't anything special. The two main games are great though.
