Yeah margin plays are pretty insane. I never mess with them.

I'm new to margin trading (well, holding a balance after closing) but from what I see, it can be good if you're doing it for a few days at most. Maybe for something like Interactive Brokers where margin rates are like 1-2% it makes sense to actually hold.

For me though, I'm expecting RIOT to go up tomorrow and then drop, so I'm making a small bet on it. If I lose a few bucks, meh, I'm playing with winnings so far.

My serious investments are mostly in ETFs anyway. Might buy some more retail though. ACI has been my best non-meme stock and FIVE is also pretty good to me for returns.

I have $72k into RIOT for tomorrow. Its a gamble. I correctly called FUBO popping off, I was just one day early. I then correctly called RIOT going off Monday, I just didnt expect it to go off today, too. Three days a popping is rare but RIOT was underpriced, BitCoin popped off, and Coinbase comes out tomorrow. They are all related so I reckon it can go up in the AM. We will see.

I have $118. I'm happy with earning $5 on that. I'm considering setting up a trailing stop loss on it just in case because it looks so volatile.

I would definitely recommend a trailing stop. My platform doesnt let me do that but I will be setting a manual stop. This usually results in me missing out on gains, but Im fine with that so long as its not a loss.

So the risk of margin isn't the interest charged as much as that they get their money back at all costs

So if your portfolio goes down you MUST sell at a loss eventually and they get theirs back before you get yours.

The most extreme example, since a lot of places will let you use your entire portfolio value on margin, is for example a case where you use 10k on margin and have 10k of assets. So your portfolio becomes 20k value. But if your portfolio falls 50%, you are forced to sell and they get their money first, so your 10k value goes straight to them. Red sox posted a table once that illustrates this better.

Anyway this is only really a problem if you're using a lot of margin or your stuff goes down a lot. You can't disasterproof your portfolio but if you only use say 10% portfolio value margin the chances of it actually mattering are really really low unless you're investing in a super unsafe way.

Makes sense. Right now, since I am feeling bearish in the long term, I'm not planning to use margin too much for too long. I'd think that using up to 10-20% for a short term (no more than a week) holding isn't too bad as long as you have the funds to cover a margin call if the stock market were to crash unexpectedly. Even that amount is too big for me, I'd want to keep it under 5%.

Had a horrible week dealing with personal anxiety. Have barely been able to summon up enough caring to look at my stocks. Probably for the best though - that way avoids making bad decisions.

This is my philosophy when it came to gambling and that's one of my gambling lessons I've brought into stocks. Regardless of your feeling on stocks compared to casino games, risk (at different levels, over different lengths of time) is part of both. So I agree - if your anxiety is bad, it's best to avoid looking at your stocks and acting on them.

From one person with anxiety issues to another, I hope you feel better soon.

I've suffered from anxiety for the majority of my life, but what's happening at the moment is, basically, my best friend hasn't been speaking to me for a long time, and although I think things have gotten a little better recently, I came across something that triggered fears about how long it's going to take until he talks with me again/if things are ever going to get better.

Thanks. I've used casino gambling as a way of dealing with anxiety before, trying to suppress it by keeping myself in a state where I have money at risk in the very very short term so I have to think about that and can't think about anything else. It was a rather expensive way of dealing with things.

Man Im torn on Coinbase. Such a high price though I dont think this one can increase last minute like the other IPOs. Nonetheless, its a pure gamble short-term.

I think people that want to invest in RIOT are going to invest in COIN today. it's gonna be an odd day.

Sold Riot for a modest 3% gain. I gotta think about COIN.

I'm looking back and thinking that I should have believed in Bitcoin, especially back when I had some in 2011. But even more recently now.

Now, I'm not sure if it's gonna crash like it did a few years ago and I'm afraid of risking much money in it. I still don't have any money in Bitcoin, but I'm considering dropping $20 and seeing what happens. I still see it like a roulette wheel.

This is a DPO, not an IPO and thus even riskier.

Demand "appears" to be high enough that it might not be an issue, but we'll see.

I have a very high standard of friendship and as such have lost touch with more friends than I can count. By that same standard, the friends I do keep in touch with are unwaveringly loyal to me as I am to them. The standard is high on both ends but I do believe in cutting the cancer out your life.

To draw the stock parallel, I reckon you could say EVRI is my best friend, RIOT is some guy I just met and just invited me to his wedding, and FUBO invited me to his wedding but canceled it last second after I booked the flight.

I'm tempted to buy puts on RIOT thinking people are going to pull money out of it to buy COIN

I actually wimped out. I had a high risk short term verticle option on RIOT that I dumped for a $20 gain.

It might have been the right play to hold on, but messing with crypto is playing with fire. It already is irrational.

The reality is even for a 10% profit, the stock would now have to go to $380. Its just silly to get into this one.
