...and here is where I would put the links if I was allowed to link to the forbidden Board 8 archive site. Whatever, it's topic IDs 78471566 and 78521010 IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW

So what is the legality status of J-pop type songs that are used as opening themes (or whatever) for JRPG's, VN's, and the like which are not included on the game's soundtrack and exist separately as released singles? Or if some are allowed and some aren't then what is the metric used to determine that?

For the record I'm thinking of songs in the category of Tales of Vesperia - Ring a Bell. I'd always thought these weren't supposed to be allowed and am pretty sure I've been told as much with that specific song. But now I'm also seeing that Tales of the Abyss - Karma has been in the contest before, and thinking about it I believe Skyclad Observer might be in the same category also? I'm not sure how or if any of these songs differ from one another in terms of how they should be classified.

I believe the previous rule has been, "if it originated with the game, then it's fine." For Ring a Bell specifically, I feel like I actually went on an adventure one year tracking down the origin date and found it was released as a single like... a few days before Vesperia which made it more complicated but I may be mixing it up with another song.

As far as I remember though: If the song's first appearance was in, or simultaneous, with a game - even if it was also/later released as a single/on an album by the artist, it's fine. If it wasn't, then probably not. I suspect there may be some gray areas where the song was released as a single like right before the game (like within a week or two) where you might have room to argue. I think it would have failed the old rules but it might pass here.

i'm not completely knowledgeable on the status of some of those examples; but from my understanding they've always intended to be allowed. if you were told they weren't it was either a rule change between hosts (or them not realizing certain tracks had a status like that) or like...just simply something the host may have misunderstood you were asking about? some cases of stuff like this as recent as these past few contests were in anyways; and anything me/deo change will be relative to azu's standards rather than what came before him.

regardless, me and deo will be allowing those examples anyways

Kinda? It's one of those "originated in the game" examples I mentioned.

It's obviously an insert song in Steins;Gate. Steins;Gate was released 10/15/2009. But it was also released by a single by Ito Kanako on 10/28/2009. I'm also pretty sure it's been on a SciAdv-ish album she released (and how I purchased it digitally.)

Nevertheless, looks like Mycro cleared up the eligibility question.

This would make sense, though Karma shouldn't have been allowed by this rule either, but whatever. Maybe nobody knew when Karma was nominated or maybe this was just always a grey area where different people said different things or something. (Ring a Bell was 3-4 months before the game whereas Karma was like 3 weeks, which also might have mattered?)

In any case though yeah I guess none of this matters if all are being allowed now though.

Quick, I need to expend my burst of anticipation on something before the topic drops! Since this is the start of a new era in VGMC, let's have one last trip down memory lane of VGMC 14's nomination topic, shall we? We begin on the fateful evening of March 13, 2020...

10:15:21 PM azuarc opens the nominations topic with some useful references. Whatever happened to being on time for 10 PM?!
10:15:40 PM Rules post #1

10:17:00 PM Rules post #2
10:17:16 PM Rules post #3

10:18:48 PM Rules post #4. How many of these are there?!

Silence falls on the thread...but on computer monitors around the world, eager participants are frantically mashing their F5 keys! And then...!

10:19:22 PM azuarc gives the go-ahead for nominations to officially begin!

In just the first 10 minutes, 16 people jump in with their day 1 noms! Let's see how much of our eventual bracket came from those 10 minutes (retirees in bold):

10:19:22 PM azuarc: Silence in the Sunlight Filtering Through Trees, Heading Back to Town
10:19:37 PM KCF0107: Final Boss Theme
10:19:42 PM NFUN: Zeal Continent, The Filthy Mind (Theme of the Hive Mind), "IDOLA" The Strange Fruits, FLIGHTLESS, Looking Up at the Sky
10:19:43 PM TheArkOfTurus: Butterfly Girl (VS Narmaya), Eulogia, Ready to Shave, Wings of Terror Phase 2
10:19:43 PM Toxtricity: Burning Force Medley, Dungeon - Geofront 4, -(Isoleucine)-, Apostle's Maraud, Hinagiku
10:19:46 PM dowolf: Zeal Continent, Desert, Jena Anderson, Endeavour
10:19:50 PM UF8: :(
10:19:51 PM PIayer_0: Taliyah, the Stoneweaver, Frey's Philosophy, The world of spirit, Waterworks Area

10:20:38 PM loweffortmemes: ChRoNiClESeVeN
10:20:44 PM pyresword: EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting., Kaine ~ Salvation

10:22:31 PM cakophon: Moonlight Concert, Patronus anata no shugo, The Least 333sec, Credits
10:22:56 PM banshiryuu: Massive X, Thermosphere, Rude Buster

10:23:39 PM rwlh: Chant This Charm, Variations on a Ra Melody
10:23:57 PM GameBopAdv: Bitbop

10:26:12 PM Flamander: Cloak of Darkness, Metropolis ~ Kerwan, A Line In The Sand
10:27:18 PM Place: Konran shoujo Soflan-chan!!, Epic Epileptic Apocalypse

Other highlights after the first 10 minutes:
- Bluenugget64 accidentally nominates "Bramble Blast | Bramble Blast | https://youtu.be/G3rnyqI7dFc"
- Mac Arrowny forgets the + sign in their noms, but promptly fixes it in an edit. Nice save!
- PabloSmith and Zigzagoon make the same mistake of putting the YouTube part of their nominations on a separate line! Shame for breaking the script and making azuarc fix it manually!
"I always think about planning my nominations ahead of time, and then I never do." - -hotdogturtle--
"knowing exactly when this was happening, I still did not come prepared" - kaonashi1, 25 minutes later. No excuses, you had months to prepare for this! (newcomers are exempt, of course)

After the first 24 hours concluded, there were 47 first-day nominators with a total of 235 songs submitted...actually, it wasn't that high because not everyone used all 5 slots but I didn't want to count it out. We'll see tonight see how the numbers measure up this year!

Gonna float a hypothesis here...I think this year's bracket will be the most normie-friendly we've had in a long time. Like, say, VGMC5-ish.

That's not to say that I think anyone will be particularly normie with their tastes, but we anticipate getting a bunch of new people who haven't yet been indoctrinated into the Gustcom Collective, and who don't necessarily form a cohesive unit of their own tastes, either. Therefore, the least common denominator is classics and songs from widely-known franchises. Especially if not everyone wants to invest the massive time sink that is listening to all the nominations.

Thus, I think if Pokemon didn't manage a retiree last year, this would have 100% been the year. We might see something retire from another series with none, like Ace Attorney. I'm not going to go so far as to say we might see an 8- or 16-bit era track retire, because that might be too big a stretch. Plus, I think this will have a bigger effect on nominations than on what succeeds in the bracket. But I do anticipate we're going to get a lot of older songs and songs from major franchises.

Supra crowd, if anything, seem to like smooth jazz. I don't know if that tendency is strong enough to make much of an impact on nominations, though. We'll see Art's Dream, and I dunno what else.

I'm just saying, get a bunch of VGM crowds from different taste pools, and the well-known stuff is likely to rise a bit.

yeah i don't think i agree with that hypothesis; because the new singarpg people is a notable boost that'll lift the falcom b8 cult up distinctly. a lot of those guys already love other b8 favs like umineko or gust or whatever too.

supra from my experience is distant from my own personal taste but it's certainly /different/ music from what you'd get other places. obscure stuff shined in their contest; if anything i'd say maybe supra will bring an openness to variety of moods that often weren't allowed to shine prior? (people pointing out that jazzier and slower stuff does way better there than b8/etc, which is noticable)
