I remember getting a tball trophy and could not have given less of a shit about it. I was more excited for the pool party we had at the end of our season.

I think participation trophies were more for the parents that got butthurt that their kid didn't get a trophy. Probably the same parents that dumbed down advanced placement classes by calling the school and bitching until their average kid was placed in the "smart class"

I played sports all through my childhood and one thing I don't have any memories of is being in charge of buying and/or distributing trophies.

I think it was the parents complaining about paying $50 per kid. I'm sure it's 5 times that now compared to 1990.

I remember getting a "4th Place!" sticker as a child after finishing a race.
It was metallic green and I always wondered what this strange, green metal that comes after bronze was.

Turns out, it was solid mineral failure.

Participation trophies have always been , it just says good job doing something. No one thinks those are the same as 1st place.

I think it's funny that the same people I hear complaining about how my generation was spoiled by participation trophies wear vietnam veteran hats.

Plus they're overwhelmingly the people who buy lotto tickets; the most profound form of "I got rewarded for not even trying" of all time.

Exactly. It's like blaming Gen X for being raised by a television when their parents bought the TV and sat their kids down in front of it in the first place.

People like to say that millennials were coddled by their soft beds and participation trophies - but how did millennials get those trophies in the first place? Who campaigned for them, and which generation actually brought them into sports for their children? Because it wasn't a bunch of 5-12 year olds picketing little league offices demanding prizes for the act of showing up. The problem stems from up the chain.
