To those who were asking about the changes to the taxability of unemployment income for 2020 taxes:

If you already filed your 2020 taxes do NOT amend them to correct your income. We got an internal alert today saying they are planning to implement automatic systemic relief for this issue.

So if your taxes were filed correctly and the unemployment income was identified as such then (at some point) our system is going to reduce your adjusted gross income and taxable income by the appropriate amount and recalculate your tax and credits.

So additional refunds would be automatically deposited to people who had their first refunds received via direct deposit?

I prep taxes for some friends and family and have two people who are directly impacted by this.

If you've properly filed tax returns and qualify for stimulus payments, you should have received them all by now (especially if the IRS has your direct deposit information on file).

Do you know if you were claimed as a dependent on your parents' return? I believe that would have disqualified you from the 2020 stims, and although you would still qualify for the 2021 stim, it would have probably gone directly to your parents (this is the exact situation that happened with my grandma, who is claimed by my parents as an adult dependent).

You should have claimed the two 2020 stimulus payments on your 2020 taxes.

I dont think you can claim them in 2021.

Are you sure? The way he worded it sounded like he was claiming all 3 together. But the recent stimulus would end up claimed in 2021 if that is the route you end up going to get it, though I'd expect the IRS would come up with a tool to receive it sooner..

I'd like to believe that but I feel like past precedent has shown the cognitive dissonance of too many voters somehow acts like this is not the case and like... separates things out line-item style and attributes them the way they'd prefer politically rather than the way it actually was.

idk though maybe this is too shameless and high-profile a bill/vote for it to work on

All previous marijuana convictions that would now no longer be criminal are also expunged. The legislature also beat Cuomo on how tax revenue from legalization would be distributed and 40% will go to communities where minorities have been disproportionately arrested on marijuana charges.

That's fair, it's hard to say how voters will end up believing. I just think the big takeaway from all this should be that voters don't actually care about bipartisanship as much as whether things feel bipartisan. A lot of Democrats seem to be expect that if they don't work with the GOP (which won't happen) then they'll end up facing a massive electoral backlash like in 2010, but that's not inevitable as long as they focus on less polarizing issues.

(OK, they'll still probably lose both houses of Congress in 2022 no matter what they do, but that's just because the system favors the GOP.)
