Presumably what happened was scouts discovered the nest while on patrol, realized there's food inside, and reported back to the rest of the workers. The workers then decided to go try and attack it, but probably got killed by hornets when they tried to go right into it from the roof. So they end up building the bridge to evade the hornets from below, and it apparently worked lol. Like, I'm not exaggerating.
