Probably depends on where he lives. The way I understood it was that the current/previous eviction moratorium only applied to federal housing

I remember hearing something about these "professional bad tenants" (they were good at abusing the system) who screwed with the wrong guy. He had enough of their antics and long story short, a frank discussion ended when he blew their heads off with a shotgun then turned himself in for murder. The end result was two dead scumbags and their murderer off the streets, so I guess it was a win?

What happened to the house? Did someone buy it? Do they live in it or rent it? If they rent it, the cycle may continue...

iirc, they screwed a ton of people before him, he didn't do due diligence and clearly should not have rented to them, and it dragged on for an eternity and he legit went to talk it over but because of how sketchy they were, he brought the gun for his own safety. but they were asswipes, he had an explosive temper, and then that's what happens. the universe balanced itself, I guess. everyone involved in the situation was a bad person who can no longer harm others.

I'd hate to be a landlord. It seems like it would be such a hassle.

Honestly, as far as price rates in a capitalist system, that's a pretty fair rate considering size and area. Are they not employed?

I may not be the biggest fan of landlords, but they aren't going anywhere until we also remove home ownership...so...

I don't think we need to remove home ownership. But instead, remove people owning more homes for the sole purpose of collecting rent and making a profit. I say it that way because I do understand people buying another house to help a family member out. But not if they are just renting it out to collect a profit.

Also, it should be more affordable to own a home. Many people only rent because it's too expensive to own... If it were more affordable, and people couldn't just buy houses to constantly rent, I think things would be at least a little better...

Yeah, I agree. There's a major housing shortage in a lot of markets and while I am generally cool with business ventures, that's not the case when it's objectively exploitative. The laws need to be written in a way that some billionaires can't just buy up all the houses. Be it gouging people because of a manufactured shortage or even buying them as an investment and letting them sit empty. I'm fine with anyone buying up patches of land outside city limits to sit on, but there are tons of vacant houses some overseas guys just lock down and never use and it messes up the market really badly.

Access to credit needs to be improved. The bank said my credit wasn't good enough to afford 1200 / month mortgage for a house, so I rent for 1700 / month.

if you remove people from owning homes for the sole purpose of collecting rent, what happens to apartment complexes? If you think about it, those are really just big ass homes, and are needed in higher population density areas. Even if you break up the apartments similar to how you can own a condo, who takes care of the overall lot?

I bring up apartment complexes, because many of them are run by big corporations who have multiple complexes as well.

The system needs a mulligan, really. A lot of systems do. From housing, to education, to the courts. Everything is still way too heavily influenced by 19th century ideas. Just because something used to work doesn't mean it should stay the same... I think the best defense for your point is UBI program successes. Obviously not everyone will be responsible with it, but more often than not they will be. It needs to stop being looked at as "giving handouts" but more "giving a helping hand", because it's a lot cheaper for the taxpayers when there are 1) more taxpayers and 2) less street people out committing crimes because they're stuck. Wages keeping up with inflation and healthcare being a human right would (ugh) trickle down into fixes for just about everything though.

A lot of landlords are penny wise and pound foolish. I know of a location that has literally sat empty for years because the owner wanted to increase the rent. The business said they couldn't afford that and so they were evicted. Now the moron that owns the land is paying taxes on it while collecting nothing, rather than just making a smaller profit all this time.

Which is ridiculous. I don't even understand how banks don't take in more information to understand stuff like that...

I think you should be able to buy the apartment complexes just like house cheap ones. And it happens in some cases already, apparently... As for the lot, you can do it a few different ways. One way is the charge everyone who lives on that lot to do it. Which means they all have to work together. You could even make it part of the ownership agreement. Another way is to sell the lots with a specific room. The only problem is that people who don't have to clean will be a problem. You could also give it to the city to clean. Like how the city cuts the grass around places of employment in my city. Just give them the job of keeping the lot clean. There are plenty of other ways, as well...

IronBornCorps posted...

I'd probably rather them be sold as houses. Or, run by someone who lives there, but who doesn't gouge customers just to become rich. They make enough so that they can pay the buildings rent, still live comfortably, and fix all issues in the building. Though, there are things tenants would need to do on their own. But that's just how I feel...

It depends on the market. In average ones, for sure. In places with 7-figures and up house prices... Not so much. I don't know many landlords, but the majority have been people renting out a basement suite or one extra house either to one or two sets of tenants and yeah, they're not rich.

I think there are too many problems for UBI to work properly. At least anytime soon. And it really depends on how much they make. You say that people would work. But when people were making more money to not work, they decided to just not work. Even @Muscles (IIRC) said people at his job weren't returning because they were making more money staying home. It just depends on what benefits they get from working, and if they think those are worth it... That being said, there's also the problem of job losses coming with automaton and other stuff like self-checkout and whatnot...
