Where the characters and continuity are different in each new title. But also is NOT a video game, or a Japanese series?

I was trying to explain the concept behind the Final Fantasy sequels to someone who wasn't familiar with them, and why you don't need to play the first 6 games in order to understand VII, and why there is a Final Fantasy X-2 AND and a Final Fantasy XI. I was trying to find something to compare it to that wasn't another JRPG, or something like Super Sentai (which I felt would be too obscure to be helpful) and was surprised by how much I struggled to think of anything. I guess using that kind of non-interconnected style for a franchise was not as common as I expected. I was wondering if anyone had any decent examples from other media.

It's called an anthology.

Just search anthology series on Google- there are countless numbers of them that predate final fantasy by like, decades

Black Adder was the first show to come to mind. Bit of a classic for today's world though.

Honestly, you could probably explain it like each game was an episode of an anthology series. If you watch any singular episode of The Outer Limits or Black Mirror, you don't need to have seen the others prior to understand it.

When I think "anthology series" I think of stuff like Twilight Zone, which was a bit more episodic than what I was thinking. I guess it works, but it wasn't on my mind.

Yeah a lot of anthologies eventually start making canon crossovers for funsies (including final fantasies seven and ten) but i think they still count

You know, I'm actually struggling to think of any franchises of anything besides Final Fantasy where each installment takes place in its own unique fictional universe. Even most video games don't work this way

True Detective? Has different casts anyway, I didn't watch past the first season so I don't know if there's continuity nods.

Also, something where the works are slightly more connected, but still narratively independent is very common in science fiction and fantasy books.

Discworld
Dragonriders of Pern
Shannara
Xanth
The Saga of Recluse

The books all take place in the same world, and have a recurring cast of supporting characters, but the specific setting and main cast are different for each book, and they can really be read in any order.

Tales kinda does this, too, although I think some of the games are supposed to be connected.

In true detective, season 3 makes some oblique references to news reports about season 1. I haven't seen season 2 so can't comment on that

But other than that they're completely separate

would law and order count?
actual question there since i don't know, i just figure they've gotta have some setting differences between original, SVU, and the multiple regional ones.

Fargo (the show and movie) are all technically the same continuity but are almost entirely unrelated season to season (kinda like American Horror Story but better)

No, same characters and crossovers. The new law and order series is literally starting its premiere as a crossover with SVU >.>
