I don't know whether "discovered" is the right word, but I don't know how else to put it.

Like take HIV/AIDS, for instance. That's a virus that came from illegally hunting monkeys for food in the 1980s, and then it spread to humans. COVID-19 is a virus that came from illegally hunting bats for food in the 2010s, and then it spread to humans.

Does that mean scary viruses like these have always existed somewhere throughout nature, but it won't cause diseases in humans until a very specific set of events sets it off? Because both examples were way after globalization began, so do these viruses always exist somewhere in nature but won't start killing people until certain conditions are met?

That would be a correct, though extremely simplified, way to put it.

(The "from hunting bats for food" thing isn't necesserially correct either, though it does ultimately link back to bats somehow. We don't know for sure what the "somehow" is yet.)

Also, I think what you might be trying to get at with how you're using "discovered", could be what's known as the "spillover event"?

I guess you want this so I'm giving it to you:

Scientists compared the different kinds of coronaviruses living in 36 bat species from the western Indian Ocean and nearby areas of Africa. They found that different groups of bats have their own unique strains of coronavirus, revealing that bats and coronaviruses have been evolving together for millions of years. Developing a better understanding of how coronaviruses evolved can help us create better public health programs for the future.

There are more viruses than stars in the universe.

Just think about that. Granted most aren't deadly, but there could be some out there that we haven't come into contact with that are more deadly and contagious than COVID.
