Seems like NVIDIA knows 10 GB isn't enough but doesn't want to openly admit it

Wait...there is a mobile version? Like a standalone card for a laptop or something?

Actually curious

I told you so.

https://www.pcmag.com/news/report-nvidia-cancels-rtx-3080-20gb-and-rtx-3070-16gb-graphics-cards
AMD caught nVIDIA off guard and nVIDIA had to cancel their original 3080 20GB plans and was going to launch 3080 Ti with 20 GiB.

https://www.thefpsreview.com/2021/01/13/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-reportedly-postponed-indefinitely/
now 3080 Ti with 20 GiB is on hold until they can get their supply issues straightened out.

Board partners aren't happy that alot of their packaging material $ went into the dumpster for nVIDIA SKU's that gets changed at the last minute.

RTX 3060 has 12 GiB of RAM while 3060Ti has 8 GiB of RAM.

Doesn't that seem a bit backwards to you?

This is nVIDIA's new RTX 30 series Mobile Product Stack.

Good luck figuring out which vendor is using which GPU model.

Alot of vendors are not listing TGP (Total Graphics Power) on their spec sheets so a certain 3070 model might be faster than certain 3080 models.

I love how AMD is shaking up the market by giving the complacent market leaders a kick in the ass. Nvidia didn't get absolutely annhilaited like Intel did, but AMD got some solid body shots in.

nVIDIA shot itself in the foot with how they created their mobile product stack, it's a utter mess of confusion.

id really like to try an AMD gpu but I just know they will still have driver issues and other software issues. They have never had that down pat like nvidia did.
also do amd have raytracing yet?

also I think my monitors only support gsync not freesync

Yeah I follow LTT/JTC/GN so i'm fairly familiar with that fuckup, but nvidia at least seem a bit more agile and can adjust more easily than intel can

That's not saying much considering Intel shot for the moon with 10nm and got burned so hard by a combination of their own incompetence/arrogance & AMD returning with Ryzen to Whoop Ass & Take names, that Icarus fell in the see and his dad went blind for a while.

AMD is aware of their driver reputation and have long since worked hard to fix it.

If you don't like your new Radeon GPU, just return it to your retailer.

Do you plan on buying a FreeSync compatible monitor?

i don't even understand the holdup with 10nm, they were working on it for so long, how did these other companies come out with smaller processes in the meantime seemingly, so easily. It just doesn't make sense to me

TSMC, with pressure from Apple wanted slow & steady yearly incremental improvements.

Intel wanted to jump the line and shoot for the moon and said to the public that it'll be easily accomplished.

This is what happens when management allows Over Promising and Under delivering.

And don't forget that the NoteBook vendors Cooling solution & Battery config will determine performance ON TOP of what the spec can allow for boosting.

So you won't know what kind of performance you're buying until you read reviews and see performance test #'s.

This is nVIDIA shooting themselves in the foot for no good reason by making a giant confusing mess out of their Mobile Product Stack.

I hate to be the contrarian here, but I honestly think the latest Radeon cards are overpriced relative to the features they lack.

Nvidia is clearly scoring an own goal. They should have completely dominated this GPU cycle.

Because other companies use offshore it to companies like TSMC. Honestly though, it's pretty fucking impressive how much performance Intel has been able to squeeze out of the 14nm chips.

It is frankly legitimately amazing that Intel even man just to stay within striking distance of AMD. Don't get me wrong, AMD wipes the floor with Intel, but not by nearly as much as it probably should.

Most people don't care or think RayTracing is worth it this gen.

Remember when 3DFX VooDoo was launched and 3D Rasterization was a brand new thing?

This is how early we are in the Real Time RT feature set.

It's going to be 20+ years before Real Time RT will be performant and common.

Anything else, is just a nice to have and not a big "Decision Maker" IMO.

They've known it wasn't enough before it was even released which is why they already had plans for the TI/Super/Whatever they want to call it. What they didn't know is the GPU shortage was going to push their plans to release said card way back

Depends on your work load and what type of computing you're trying to do.

3D Rendering, Compiling of code, Video Encoding.

AMD beats Intel 10 ways to Sunday.

Gaming, AMD only recently surpassed Intel.

Ray tracing absolutely is worth it, especially since dlss does such a good job of offsetting the performance differential. RTX absolutely transforms Cyberpunk 2077, and games like Control are so much better with it.

But for people who play online, they're going to turn off RT because of the FPS hit.

And plenty of folks play CP2077 & Control without it just fine.

You see how Spiderman: Miles Morales implemented RT on the PS5, that's the level of RT I expect this generation of consoles & games to use at most. Anything beyond that won't really matter since alot of games target Consoles first and are working on AMD hardware.

Only select games are nVIDIA RTX sponsered, so that's going to be a limited selection in the grand scheme of games.

So if you're that loyal to nVIDIA, go right on ahead and buy their cards.

The rest of us won't care and will just enjoy whatever cards we get, even if it's AMD.

From what I understand it was an attempt to keep prices down. The bill of materials cost for their cards is quite high since they tend to be a lot more inefficient in stretching a dollar vs amd which tends to be more economical in their cost/card by saving in the cooler design and whatnot.
