Some 90s-mid 00s top 40 song is playing over the sound system.

This customer comes in and goes to the lottery machine. My boss and another coworker were talking music, when customer says

"Last time I cam in here somebody was playing death metal and I couldn't stand it! I had to leave; I would have bought more. I like this better"

<Sk8ter boi by avril lavigne comes on>

"but... you can take things too far in the other direction.

However, I'm standing there racking my brain about who would have put on death metal. Now, I'm actually referencing what I know about the actual genre of death metal and not the all encompassing term people use to call things "death metal"

It might not have been me, but I feel like it had to be. So, i'm thinking, and the heaviest thing I can recall playing in store is "Flood" by Boris which isn't death metal and outside of a few parts, isn't all that hard.

But then later on it hit me...I may have discovered the customers source of frustration:

Dopesmoker by Sleep. That HAS to be it. Now, in store we can play whatever we want as long as it isn't too aggressive or obscene/swear words/whatever.

Dopesmoker gets some airplay in the store because of a few reasons:

  • It is one track at around 65 minutes, so I can put it on and forget about it.
  • Long droning riffs? people are a fan of this, for sure. It doesn't sound aggressive to me even if it is super heavy.
  • no swear words. And while this song is one long weed smokers anthem ("Drop out of life with bong in hand" "proceeds the weedian - nazareth") I figure nobody can actually understand what is being said or would put two and two together.

That's it. I think I uncovered this mystery. My issue with this customer is, if you don't like the music, ask us to turn it off. I find it weird you come in at a later date and mention it. Nothing is likely to change though.

Some days you just want to unleash a 60 minute weedian epic of music proportions on the unsuspecting public.

I'm amused that he considers Sk8er Boi too far >_>

That's an unreasonable expectation, especially given how some *other* businesses will react when you complain about the music. Why do you have to make things so complicated? ...oh wait, different Avril song.

If we get complaints about our music we will turn it off, because if we get too many my boss will take away our music privileges. Wanting the customer to grow a spine and use their words doesn't seem to complicate stuff, but I don't know.

Since she didn't lodge anything resembling a formal complaint, and it didn't happen while it was being played, this isn't going to change anything.

And I know a lot of people call heavy music death metal, it is what it is. This is about as far as I can tell she would have been referencing, out of stuff I have put on before, not even considering it could have been somebody else. but since I can't confirm this was it, i'm still gonna occasionally play it.

Most people are used to the fact that shopkeeps aren't terribly accommodating about stuff like that.

it wasnt death metal. People dont know what that actually is and use it as a catch-all. I had a girl in high school argue with me that Megadeth was Death Metal. She had never heard it. It had the word Deth in the name, therefor death metal.

That's like...2 fails in one really.

I know death metal is just sometimes used as a catch all term for anything that is like, harder than Metallica or something. I found that kinda funny.

Okay I checked this out briefly. Sounds not just slow, sludgy and droning, but a healthy mix of "outer space"

neat.

Monster Magnet is better than they got credit for. Also criminally left out of lists of bands from New Jersey.
