Just happened to me. Lost well over an hour worth of progress on a game because it didn't make it clear that it wasn't auto saving anymore at a certain part, and now I really don't have the patience or energy to repeat it all.

If I lost a whole save file, then maybe.

But losing only an hour? That's like getting a Game Over on an NES game. I'm used to that.

For me it's A Hat in Time. It's autosaved after every single hourglass and now it decided to not do that in the Alpine Skyline, so when I came back to the game expecting to just go do the end of it, I found the whole level untouched. Sorry, but I'm not redoing that anytime soon. If ever.

This happened to me with Lunar Dragon Song, but that game is so god damn awful that I hope everyone can understand it

I stopped and just GRINDED for like, 3 hours. The game is so frustrating to play with its Run button taking HP, you can't choose targets in battle, and dungeons only giving you XP or Loot.

I don't think I was done grinding but I decided to take one extra screen forward to see what was there and a story battle happened where your partner leaves and you get some other douchebag thats underleveled and I died.

Fuck that game

Oof yeah I had a GameCube memory card corrupt once, and separately accidentally erased my Melee save, but at least the latter I didn't entirely mind doing again.

I've heard of people intentionally deleting their Smash data because of how much they like unlocking everything again.

Some people even complain that there isn't a way to erase only unlocks, while keeping all your battle stats. lol.

Usually I just need a day or two away from the game if it's a modest amount of time lost.

But if we're talking lost or corrupted save files, then it's going to be a year or longer. I got a little lucky when my Wii corrupted my 1019 GameCube card because the games it didn't affect were Melee, F-Zero GX and Phantasy Star Online. Those three were on a different card. I was also basically done with everything that was on the 1019 except Tales of Symphonia, which I returned to about a year and a half later.

There have been times where I've been playing a Civilization game for a few hours and then get dragged into a long and bad war that, even if I win it, cripples my production so badly I have no chance of winning the game and just quit the whole thing.

On the other hand, when I first played Final Fantasy 9 I had my save erased halfway through Disc 2 three times in a row and I still kept returning to it...

Very recently I was playing an RPG where I was grinding for a rare drop and was like "I'll check this next area" and in the back of my head I was thinking how bad it would be if there was an automatic cutscene in that area that would force a boss fight but dismissed it as being completely unlikely since it was just an unassuming random area that I had been in before... and there was an automatic cutscene that forced a boss fight. I technically didn't lose any progress but I was so ticked off I stopped playing for two days.

Persona 3 ate my save file like 2/3 of the way through the game.
Disgaea DS ate my save file in post-game and refused to save from that point on.

Sometimes losing like an hour will be a kinda straw that breaks the camel's back scenario.

I feel like there's a difference between "lose a ton of progress" and lose your whole damn save and start over. I've certainly done the second one more than the first in recent times. I don't want to think about how many hours I've spent on Fallout 4 thanks to playing multiple saves on my old computer until the files gradually wouldn't play any more and I almost never finish games of Civilization that I start.

OTOH, when I think about redoing progress, I remember my PC edition of FF8 that was so unstable that I had to keep playing everything three times because I wouldn't stop and save at every one of the tiniest opportunities. I probably put 80+ hours into the game and only ever got to what I presume is a bit more than the halfway point.

Today, I have no tolerance for replaying shit. I died on a boss in a metroidvania I was playing a couple days ago, and I almost bailed on the game even though what I lost really only amounted to about 5 minutes because it was the one place where they didn't put a save room immediately before a boss. (It was nearby, but I found the boss first.) I'm gradually playing Horizon Zero Dawn right now, but it doesn't do any autosaving for you, so when you die, you go back to the last time you legit saved, and that's so weird to me in 2021 that I haven't quite adjusted to hitting every campfire that I encounter. Eventually I'm going to have an experience where I lose a huge chunk and I know it's going to kill my momentum.

My Suikoden V save got corrupted, but the reason I didn't start again was that I really liked it and so decided that I wanted to play the previous four games first.

Of course, that was well over a decade ago and I still haven't got round to V again yet... must finish Suikoden III at some point.

I distinctly remember it happening in Red Steel. I finished like an hour and a half long mission, then it took me back to the sort of central hub. I thought I was supposed to talk to the guy who gave me the mission to followup, but instead talking to him started the mission over again, with no way to go back.

It depends how much I'm enjoying a game. If it's good, I don't have a problem with replaying an hour or so, but if I'm already not into it, even half an hour of a loss is enough of an excuse for me to throw my hands up and say, "well, guess that's that".

I just remembered that I once bought a used copy of Dark Cloud 2 that had a disc error that would cause it to randomly freeze anywhere between 10 minutes to 2 hours of playtime. It was completely inconsistent when and where the freezes would occur, which meant you couldn't simply play around it, and that was NOT a game that always let you save as often as you'd hope.

I still powered through it though. I guess these things don't bother me if I really like the game.

It depends on the game, I guess. But generally an hour is no problem, I'll shrug and redo it.

In FF6 I lost like 2-3 hours of progress twice, but still went through it.

In Thief 2 my game had a glitch where I would have had to restart. I was half way through and just said screw it and never went back.

I quit my 100% replay of FFX-2 because the guide I was following neglected to mention a necessary Comm Sphere scene, so I missed getting the Episode Complete in Kilika. I could've gone back to an older save at the start of the previous chapter, but nahhhh.

But yes in general I hate losing progress and having to redo things in games. It can definitely make me put a game down, at least for a little while.

well, I think it probably fell into a vent so I couldn't get to it easily.

I've also remembered that one of my cousins erased my Castlevania CotM normal mode file that had everything except the Black Dog card (though at least my save files for the other 4 modes weren't affected), and another time a different cousin erased my 150 pokemon blue file to start a new game (I might still have the save file on one of those crappy third party save backup cards, but I doubt it).
