It was definitely not happening as soon as Biden won, but that article is not saying m4a won't happen, it is saying that progressives should stop fighting for m4a because Bernie losing the primary twice proves that m4a is not a good way to galvanize support and so people should focus on other things. I think that is a completely ridiculous argument for a number of reasons, and I also don't understand people who think you can't walk and chew gum at the same time. It reads pretty bad faith to me given Noah Berlatsky is also the guy who wrote an article saying he wished Bernie dropped out earlier than he did.

I know someone who lives in Missouri as a Democrat with a very far right roommate.

Most people are still completely ignoring Hawley because they're still laser focused on Trump. Almost every country on earth has some form of universal health coverage. There are many different methods, and its not always free-at-the-point-of-use for everyone, but almost every other country has figured out a way to stop huge portions of their population dying because they cant afford healthcare. America is a massive exception, yet it acts like its the norm. Bigger countries have done it, poorer countries have done it. The only reason there is no universal healthcare is a lack of political will.

The people satisfied with a two party system or the people who choose to vote by not voting? Its a testament to the shit of our system that more people dont vote than vote for either party.

Its easy to say they should start their own party, but, for example, during the short period of time LtM said he was voting 3rd party, people called him as bad as MAGA for it

It's just as much access as it is laziness and entitlement, not to mention our political system actively demoralizes people since their votes don't fully count under the electoral college.

Still, I'm not convinced nonvoters are the solution after the record high turnout we got last election. Dems still just need to give people shit to get people to support them.

If Republicans like Mike Pompeo think that multiculturalism is antithetical to American values, then compromise would likely exclude or disadvantage people of color. Biden pacifying the rights racial resentment could just end up reinforcing the belief that the country has achieved racial equality or even that weve gone too far, and white people are now the ones who are disadvantaged.

But changing these destabilizing trends is probably something that needs to start from the right. Thats because many of the beliefs and behaviors threatening American democracy started earlier and are more pronounced on that end of the political spectrum. Yes, both sides engage in dehumanization, delegitimization and conspiracy-mongering, but both sides have not gone about it in the same way, or at the same rate.

I'm unsure how you can think this after seeing the Georgia runoff. We're not getting many Republicans on our side any time soon (see above article) so attracting non-voters with popular policies and showing them that government can do things for them is imo one of the best things we can do.

Because while it was record turnout for a runoff, turnout still dropped compared to the general. It's just that Republican turnout dropped harder. And it's all very close. It really isn't as simple as "more turnout = easy dem votes."

Anyways I don't disagree that Dems need better outreach and I also said they need to attract people by actually enacting policy. I'm just saying, nonvoters as a broad group aren't going to save us because they're not all neutral undecideds. A lot of them would vote conservative, and that's my main takeaway from the huge turnout in 2020 and the Georgia runoffs. Dems need more specific strategies to come out ahead.

Local news here in Wisconsin continues to harp on the lack of vaccines sent to us and the need for more vaccines, the shortage really slowing down the process of getting people vaccinated. Meanwhile CNN front page is glowingly praising Biden for his aggressive plan to get people vaccinated. I just wonder, if Trump was still President, the headlines on CNN would instead be berating Trump for the delays in vaccine distribution.

The Trump admin did some good in aiding vaccine development with OWS, but did absolutely nothing to plan for distribution (something that anyone who thought about things for more than a minute would foresee as a huge logistical challenge that required planning)
