I mysteriously can't find my black Wii nunchuck that goes with my black Wiimote (that has the Motion Plus thing built in). It should be in the same drawer as all my other Wii stuff, wtf. Did I sleepwalk one night and throw it out?

Anyway, let's see how long this goes before I get bored.

You might want to wait. I hear a remake is probably coming soon for switch. Though, the Koloktos fight is probably better with motion controls. I feel it would be less fun with standard controls...

Though, I didnt mind the motion controls. I didnt have the same problems as others did...

I didn't mind the motion controls. I won't get a Zelda collection if they give it the same treatment they did with the disappointing Mario collection a few months ago. Skyward Sword's problems were the horrible pacing, straight-to-VHS Disney movie story, constant handholding, uninspired overworld, repetitive content, and low enemy variety.

I'm only replaying it because I've replayed every other Zelda at some point in the past year except Four Swords Adventures.

Okay, so I had a Hero Mode file from 2012 that I left as a blank to copy from (why the fuck didn't they make it an option to select Hero Mode without beating the game first, ffs). Even on Hero Mode, they STILL make you do tutorials with how to Z target and shit.

I don't think this playthrough is going to last long. God I'm glad Nintendo smartened up after this shit.

Something came over me to make watch the first Groose cutscene (honestly, he's one of the best parts of this game so meh). When Zelda appears and surprises them, the sound effect that plays is the exact same as the sound effect that plays in Breath of the Wild when you successfully cook something.

This is now the nerdiest game fact I know.

God there are SO many tutorials in this game. The gameplay stops every 20 seconds to give you a 3 minute tutorial or segment of useless dialogue.

Back to bitch some more.

The game STOPS gameplay every minute to explain something. Worse yet, it'll stop, pan the camera to show you something, pan back, have a NPC tell you something with about 3 times as many words as needed, and then have Fi come out and explain it to you again, and the go back to the NPC to react to that. This happens EVERY time.

I stopped playing last night when I got to the first dungeon.

So much of that game is just useless padding and annoying handholding that it's amazing (and sad) that it ever cleared quality control.

I straight up don't respect the opinion of anyone who thinks this anything above a bottom tier Zelda game. Fucking how.

I get angry thinking about it because Nintendo basically had to go out of their way to purposely fuck this up. And there's an air about the game of superiority, as if Nintendo shit out this game and then acted like it was a masterpiece. The first Fi cutscenes where some serious sounding orchestrated music plays just seems patronizing when the accompanying gameplay is stunted, the story is boring, and the graphics are early PS2 stage (Link looks like he's been drinking bleach or something, and wtf is going on with his haircut, he looks like the child of Justin Bieber and Jamie Lee Curtis).

This is the game that broke the Zelda cycle, where each new game makes people remember the previous one more fondly.

I don't know why you bothered to replay it, just from the tone of your posts it seems kinda like you went in looking for a bad time and expecting to pick out every single flaw you could.

I agree about padding and handholding but those are problems to various extents in all the 3D Zeldas before BotW. I think of Fi as being more of a pointless inconvenience than actually spoiling the game though, for the most part you still have to figure out and execute on puzzles. I'm not sure what counts as "padding" vs. legit gameplay either, these just seem to be arbitrary lines people draw to describe aspects they like or don't like. I guess it's kind of a "you know it when you see it" thing but if you were trying to objectively review it I don't think it's much of a helpful measure. That's another reason why BotW blows all these out of the water, almost everything in the game is as worthwhile as you want to make it.

There are some decent shakeups to the story and gameplay that I appreciated, it was a series that at the time was very retread heavy and TP might have been the worst offender. Not everything was so great but I don't understand this idea that it's some unmitigated disaster. The main issue I think is that some of the changes were okay for one game, but didn't feel like a logical leap forward for the series overall. Luckily BotW did a complete reboot of the series which is perhaps what SS should have been, but I'm glad that idea wasn't wasted on the fucking Wii.

The miniboss was alright, but the boss is genuinely great. That fight went for longer than I remembered, and I was constantly landing hits, too.

Also, the Skyview Spring afterwards gave me BotW nostalgia. I know it's inclusion in BotW was an intentional nod to Skyward Sword, but I can definitely see which game has my respect more based on how that location makes me feel.

I never explored Skyloft at night much before. I found all the villager's homes, and visiting them at night was kind of neat, I guess.

Honestly the game is more fun when you just wander and explore aimlessly because at least then Fi isn't telling you what to do every 30 seconds.

I played for about another hour tonight. I'm at the second dungeon. Right as I arrived, I realized my wallet was full, so I went and bought two wallet upgrades from Beedle and then opened a bunch of sky chests (fortunately in that order, I earned 400 rupees from those chests, which would have vanished if my wallet was full).

I played the bamboo slicing mini game, too. I thought you got a heart peace from it. I scored 33 slices on my first try and won a Goddess Plume. I then checked a Zelda wiki and learned that's literally as good of a prize as you get from it.

Again, the game is mostly fine as long as Fi stays out of the way. Some cutscenes/transitions are pretty tedious even without her, though.

Just finished the second dungeon. It was alright, nothing really special. The cutscene at the end is interesting, as it shows how immature and impatient Impa is.

The fact the game has held my attention this long is a decent sign. It's gotten better. The handholding continues to be the main problem, coupled with the delays in gameplay every time you pick up a collection item.

I played a bit more yesterday and today.

The desert area gimmick of time stones was cool. Everything else about it was boring. I couldn't get past the fact that the only reason you enter the third dungeon is because there is debris blocking the Temple of Time. You could just get a ladder, or even a rope, and that problem would have been solved.

The cutscene after the third dungeon is awesome. I remember it being one of the best in the game. It's so satisfying to be snarky to Impa by saying "am I late".

Everything after the third dungeon has felt like filler. The Imprisoned is a buzzkill, but the Groose cutscenes make up for it. Fetching the windmill piece just felt like busy work. I'm just at the point where you need to do a trial in the forest. I know I'm still a good way away from dungeon 4.

I don't mind the using motion controls. Actually I've always advocated for customizable controls in games - but my one exception to that rule is for games that use special controls as part of the experience. The only problem is when they're not implemented well. Skyward Sword's motion controls were fun to use, but they were pretty wonky.

I think of lot of that comes down to positioning. Your wii remote experience can vary wildly based on how far away the sensor bar is and how high it is relative to the space your arm is moving through. Personally I didn't have too many issues with skyward sword controls, though I do recall having to re-calibrate with obnoxious frequency.

The motion controls are actually my favourite part of this game, at least for using the sword. It doesn't always correctly register though, which can result in getting countered by an enemy. I never have to recalibrate the controls (other than the pointer, of course).

I just finished the fourth dungeon. The Silent Realm trial wasn't as bad as I had remembered. Not a fan of the underwater swimming controls, motion adds nothing to that. It looks like the swimming was adapted from Twilight Princess, which worked quite well with traditional controls.

Backtracking through an old dungeon was annoying but didn't take too long for me to care (I knew exactly where to go, though).

The fourth dungeon wasn't particularly interesting. I'll probably piss some people off by saying this, but the boss wasn't really that fun to me, either. I've always heard people say it's a top tier boss in the entire series. I'm not seeing how.

Upgrading to the Goddess Longsword feels so long overdue. Yet it's still a satisfying upgrade, so meh.

I think the next dungeon is in the sand sea. If so, I remember that being the best part of the whole game.

I have heard the theory that some of the Wii Motion Plus accessories that got bundled with the game (which was the only reason many people had a WMP) were defective, which seems like the most plausible explanation I can think of for how incredibly polarizing the controls were. Like, I'd get some people just not liking them, but there were many people who swore up and down that they made the game barely playable, which just doesn't line up with how many others found that they worked completely fine. People not recalibrating often enough is another potential issue (personally, I tapped the button to center the aiming cursor basically every time I aimed with something, to the point where it became second nature and I didn't even notice), but I still doubt that so many people would have such a bad time if it were that easily fixed. Given how few other games used WMP's (I think the only other one I own is Nintendoland, and that wasn't even on the Wii), it's also quite believable that nobody would ever have tested their WMP on another game to confirm whether or not it worked.

It really is. I genuinely felt that it had some of the best dungeon designs in the series, but the bland overworld and a host of other problems made it much less enjoyable overall than it could have been. I should really replay it and see how my impressions hold up a decade later.

But I mostly just found them to be fairly bland rather than annoying, except for the later imprisoned fights where it's difficult to even get close to it.

I've only fought the Imprisoned once so far, and I remember struggling to get close to it in the later fights.

In this first fight, I just used Skyward Strikes to hit the toes. Didn't take any damage at all. I wonder if that will make the later fights easier.
