I did play a little into Secret of Mana, but not very far as a kid. I recently picked up the Mana collection on Switch and played Secret of Mana, and I enjoyed it, but I think it might be a little overrated. Even now it seldom gets mentioned in "hidden gem" discussions since it's a game by a no-name developer list in a sea of third-party platformers, but its Ninja Gaiden-style combat/platforming & magic system really set it apart from the crowd; gameplay's unfortunately sorta wasted on bare-bones, linear levels but on the plus side its visual style's kinda neat & its OST has a unique South Asian vibe since its story is inspired by Hindu mythology. So it could be more beneficial to start with 2 even if 1 is the inferior game On the flipside - having only played 1.5 hours of the first one between the two - I feel like seeing what happens at the end of II & spending the rest of the game playing as ~~Maxim's descendant~~ builds up a sense of mystique for the events leading up to it.
