Definitely a letdown. A real shame after the greatness of 2016

that's a brave take

im still working through doom 2016 and whenever I say that I really like it, my brother (who just recently beat both games on Nightmare and is trying Ultra Nightmare) borderline wants to fight me for daring to suggest it's anywhere near as good as Doom Eternal

bro i just said i like the game

Overall better than 2016 by a decent but not juge margin. Still gotta play that DLC

I agree it was kind of a let down, but that's on me for expecting a sequel to be better than the masterpiece that is DOOM 2016

The platforming really isn't fun. The part with the four demon eyes and the fire/up and down platforms just isn't and wasn't fun at all. Combat is alot more interesting, difficulty scales fine. I like the take on weak spots too. Level design feels like a bit of a step back too, mostly in terms of being stuck in bottlenecks.

Maybe I suck, but I didn't find these problems in 2016.

The platforming is pretty great and the combat is significantly better than 2016. More tools, faster movement speed, you could slap a style meter on it and it'd basically be a FPS DMC game.

Gravy played it on PS4 so that explains why he wasn't blown away

D:E on consoles is the same game and yet vastly inferior because the control scheme locks you into bottom 25th percentile play at best even if you're an actual beast. It's hard to have fun with the game when its systems' depths can't be explored due to bad interface.

I haven't played it (yet!) but just in the discussions I've seen there doesn't seem to be a consensus at all. Seems like an almost 50/50 split between the "this is a first-person Devil May Cry and I love it" and "they completely ruined what made 2016 great" camps.

If you only play the multiplayer, then yes, Doom Eternal wasn't good.

Eternal blows out 2016 everywhere else and was the second best game of 2020 (behind Ori 2)

Probably Giant Bomb, I'd guess, where every staffer was disappointed in it.

The story's real bad in comparison too, compared to how hilariously delightful Doom 2016's story was. Laughed maniacally so many times in 2016, while Eternal only really had the Mars moment. And as we've already said, the controller support for it is balls.

I never understood why people liked Giant Bomb so thanks for reconfirming it

(I appreciate them for starting their style of journalism but everyone from Easy Allies to MinnMax does it better, and apparently with better taste)

Why wouldn't you care about it when it's one of the funniest, most over the top stories in a video game? People liked the story in Life Is Strange, and Doom 2016's story was way better than that.

Eternal's story is even funnier, dumber, and more over the top than 2016's while embracing Doom lore throughout the entire series so if that's your metric you should like that one more.

Way more droning backstory and serious tone in Eternal. Get rid of all that crap with the Doom Slayer talking and maybe we'd have something.

"All that crap with the Doom Slayer talking"

He talks in literally one scene, and he says a reference to the big dumb comics. It's literally the big guts line. It's maybe five lines total.

You don't get any better than that.

Why are we even talking about the story in either of these games

Doom Eternal's logs are actually pretty damn interesting but they're about the 116th reason I liked the game

it's less about story and more about immersive narrative, of which Doom 2016's is top tier. it supplements the environment and gameplay pretty perfectly.

i loved doom 2016, but i've held off on grabbing eternal based on some gameplay clips i've seen. 2016 captured lightning in a bottle and it'll be hard to nail the landing a second time

first: one of the greatest things about doom 2016 was symbolized in the opening cutscene- that the main character literally punched the plot dispenser and jumped right into gameplay. i've been made aware that eternal has a healthy dose of cutscene

two: there are a bazillion little icons/resources on the HUD indicating gameplay subsystems that probably aren't necessary

three: when you're hit it flashes weird icons, presumably depending on the type of damage (i guess if a dog attacks you it shows claws or a wolf face idk)

i shouldn't be a downer, i'll be picking it up for sure in a few years!

I felt pretty down on Eternal. It's mostly that the combat felt more stressful than exciting - you've got a ton of different systems you're trying to juggle all at once, and as a result it's hard to really get into the flow of combat when you're distracted by whether you need to chainsaw an enemy for ammo or flamethrower for armor, trying to slow down long enough to hit a weak spot on an enemy, etc. I liked 2016 a lot better.

Honestly 2016's gameplay almost pushed me away from it. It was really, REALLY boring until about halfway through the game.

It took me weeks to get through that first half.

Eternal comes out of the gate swinging and was just much more interesting to play.

Heh, it was the opposite for me. I was initially blown away by the frenetic pace and refreshing focus on gameplay, but I began to tire of the gameplay loop maybe halfway in.

2016's gameplay became much less interesting for me as soon as you get the "Have x armor to gain infinite ammo" rune. Sincerely hope there's no equivalent to that in Eternal since it kind of fucked the balance and turned most fights into "hold down fire button on mobile sentry until something (possibly) manages to hit you."

I'd hesitate to even call 2016's first few levels real gameplay.

Was playing on whatever the hardest non-nightmare difficulty (I don't remember if it was hard or if there was a very hard) was and didn't even begin to feel danger until around when Pinkies were introduced. The ability to just get health from enemies meant all you had to do was move right up into things faces, shotgun and finisher them and you're instantly full health again.

Zero thought and zero danger.

The game only became interesting when you can't just beast every enemy you see and instead have to choose targets based on your resources, which basic enemies don't necessitate and the bigger enemies were too few and far between to care about before that because you always had enough rocket launcher or whatever ammo to deal with them instantly.

I'm glad I didn't drop the game because it did eventually become very fun to play, but man I came close to doing so.

So I got my game glitched pretty bad and had to start over Final Sin. I died with the crucible blade out and it spawned me with zero charges and unable to change to weapons and I think I was sunk into the floor. Had to restart the level.

Played the rest out on easy, fun final fight but probably too hard for me on normal anyway.
