Just tried it out now, and it doesn't seem very good to me, but apparently it was the bomb dot com back when it came out.

Is this another example of a game aging poorly or am I missing something

It was that unique looking and controlling game that was kinda fun on the system nobody had. So it was looked at in high regard.

Was it the first console game with analog control? If not it was one of the earliest.

It was the first game I had on Saturn. I wouldn't say it was a very good game then and certainly not now. Even Panzer Dragoon Saga, a game I loved back then from the same system has aged like milk.

Pretty much every 3D game in the 32/64 generation is difficult to go back to now if you didnt play it back then. NiGHTS at least tried to be different, but its difficult to explain why I just love to fly around in the different stages. The score system is really difficult to understand, not to mention some of the boss fights, but its just fun.

But I can name 10 Saturn games I like more.

My only direct exposure to NiGHTS is going through that weird bonus area thingy in the NiGHTS pinball board in Sonic Adventure and thinking (for whatever reason) that it was the coolest thing my young mind had ever seen. I still haven't played it, but I know it's got great music if nothing else!

I played it for the first time last year and loved it. Wrote a short blurb elsewhere:

This game kicks ass. It does a poor job of explaining how everything works, but playing around a little bit allowed me to decipher basically everything. At least what was needed to beat it. It prioritizes movement over anything else, and Nights feels very satisfying to move around. Each level is wonderfully designed and are presented in bite-sized pieces which makes for really quick satisfaction. The final level requires you to be able to beat each stage with a C rank, which I was worried about initially, but all that really implies is a solid grasp of the mechanics. I finished with B or C on my second attempt each time. The last level itself is a culmination of the best bits of the game, encouraging speed and precision, which made it super intense given the time limit. I really wish it were longer, because damn is it a blast. I can see why it's considered a classic.

It's definitely a game you need to fiddle around with for a bit before figuring it out, and once you do, it provides a very specific feel that I'm doubtful many will care about. It's definitely a niche game that only really got as vaunted as it was because of a very tiny but vocal group of Saturn owners, but its still a great game. You just have to be into what it provides, and what it provides Isn't for everyone.

Nights originally came out around the same time as Super Mario 64. I played it right after Super Mario 64 and by comparison Nights was massively unimpressive. It felt like someone took the flying sections of SM64 where you try to collect coins and tried to make an entire game out of that.

I remember thinking at the time, "That's it? If that's the best the Saturn has to offer, Sega is going to get pounded by Nintendo."

Nights was not that great in 1996 and I can't imagine it's very impressive today.

I mean it's unique enough to stand out, and the levels are pretty cool, and because nobody had the system it was originally made on there was a certain mystique about it that attracted people once it finally came out on PS360, but yeah it's not like, thrilling or anything.
