Top 10 Favorite Games of 2020

#8. Astro's Playroom

This is the game that will convince you next gen is here. Sony made a perfectly acceptable short platformer that comes pre-installed on the PS5. What pushes it this high though is that it's also a tech demo for what the DualSense controller is capable of and it's unlike anything I've ever experienced before in video games. The different ways they use resistance in the triggers and and way the haptics feel with every step you take on various surfaces never got old for me and helped immerse me into the action way more than I normally would be.

It also doubles up as a celebration of all things Playstation so it'll get your nostalgia motors going as you collect dozens of different Sony hardware released throughout the years and you run across a ton of other Astrobots dressed up as characters from games that defined the playstation and acting out scenes from those games.

SPOILERS COMING UP IN THIS ONE

Top 10 Favorite Games of 2020

#7. Paper Mario: The Origami King

They finally made Paper Mario good again! Yeah sure it's still not that old battle system so purists probably still can't bring themselves to play it, but I had a blast with this game from beginning to end. The puzzle based battle system makes battles quick and easy (and totally skippable for normal encounters if you really want to get somewhere), but it really shines during the boss battles. It manages to make entertaining and engaging boss against against generic office equipment like staplers and scissors.

The true gem here is that it nails the humor with a good story and some great characters and moments. The biggest and most hard hitting of which is the story arc of Bobby. Once you move to the 2nd major area of the game you come across an amnesiac bob-omb who joins your party. He's a bit of doof and unreliable, but he accompanies you for most of the 1st half of the game. At some point your origami princess, Olivia, gets trapped under a boulder and it blocks your progress forward. This kicks off an entire side story where Bobby starts to regain his memories and has you traveling the open ocean to a haunted cruise ship to regain his missing fuse that was left to him by his friend. A bob-ombs true purpose is to live a short life and go out with a bang and hope they made a difference. Bobby does exactly that and blows himself up to destroy the boulder and free Olivia and clear your way forward to the next area. It's an extremely sad moment that's made even sadder after Olivia realizes what has happened. It's a shocking moment for a Mario game and one I'll never forget any time soon.

Also Luigi's constant running gag the entire game to try to find the key to Peach's Castle is incredible. This is a must play game IMHO.

#6. Demon's Souls

This is one of those games where on the spectrum of remakes that this is 100% the game you remember on PS3, but every single texture and model and has been completely redone and is one of the best looking games I've ever played. I'm frequently just stopping and looking at the environment just to see the work that Bluepoint has done. The massive castle of world 1 is still jawdropping to look at seeing areas where you can reach eventually and figuring out how to get there.

Like Astro's Playroom this is another game that's makes good use of the haptics in the controller. I notice it most when casting a spell or miracle, you can literally feel the spell traveling through the controller and into your hand and then into the game.

There's also general quality of life improvements that let you know exactly what everything does and makes World Tendency mechanics clearer than they were in the past

I don't really need to talk about the gameplay though because it's Demon's Souls. 11 years ago I really struggled with it because it was an entirely new genre of game, but now that we have more souls and soulslikes than you can shake a stick at, it's cool to come back to the genesis of it all and play a more modern version of it.

#5. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV

The 9th game overall in the series and the Endgame of this MCU style saga we've been following for 15 years. So many plot threads from Sky, Crossbell and Cold Steel all come to a head here and it really feels like a Smash Ultimate style EVERYONE IS HERE type of game. There's nearly 40 playable characters over the course of the story and what a story it is. I won't get into the details because people should play Trails games for themselves, but most Trails games are maybe 80ish hours to beat and 100-120 to complete, but for me this one was 120 hours just to beat on its own and 140-150 hours to complete it. Despite that I'm 100% ready to just start playing Hajimari no Kiseki as soon as it gets localized. I did order a used copy from Japan just to mess around with, but because of the pandemic it's still not here over 2 months later.

The only gripe, but an understandable one, is that the focus is still on the new Class VII. They are the main characters of Cold Steel 3 and 4 and they're a great cast as a unit, better than original Class VII was at least. All of the older characters pretty much just rotate in and out of the party so you don't really get to spend a ton of time with them so if anyone thought they were gonna play through the whole game as Estelle or the SSS they'll be a bit disappointed in that regard.

#4. Yakuza: Like a Dragon

With Kiryu's arc ending in Yakuza 6 I was skeptical about them continuing the series with a brand new protagonist. Little did I know they would change it up completely to become a turn based RPG and give us the best main protagonist (and party!) of any game in recent memory. While Kiryu was a guy I think a lot of people would aspire to be as an ideal man, he's built up such a history that it's not a very realistic goal. Ichiban meanwhile instantly relatable. He's a bit naive of how the world works early on, but after the first 2 chapters his endless optimism begins to rub off on you and he feels like a friend you've known your whole life.

The game itself still manages to feel like a Yakuza game despite the change to combat. You're still going around a big district running into various types of dirtbags (of which there's a pokedex for now) and beating them up, doing a bunch of wacky and goofy substories and then occasionally doing the actual story where the real serious events happen. The newer minigames this time include an entire business management sim where you raise a company's stock price to #1 in the region, a direct mario kart ripoff called Dragon Kart and going to vocational school to take exams to raise your personality traits

The battle system itself is kinda basic, but it's trying to be like Dragon Quest so I can understand it. Honestly you can just put it on autobattle most of the time and it takes care of it, although if you're underleveled you might find them burning through your healing items instead of using healing magic. I'm usually not a fan of class systems, but turning classes into real life jobs you have like a chef or an enforcer or a hostess is a fun twist. It really only affects what weapon you equip and what skill you learn. Generally a character's starting class is their best one, but skills you learn and skill boosts you get from leveling them up are permanent so you're encouraged to learn a variety of classes for those bonuses

I spent a good 50 hours with the game so far, but most of it was side content because I love doing side content in Yakuza games. I'm not to chapter 12 yet in the story, but I hear it's a banger so I'm looking forward to seeing it play out.

#3. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2

https://youtu.be/4EY9SXUve6s

Here's the game that felt the best to actually play in 2020. Based on how Tony Hawk HD and Tony Hawk 5 went there was potential for this to go completely wrong and be just as bad as those. Instead they brought in aspects of skating mechanics from Tony Hawk 3 and THUG2 and applied them to remade versions of Tony Hawk 1 and 2 stages and the result is pretty much the best Tony Hawk game in my opinion.

This was great for me because Tony Hawk 3 was my favorite Tony Hawk before this so I felt right at home playing this game. Beyond doing the normal Tony Hawk stuff, this game has an entire challenge and leveling system to keep you playing and things to work on even when you finish the main game.

A group of these challenges ask you to go through each stage and connect a bunch of gaps all around the map in one big combo. Working on these and actually pulling them off was deeply satisfying and kinda makes you feel like a badass?

There's also some neat online modes where you play in 8 player matches performing tricks and capturing gaps with the highest score on that gap and if you're the best player in that room you can just totally style on people.

Still hoping they do Tony Hawk 3 DLC for this game, but I imagine it probably be a 3+4 remake instead. I guess we'll see!

Doubt it, both games are too different to make an effective remake with both. 3 DLC is more likely

Top 10 Favorite Games of 2020

#2. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

It's the GOTY 2010/2011/2012/2016 well you know the joke by now. It was legitimately my GotY in 2012. Like Demon's Souls this game is more than a remaster, but also not quite a remake? I felt it did enough new stuff including having an additional 15 hours of new content to make it eligible for the main list.

The game is certainly no longer ugly to look at as they've gone full anime with these character models. Seeing all my favorite iconic moments again not only in HD but with these beautiful character models was a sight to behold. The remixed music is all very good and I went with them the whole time over the original soundtrack. The real star here though is the QoL improvements especially the sidequest tracking which was much needed for a game with 400+ sidequests.

So wait why isn't it #1?! The main reason here I think is the new post-game content on the Bionis shoulder. While I appreciate that it tries to make some connections to Xenosaga, the story itself isn't anything too remarkable and it becomes evident very quickly that removing Shulk's Monado's abilities made the battle system something very different and not as good as the main game. Once you find all the Nopon Prospectors hidden around the map it also becomes super easy and you just blow through each fight.

Still Xenoblade is a revolutionary JRPG and this is the best version of that game so please play it if you somehow haven't yet.

Top 10 Favorite Games of 2020

#1. Final Fantasy VII Remake

This is a game that shouldn't exist. It's impossible that Square-Enix not only managed to put out a remake of Final Fantasy VII (well part 1 of a Final Fantasy VII remake), but managed to create something that was not only REALLY GOOD but is well liked by both fans old and new. Now the original FF7 is far from my favorite one, like it's not even in my top 5 and I liked FF8 and FF9 more as far as the PS1 games go. As I sit here now though I'm thinking I like this Midgar only chunk of a FF7 remake more than the entirety of original FF7.

This is a remake in all of its definitions. It starts out retelling the story of FF7 in stunning detail with a completely revamped battle system that makes all the party members feel unique and fun to use and with a localization that clearly a step above anything else Square-Enix has ever done. The hand of Nomura is felt as you progress through this story and realize they're not actually remaking FF7, but the story and world and REALITY of FF7 itself. They weave in aspects of Crisis Core and Advent Children and I'm sure they'll be bringing in everything from the Compilation of FF7 into this remake at some point.

There are multiple sephiroths in play here (I think it was 4?) and they all seem to be different versions of him from different points in time or Reunion dudes taking on his persona. Both him and Aerith seems to already know what happens in original FF7 and are working to try to change things in their own ways. Regardless of how the future remake installments go, I think this first one is a masterpiece on its own and is most certainly my Game of the Year.

Most Anticipated

Final Fantasy XVI - Giving FF14 devs a chance at making single player mainline game? Seemingly going in a very mature direction? The main character's name is CLIVE?! Yeah sure sign me up

Resident Evil VIIIage - RE7 was great, definitely a top 5 Resident Evil. Give me more of this first person action and DARK CHRIS.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... - Just plug more Yoko Taro into my veins

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis - SEGA'S MAKING A NEW GENESIS?! HEY SEGA'S MAKING A NEW GENESIS!

Shin Megami Tensei V - I'm still on the SMT > Persona train and a new SMT has been a long time coming.

The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki - Basically a Trails in the Sky 3rd style game meant to wrap up plot threads from the Crossbell and Cold Steel games while also setting up the next story arc.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox - This is out in like 2 weeks! I'm always in for more Ys.

God of War 5 - Dad of Boy 2. That first one was a good Ocarina of Time clone. Maybe this one will be a Majora's Mask clone :O

Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury - 3D World is excellent and Bowser's Fury looks really good so sign me up

Windjammers 2 - Hey I play the first game competitively some times. The new jump button scares me, but I definitely want to try it out.

Cyberpunk 2077 (Completed Version) - One day it'll be fixed and one day I'll buy it. Today is not that day.

New Pokemon Snap - Looks like they didn't screw this up based on the trailers. I'm wary of Pokemon in general these days, but hoping this is good.

Monster Hunter Rise - You can ride a doggo what more do you need

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake - Visually this isn't looking great, but I love those PS2/Gamecube era PoP games so much I'm going to check it out

Somehow I completely forgot to mention for FF7R was Hard Mode. With a limited MP pool and no items it changes how you play that game into a much more skill based action game and not really a JRPG. This was actually what pushed the game to #1 for me because I could enjoy the whole game a 2nd time in a whole new way.
