According to TVTropes, The blue footed boobie bird is where the concept of Magmar originated from.

The bird only inhabits the Galapagos Islands and all of the islands are surrounded by a number of volcanos.

Magmar's Japanese name is boober. And while blue footed boobie bird is not exactly red - this would make sense. And it has a ring to it.

Very fascinating.

I've grown to like Jynx, Electabuzz and Magmar. Hey @Lopen they could be a faction in wrestling.
