I've used Reddit a decent amount over the last 7ish years, it can be quite nice for some of the smaller hobby subreddits, but as any given subreddit grows it just becomes all about the hive mind, and any nuance falls by the wayside. Its kind of designed to function that way, sadly.

I haven't been there in years but I never liked Reddit's system of pushing Upvoted content to the top.

It means everyone competes to be popular rather than interesting so its all one giant circlejerk.

I usually end up on reddit through Google searches, so those topics are usually pretty useful (and archived). I've only had an account there for two years or so for some support group communities. But even those are only worth it for reading and nodding along to, not really having much back and forth other than "I'm sorry that happened to you. Have an upvote." "Thank you for the upvote. I'm also sorry the same thing happened to you."

I mainly use it as a news aggregate for a bunch of niche hobbies. Of course, even niche subs can be shit.

Power Rangers sub is 99% people farming for karma with pics of their toy collection.

A lot of porn subs get spammed by the same handful of accounts posting the same picture every other day.

And the general culture is so annoyingly upbeat, while simultaneously being cringe
and self-deprecating.

theres also this weird feeling that nobody there really understands human behavior at all. Any advice sub is filled with comments like fuck your friends, fuck your wife, fuck those kids, fuck everyone, only you matter. Like all the comments about social life are staunchly Rand style objectivism, which is weird because the dominating political culture is American leftism/liberalism. >_>

I'm stoked to have found this place. You can actually talk to each other. People complain about the mods here all the time, but I've had maybe one interaction with them and I was totally out of line. Nothing compared to the jackass mods at Reddit.

I saw a 4chan meme talking about the users on various social media platforms and it (less politely) pointed out that reddit is morons acting like smart people (as opposed to say, instagram is morons acting like famous people or twitter is famous people acting like morons).

Sometimes I do want to follow the conversation. I'll read all the threads, and a couple hours later refresh and the number of comments has gone up, but now I have to search every thread for new comments. Even in my own posts when I see more comments added to the counter, I have to scan the entire thing to see which thread had a new post in it. It's awful.

Reddit has been around since 2010. I doubt actual Zoomers were on it when they were 4-10 years old. Millenials popularized the forum. Zoomers just joined in later.

All joking aside a lot of "anti-reddit" people dislike the site because they only see the front page. Like another user said, when you get into the niche comminities with rules against shitposting it's a lot better. Mtgfinance, pcbuilding, yugioh, askreddit, and ama are all pretty good for me.

You can't put the whole site under one blanket because it's more like a collection of sites with similar layout. Some are shit like /r/gaming and /r/funny but some are pretty great. Just depends on what you're interested in.

Well when I was 4-10 it was the mid-late 90s so there was no real Internet then. I was more concerned with drawing dinosaurs than shitposting on a forum. Even at 10, my main priority was learning all the cheat codes from the farting chicken in glover.

Yea. It is hilarious how the top discussion has nothing to do with the OP every single time a thread hits r/all.

The title could be James Harden traded to the Nets. And the top discussion is Rage Against The Machine needs to make another album. You can't call it out on reddit you just accept that is how reddit goes or be downvoted.

Reddit is great if you know how to use it. If you're using it to post our of boredom and want a discussion, its not good.

But if I need detailed, trust-worthy advice on ANYTHING, reddit is the go-to site. Infact anything I need these days, I just search "_____ reddit" on google and I get the best results.

You also gotta learn how to navigate the site. Theres a bunch of subreddits filled with idiots. Its fairly easy to recognize.

The organization of a large Reddit thread is just about the worst thing I've ever experienced. I don't know how these people sift through the 60 comments attached to the top post to find another comment to comment on, and so on.

I treat it like Facebook. If you join groups that you are interested in, and hide/ignore the stuff you aren't, then you can have a good time.

These sites aren't bad or good, it's all how you use them. If all you look at it is your uncle's Trump posts on Facebook or 15 year olds giving relationship advice on Reddit, then you are going to have a bad time.

Most criticisms against reddit are true, but overblown at the same time. You get all the BS, but there's great stuff there as well. Depends on where you look. I'm reminded of when people would trash the IMDB boards. Yeah there are tons of dumbasses there, but there were great discussions on certain boards. Like reddit, it was good for niche things.
