The grammar is all over the place. Even native English speakers get them wrong. There are more exceptions than rules.

If the brits didn't sail around the world colonising and stealing shit from half the world. English wouldn't be universal language

What do you think would be a better for universal language? German? Arabic?

I have no clue but I'm sure as hell that English is one of the worst. I hope multilingual users on here can tell me.

German has a really high learning curve and long ass words.
french has a shitload of exceptions.
portuguese is funny Spanish.

that leaves us with English, Spanish, and Italian.

english is simple when compared to languages such as German or even Spanish (eg English has you and Spanish has tu, usted and vosotros) but its not phonetic. You really cant know how a word sounds in English just by reading it.

Spanish has the HUGE advantage that it is phonetic. If you can learn how the letters sound you can know how words sound just by reading them. But verb conjugation in Spanish is painful as fuck.

that leaves us with Italian. Its sexy, suave, and simple. Heck, it doesnt even have the letter W!

italian wins, ragazzo

As a first language yes; but for overall usage, English is first. But this topic (or rather, the kinds of things this topic is complaining about) are really good examples of why it shouldn't be.

The rules are simple; the problem is the ridiculous number of exceptions to the rules. And then the exceptions to the exceptions. Etc.

Well English isn't a standardized language per se like Spanish(Castilian), so that complicates matters a little. I wouldn't choose Arabic as Fu97a would be like recreating Classical Latin and the dialects are in a Vulgar Latin stage

Spanish - I have been told - has way more idiosyncratic expressions than you would ever think.

While English is used for reason stated by tc, English works because native English speakers do not trouble themselves to be especially literate in it and American schools stopped teaching grammar a long time ago.

I found this link to typical adult English speaker has an active vocabulary of 20,000 words. https://tinyurl.com/y322xnv7

In terms of actual word usage, The Reading Teachers Book of Lists claims that:
  • the first 25 words are used in 33% of every day writing
  • the first 100 words are used in 50% of adult and student writing
  • the first 1,000 words are used in 89% of every day writing

So English is the universal language because everyone is too lazy to grammar check? Makes sense.

English never had a proper reform or standardizing body.

Everyone complains about the grammar but compared to other languages, sentences can be quite short and drop a lot of articles and prepositions.

English is amazing grammatically. There is no gender and conjugating verbs is incredibly easy.

The only thing that makes English difficult is the pronunciation which is a result of how many languages it has borrowed from (and yes 'from which it was borrowed' would be more correct but no one actually cares).

Can we all at least agree Japanese is the worst?

4 alphabets, one of which has 2000+ characters you need to be literate.
Different ways to conjugate verbs depending on who you're talking to.
No future tense.

It's so fucking stupid. I love learning it, but mother FUCK it is all over the place.

You know that. I know that. We know that, despite of and wouldve not actually sounding the same.

If a native speaker (i.e. anyone who grew up with the language and learned it in school) does not know that, is it a problem with the language or a problem with the student?
