What does your friend want?
Something
- under $1k
- Capable of handling audio editing and maybe some light gaming, but I have a Series X so the latter isn't really a motivating factor here.
- portability also not a major concern; I'm not traveling with it.

I currently have a Chromebook that does most of what I use it for, but it'd be nice if it could do more so I could use my desktop less.

Lenovo brand is your best bet. Browse them and see what you can find. They make excellent machines.

ASUS

I've been eying this, we're waiting on it to go to 1k before buying it, and the second screen in the keyboard is kinda gimmicky based on reviews, but otherwise it's a solid product - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0869JVMLY/

VivoBook wouldn't be too bad, either - www.amazon.com/dp/B088KSRX51/ - you just have a lower quality keyboard and display.

I've gone through a lot of companies - Acer, Alienware (when it was still independent), HP, Compaq, Lenovo, MSI. The ASUS laptop I purchased a few years ago is hands down the best one I've ever purchased.

I have a pretty sweet Acer but then again I bought that with the express purpose of heavy gaming.

I ended up with an MSI about 2 weeks ago

Got it at Costco. The one I was trying to find they didn't have. And got shown the MSI and a combination of weak will, impatience and trusting the clerk, I went with it. Though I did google MSI while still in the store

Anyway they are Chinese which might raise some flags but supposedly they are well known in Asia for gaming hardware. I havent had any problems yet with it

@Zikten Don't know if it's still a problem but MSI have up until recent years at least had a notoriety for slow boot times. My issue was that it would work for like ten minutes and then freeze - I don't remember what the fix was but I had to try like twenty different steps to figure it out.

I havent encountered anything like that yet. But anyway I probably won't stick with this one as long as I usually do

It's kinda medium range for gaming. And I will likely upgrade again in like 3 to 4 years probably. So its whatever. Maybe next time depending on how this goes I might try to hold out for a higher end system. But this way I saved some money

I repair laptops for a living and I second Lenovo. HP is not that bad either.

Dell is taking a chance.
