Most of the ones I see that are big into church as an adult usually had a childhood where they went, but never forced all the crazy rules on them. Most of the ones who described childhoods like this always turned on their parents in like middle or high school when they couldnt have friends, or couldnt make any. Or couldnt date the person they wanted to or liked... Its not like its a guarantee or anything. She guilted him into associating a consequence that held no relationship to his actions/deeds with what he was doing so she could get the outcome she desired and punish her child indirectly. His actions were met with disapproval for interacting with a friend outside of the faith and receiving a gift from them and in order to receive approval again he had to discard the item, almost certainly sever the friendship as well, or else be ostracized and potentially bring down the wrath of god. Notice that she didn't suggest he return the toy but, instead, discarded it into the garbage. There were other options avaible for getting rid of the toy but, for the message, it being thrown out in the trash. She didn't even offer to buy a replacement toy or ask why he liked it and found an 'acceptable' alternative. It was purely about punishment. This isn't the same as a parent teaching a child that lying is wrong or even a Christian parent teaching their child about their faith. It's a cultist punishing her child for engaging in activities the cult disapproves of and abusing her status as a parental figure (specifically the mother whom children look up to immensely) to further brainwash her own child. Edit: Also notice that he was NOT rewarded for his 'positive' action of discarding the toy. Rather it was a regression to the norm with a minor punishment (he lost the toy and possibly his friendship). The only way he can maintain the norm is to continue in his devotion and the only way he can get positive rewards is to grow more devoted. I've heard the joke that the difference between a cult and a religion is the size. While mildly funny that's not true. A religion deals with things like explaining the unknown, encouraging followers to do 'good' deeds, fulfilling spiritual needs, building a sense of shared culture and community, and so-forth. A cult's purpose is to show slavish devotion to the faith and the central figure and, while recruitment is positive, actual association with people outside of the cult is frowned upon. The goal is to make the followers fully and wholly devoted to the cult where they must fanatically prove their devotion constantly simply to maintain the approval of the cult. A feat that gets harder and harder the higher up in the cult you grow resulting in increasingly fanatical behavior simply to maintain status.
