Is it really necessary? I don't think I've gone over 80mph in the 4+ years I've been driving.

It depends on the part of the country and, for that matter, the country itself.

I've gotten cars up to 90mph, but those were mostly shit cars on roads where there's always a chance of getting pulled over (meaning you can never really open up anyway).

Give me a sports car without a limiter and either wide-open roads where I know there are no cops, or an actual racetrack, and it wouldn't be hard to top out at all.

But most people want extreme mph for the same reason some people drive trucks five times larger than they'll ever need, and why nerds build computers with ridiculous neon cooling systems. It's compensation.

Downhill on the autobahn I have gone quite fast, not that I have every really felt the need to go over 120 outside of that.

I have coastal evacuation routes near where I live.

My thought when I see the signs is always that they'd be mostly useless, because if you find out something is coming with little forewarning, you're going to wind up stuck in traffic anyway as everyone tries to get away at the same time.
