I prefer...

as you know, self checkout is the wave of the future...even walmart has more self checkout slots than actual cashiers now which means automation is inching closer and closer to reality..

But which do you prefer if you could choose? old people no doubt will choose cashier cause it's harder for them to check everything out...or they like to chit chat with the person.

Millennials and younger people however prefer self checkout cause it's more convenient although it's also easier to STEAL too which not every store is on board with just yet..

But which do you prefer?

Depends on lines and how many items you have, I have seen pretty intense lines for self checkout. With a full shopping cart, I would bet on the trained cashier+bagger to easily beat almost anyone at the self checkout line assuming no lines for either.

Sure if you have 10 or less items self checkout is faster, unless we are talking lines.

If I'm grabbing a roll of duct tape, a gallon of milk and some condoms, self checkout. A handful of items is easier to get in and out with that way.

If I have a week's worth of groceries, I'd feel like an asshole going to the self-checkout and slowing down the people that are in a hurry to grab a few things and be on their way.

I actually hate self-checkout. Those things often have problems that you need a person to fix. It's easier with a cashier. I find the process faster with a cashier. Furthermore, we need more jobs for people.

Kinda a fourth option, because it can depend on who's manning the register.

Even if you have a full cart, it can be faster especially if they have devices that allow you ring things up as you're walking and then the self-check is just paying at the end.

Amazon had a store concept that would automatically charge people's cards with anything they walked out with. I have no clue what happened to that concept but that is my dream store, literally walk in grab whatever you want then walk right out the door, everything is automatically charged to a card.

I prefer cashier, but unfortunately so do most other people.
So the cashier always has lines of people while the self checkout is mostly empty and immediately available.
So if I don't have much stuff, I'll use self check out.

(Of course part of that is b/c there's only ever 1 or 2 cashiers at a time anymore, so you're kind of pushed to use the self check out)

The thing that makes self checkout faster is they usually have one line for 8 check stands, in a normal line one customer who doesn't understand how to use a card or wants to pay with a check will slow the whole thing down.

Revelation34 posted...
Self check out is like 90% faster.

Not if you have a ton of items... When you have a cart full of items, you can continue taking them out while someone else scans and bags. Where in a self checkout, you do it all. Much faster with a second person doing it. If you have a second person, its probably still slower. Especially if you dont have a belt or anything...

I mean, in a line with a cashier, theyre scanning and bagging while youre still taking items out of your cart. Meaning that it would definitely take longer if you were taking all your items out of your cart before scanning and bagging. And if you scanned and bagged as you took items out of the cart, it would definitely move slower, as that is an inefficient way to do it...

I remember watching a show where a guy showed how to steal from the store. Anyway, the reason its not a thing is because Amazon is a different kind of store. And they are still working on it. But they are also trying to make is a humanless store. No cashiers, no stockers, no people at all. Plus, AFAIK, Amazon uses the app, which works different from other stores apps...

This. Mostly the number of items I have. For bigger orders, it makes more sense to have somebody else ring them in (and bag them, depending on the store and whether or not there's a global pandemic afoot that prohibits them from touching my bags) while I unload them than to struggle to fit everything into the scale area of the self-checkout and frequently have to involve somebody else so I can remove things. For smaller orders, self-checkout makes more sense. I basically end up treating self-checkout as an express lane.

Most of the time self checkout, except for if I am at a place where the self check-out requires you to bag the item you just scanned before scanning the next thing. Or if I am buying alcohol, because in those cases you still need someone to confirm your ID before they will let you walk out. Or (finally) if the self-checkout has a huge line and some cashiers are just sitting at the register twiddling their thumbs.

If I have around 10 items or less, self checkout absolutly.
If its more than 15, I'll load up that cashier line, if there's a bagger its even better.
The problem with some self checkouts is not much space in the bagging areas once its after 15 items.

Yeah. Once you fill up a bag or a few, you have to move them to the cart before you can bag more...

Self checkout as long as there's not a long line. I used to be a cashier and I'm better at scanning and bagging than the general grocery store employee. Like that meme of Ron Swanson at the hardware store saying "I know more than you." If there's a long line at self checkout I'll opt for a normal line because the average consumer is not faster than the average cashier. In fact, many of them are stupid and don't understand basic, simple, and intuitive concepts. Managing a self checkout line in the past and being a cashier in general really exemplified how many oblivious idiots are out there.

Edit: Also, if I feel like shoplifting a little bit that day it's exponentially easier doing so through self checkout.

Huh, reading through this made me realize that apparently most of the places y'all shop at don't have item limits for self checkout.

Here pretty much every self checkout is limited to usually 16 items, depending on the store. So if you have a full cart, you have to use a cashier. Which makes sense because a cashier will absolutely be faster than you if you have a full cart.

The concept is live. Amazon Go. I think the first one debuted sometime last year. There's a few videos of people on YouTube doing it.

That's a purposeful design feature to actively discourage people with lots of items from using self checkout. Where I worked self checkout was explicitly meant to be an alternative to the express lanes and not for a full cart. We would redirect people with too many items. Not every place has the rule explicitly stated or labeled, but the design of the self checkouts is very clearly implicit of being express.

This depends how many items. If i 10 or fewer maybe. If it have a full on cart filled, putting on the belt, having them scanning and bagger bagging is going to be quicker.

But I'd say about 75% I self check out.

When I shop at Sam's Club, I make sure to put everything in the cart with the barcodes facing up if I can. Then I just go BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP and wait for the computer to catch up so I can press PAY.

I wish companies would put barcodes all over their products like Aldi, it'd make things so much faster.

I will use the regular checkout if I have something unusual, like booze or drugs that require age verification, or stuff they keep locked up like small electronics.
