We've always had like 10-ish people on here who played it. Even as far back as MH3. Names change tho. Series has never really been as big on B8 as it is with like every other gaming community, World was so big tho that I think it has broad casual appeal now.

haha this was me. i have a buddy that has always loved these games and he'd put on the recent release on whenever I'd come by to hang out and try to get me into it and it'd always go like this

https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2013/04/01

I always felt like the gameplay was stiff, clunky, and awkward, and just... not fun, even if i like the idea of hunting monsters and and gathering gear

Somehow with World I really got into it. I kinda felt the same way about the gameplay. Every weapon like the gameplay greatsword is just so slow and clunky. I tried the dual blades but they were the opposite... too spammy and out of control. Then I tried the Insect Glaive and took to the skies and it felt amazing. I really enjoyed it. I tried to other weapons that looked cool but even though theres like 15 different weapons with varied styles they all felt clunky. But at least the insect glaive was awesome. Once I had my weapon, the wonderful environment exploration, boss fights, following monsters, and weapon progression paths were suddenly open to me and I really liked the game.

Then I stopped playing for a few months when I got to Iceborne endgame and then tried to go back in... and the gameplay felt stiff and clunky and awful, even the insect glaive, and I could not bear to play it at all

What a strange experience. We'll see if I can get into Rise.

lol, the insect glaive is what I just tried in the Rise demo and "stiff and clunky and awful" is exactly what I felt. I'm sure I didn't spend enough time on it, and presumably there's more to attacking then just hitting A and X, which is basically all I did (with some attempts at a slow and clunky dodge roll sprinkled in). But yeah. I might try some other weapons, but I just don't expect to enjoy it.

Now Monster Hunter Stories 2 on the other hand, that's more my jam.

Insect Glaive typically feels bad unless you've juiced up, although I'm not sure how that's changed for Rise.

Downloading now. I'd always tried to get into MH but the handheld iterations made my hands hurt and didn't feel right. World hooked me and I'm all in now. Hammerbro (secondary IG) for life.

Insect Glaive and Dual Blades both have actively horrible move sets by design until you active their unique mechanics. (Red essence for glaive and Demon Mode for blades.) Starting with World, MH probably has some of the smoothest combat I've ever seen in any game, but it definitely has a learning curve. (14 learning curves, technically, depending on how many weapons you're keen on trying!)

Downloaded this yesterday but won't be able to check it out until tonight - looking forward to it! Won't be buying until the leaked PC version drops, so hopefully it won't be too painful of a wait.

Insect Glaive is a bad weapon to try until you've figured out how to "figure out" a monster hunter weapon. I spent a lot of time in the practice area trying out the weapons before I figured out what makes the glaive shine. It has a very basic attack combo normally, but it has two unique mechanics that you probably wouldn't normally figure out.

#1: You can enter an aiming mode where you shoot your insect at something, this isn't typically used for damage, but for extracting buffs from the monsters you fight when you recall the insect.

#2: aerial combat baby. There's a command where you use your glaive to throw yourself up into the air, and once you are up there, you can start executing attacks on nearby enemies, and if you keep hitting stuff you keep yourself jumping around in the air. It kinda feels like flying, and it's awesome. If you do enough damage up there you can also do the mount mechanic where you jump on a monsters back and can knock them down.

Once I figured out how that worked I was all in. I tried other weapons but none ever really clicked like that, even though i was interested in some like the Switch Axe and Charged Blade. The weapons are all just way too slow to really be fun. When the large monsters are so mobile and reactive to your movements I really don't know how it's fun to slowly move around with a slow swinging weapon.

The learning curve for these games are pretty freakin' massive, but I think World (and now Rise) did a lot to make it more accessible.

As mentioned above, a LOT of it has to do with finding which weapon works for you. There are 14 different types, and while it might be easy to think that they all work similarly but have different moves like in other video games, they actually all have VERY different gameplay styles from one another, and all change the way you play the game significantly. A big mistake I feel is that many people only try a few weapons and then give up if it doesn't work out. But it's a good idea to try them all out and find out which one "clicks" for you. Every player is different. A lot of people find that Dual Blades or Longsword work best for them, but for me I didn't really get into the game until I tried Switch Axe, which is considered to be a very newbie-unfriendly weapon. Sometimes it's just all about trial and error.

Additionally, the games don't do a great job at all at explaining the combos and gameplay mechanics of each weapon that well. Once you understand them, the gameplay experience opens up a LOT. I highly recommend looking at the weapon tutorials Arekkz Gaming made for World (while not exact, most of the moves transferred over to Rise) to get an understanding on how to use the weapons. They reveal a lot of critical information towards using the weapon that the in-game tutorial doesn't. It may seem like a bit of a commitment, but honestly, every time I watched one of these videos for a weapon I hadn't tried before, it made me want to rush out and try them out immediately and I ended up having a lot of fun doing it:

EDIT: Also want to mention, the reason I linked to Arekkz's Monster Hunt World guides is because he hasn't uploaded all videos for how the weapons work in Rise yet, but he's doing so currently, so you might to check those out on his channel instead if there's one up, in case there are major differences in the weapon in the new (like Hunting Horn), or to understand the button press changes going from Playstation to Switch. That said, because it's from the demo, they're not as in-depth as the World guides, so it might be worth watching both if you're really interested in a weapon type.

Yeah. I was so confused at first. I kept on trying to figure out how to play songs. Then I realized you play them automatically now! You can play the notes to immediately get the buff, and if you play one of each note, you can use the performance to unleash all three songs at once as a powerful attack. Performance by itself just grants Self-Improvement. If you damage the monster enough, you build up a meter to the left of your songlist. When the meter is full, you can press ZR after doing the three-song performance or after the X Silkbind attack to do another powerful Performance move that grants you a new extra buff. The A Silkbind attack is simply a ridiculously powerful move.

So you essentially have three powerful Limit-break style moves. Song maintenance is no longer really a thing. You can just keep buffs up by regularly attacking, or by using the triple-song Performance. You might want to intentionally prime the Triple-Song when you can so you have a strong move to use when you need it, but the A Silkbind attack should be used when you have an opening. Otherwise just keep attacking to build up your meter. Hunting Horn is so much fun now, and I had already thought it was pretty fun before.

They did my boy the Glaive dirty so far lmao. But other than that I'm having a lot of fun. Especially because this version of Mizutsune is really damn good, way more aggressive and active than it was in low or even high rank probably Generations. I love Mizu and they did a great job on it here.

Yes

But you can just go delete your save data for the demo in order to get another 30, so in practice the limit is pretty useless and trivially bypassed.
