33. Beat a game with a robot/artificial lead

Astro's Playroom

I had heard people say good things about it, but I expected to bounce off it. I tend to be less enthusiastic about 3D platformers than a lot of people, and I figured it was getting extra credit because it was free. When I booted it up and saw it was going to focus on controller gimmicks, my optimism dropped further. Thankfully, I was wrong. I enjoyed it quite a bit, especially most of the controller gimmicks. I'd buy a full version of this... Well, if it didn't also have to buy a PSVR, anyway.

30. Beat a game with a female lead

Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King

Fun little Zelda-style game, the storybook framing device was a nice touch but I wish more was done with it.

I picked up Age of Calamity today. It seems alright. I think the best comparison I can make is going from Melee to Smash Ultimate. It's flashier and prettier and technically more advanced, but it doesn't feel as tight or satisfying to play as the older game. Hyrule Warriors also looked very crisp and defined while AoC looks like it got hit by a bloom tornado. It's not bad, but it was a lot easier to tell at a glance what I was looking at in the first game.

All that said it's still good. One thing I can give it is that all the characters I've unlocked so far have been fun to play. I never felt like I was only playing as someone because I was forced to pick them.

8. Beat a spin-off or a game that rebooted a franchise

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

41. Beat a game with a Metascore above 90

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes Of An Elusive Age (92). I really did not like this game. I won't list all the reasons as much of it probably falls into personal preference, but I will say the most egregious offense: the game is unbelievably slow. I've never played a game where the camera moves at a snail's pace even when set at max speed. Even the battles at max speed kind of drag.

12. Beat a game made by a developer you've never tried

Cyber Shadow (Mechanical Head Studios). After the 230 hour slog from DQ11, this was a nice short refresher, clocking in at 6 hours. I enjoyed it quite a bit, reminds me of Ninja Gaiden but without the bullshit.

7. Beat a game in a series you've already played some of
Ori and the Will of the Wisps- clearly superior iterative sequel to a game I already liked!

46. Beat a game you received for free or through a paid subscription service
Hypnospace Outlaw- really interesting game, wasn't sure at first but it hooked me by the time I finished it. Appreciate what they did here a lot.

14. Beat a JRPG
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition- 10/10 adored it, worth the wait!

Running out of free slots! The 'beat a game with x as a central theme' categories are tough to nail a game down to.

6. Beat a game in a completely new series

Bleed

This and its sequel were short but pretty fun, and they were bundled on the switch for like 5 dollars so I can't say I regret getting them.

47. Play a technically unbeatable game for at least six hours

Littlewood

Stardew Valley wasn't as relaxing as I wanted because of the timer, this is a lot better for me because there's no real-time pressure. I don't think it has an ending because of the kind of game it is but if it does I can always move it somewhere else.

32. Beat a game with a non-white lead
Alien Breed: Assault

It's open to interpretation but the MC's skin is considerably darker in-game than the publicity shots. It's never mentioned what his origin is so he could probably be whatever one wants. Except maybe female.

I also seem to have forgotten to update my score at some point, because i've definitely done 21 (now), not the 19 i'd previously noted.

14. Beat a JRPG

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. I hated the original when it came out, and this was my first time going back to FF12. The story is still the major weak spot; after replaying several other games in the series recently it seemed to me that there were far fewer cutscenes compared to all the others. I still don't like the art design although the FMVs do look great. The soundtrack remains one of the weakest in the series (nothing is offensive, but nothing is really memorable either). However, the gameplay is where this really shines. I remembered liking the gambit system even back in the day, and I still do now. In fact, I liked the gameplay so much that I got the platinum for this game, which I can't say for any other Final Fantasy (mainly cause the others had at least one stupid trophy/achievement, or in FF9's case half of them are dumb).

Crosscode- great stuff.

19. Beat a platformer
New Super Lucky's Tale- exactly what I was after, a light fun platformer hearkening back to the PS1 era. Lots of the dialogue was pretty good but Lucky himself annoyed me.

24. Beat a game with romance as a central theme
Genesis Noir- could half-fit this into a bunch of categoriers but it feels most natural here. I don't really want to say anything about this game, I went into it knowing nothing and I think that's the best way to experience it.
