Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4)

Kind of peculiar that this was (much) lighter on gunplay and heavier on puzzles and platforming, but it worked out great in the end.

New Pokemon Snap (Switch)

The final illumina Pokemon and its stage were kind of a letdown, and even though I expected nothing from the story I still went "that's it?" at the finale. Otherwise I have been enjoying it.

Vampyr (PS4)

I enjoyed Life is Strange enough that I wanted to check out some more Dontnod games. Vampyr was free on PS+ one time and I finally got around to playing it. The combat is pretty janky but the setting and and premise is pretty cool. I feel like they dropped the ball in the final two chapters or so but for the most part it was a fun game.

Dragon Sinker (Vita)

One of the many jRPG titles from Exe-Create and Kemco that are on pretty much every platform these days. This game however has a very in-depth job system that makes the game a lot of fun to experiment with different combinations throughout the entire game. I played the entire game on the hardest difficulty and like you would expect, the first few bosses are pretty tough and then it gets easier as you unlock more skills from the different jobs. It definitely tries to emulate the feel of a NES RPG too much at times - even down to the graphics and music. I enjoyed this one a lot more than the other title I played from this group (Antiquia Lost) and might try a few more in the future. Perfect 20 hour RPG for the Vita and there's more content after beating the game that I will try out at a later date.

Enderal: Forgotten Stories (PC)

Not even close. No contest. This is my game played of the year. It's so beautiful. It doesn't do Skyrim justice. It turns everything into this awesome little adventure. And the themes. God. I knew where it was going and I wasn't ready for the end still. I haven't felt like this since playing Iconoclasts but that game didn't take itself seriously much and this one just pulled existentialism completely straight. Also kinda funny since I had just played Mass Effect. Seeing as that game's ultimate plot mirrors this one---ancient inevitable beings who exist outside our understanding, manipulating the entire world in order to bring about their self-annihilation, only to do it all over again.

There's alot I wanna say about this game and I might've made this post too early as I'm fresh out of the post-game funk. So maybe I'll come up with a decent writeup in the future. All I can say is, this game lingered for awhile in a manner who's themes are similar to the game itself. It was like Spec-Ops: The Line where the only to win was to not play at all. But unlike that game, it was all over in 15-ish levels. This one took its time. Set things up. The well-writteness of it, as well as the voice acting really sold things. Sold everything. God, this game.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (PS4)

Wow. What a sequel. This one goes even deeper than the first. The second half is quite epic. I do prefer the atmosphere of the first game though, and I feel like a lot of stuff still wasn't really explained enough at the end, mainly 3 things; "The Ultimate Imposter", the very similar situations and trials compared to the first one and Nagito Komaeda knowing way too much way before he discovered the "Remnants of Despair" stuff in Chapter 4. Maybe I just missed stuff myself. Nevertheless, that final chapter was delicious. The game was one truly meta experience. Very much looking forward to V3, but I'm going to take a little break after playing 1 and 2 consecutively.

Demon's Souls (PS5)
Okay, I pretty much cheated via cloud save backup at the end because the final boss's level drain attack, and my first failure to recover the souls from it caused too much stress to my BF who was watching and occasionally participating. I regret it, but it really wouldn't have been an enjoyable grind to try to cope with that properly. Other than that it's a great game and I look forward to playing more of the series.

Mega Man ZX Advent (Switch)

And that completes the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection! Four games I had not played before, and two I did (Zero 1 and ZX), so overall it was very much worth the price. ZX Advent was the last one I still needed to beat and overall, it's probably in my bottom two from this collection together with Zero 4. For some reason, I couldn't appreciate this one as much as I wanted to, even if it's still a good game. I did not like the harder stages in combination with ZX's world structure, even though this one isn't quite as open. Some of the stages bordered more on being frustrating than being a fun challenge in terms of traps, often instant death, that you can't really see until it's too late. Bosses were diverse and challenging, so that was good. The final boss seemed weirdly easy considering how brutal some final bosses in this Zero/ZX series have been, but oh well. The forms, although numerous, weren't great though imo. They felt more like tools you find in Metroidvania's to uncover hidden stuff than boss powers like it should be in Mega Man. Also, oh my god, stop transforming back to model A every single time text appears. Nevertheless, a good game. The only main games I have yet to beat are X5-X8, but I don't think that's every going to happen. Maaaaybe X8 at some point, or I might finish up the final stages of X5, but X6 and X7 are both just hopeless games.

I'm back with a clear head to rant about Enderal.

Okay first off, Get This Game. Seriously. It's free if you have Skyrim (its a total conversion mod), and I do believe it has an SE edition for SE Skyrim as well. This game is so so so far from what Skyrim is. Bethesda take notes. Although it takes place some years after Nehrim: At Fate's Edge which in turn is a total conversion mod of Oblivion, it is not necessary to play. And in case you're curious the devs worked on 2 more games: Arktwend and Myar Aranath, both TCMs of Morrowind. Only the former has an english patch (sub only). All 4 games are part of a created universe called Vyn. These games are known as "The Vyn Saga".

In fact Enderal is the only game with English dubbing and my oh my the writing and the voice-acting is divine. There is more emphasis on dialogue and discourse when it comes to interactions. Plot-moving things to say are clearly marked, letting you know that there are a ton of other lines from which to explore the lore and hear people talk. Apart from the rather limited things the normal NPCs say you'll be hearing quite alot as everyone in this game actually talks like a normal person. This isn't really a problem because there aren't alot of towns and so if you just keep hearing the same thing in the same town, you sort of just get used to it.

From the moment you land on the titular continent, Enderal has lots to offer. About six to eight biomes all distinct. Every dungeon is uniquely made. There are collectibles to find; you be hard pressed to 100% the achievements in this game. The enemies though lacking in variety are very well placed and more importantly do not level up with you. This gives you a subtle way of knowing when exactly you can explore a certain area. That is to say, you might not be able to tell if you like me, decided to play like Skyrim and go stealth archer only to be mauled by the first set of wolves.

Indeed the system for levelling was revamped to something more CRPG. You get points every level up to distribute abilities to. But also, you have to actually purchase skill books to learn the appropriate skill and every 25 levels the books ratchet up the price. I find this a very good strategy so as not to immediately bloat your wallet to ridiculous levels. Of course, if you just go straight for the Rhetoric skill then yeah bartering becomes Skyrim-levels of dumb. Incidentally, you'll wanna do it anyway as Rhetoric gives you some very unique dialogue to be sure.

Let's get to the meat of things. The plot and the themes this game explores. Enderal is not a happy tale. It is a somewhat deconstructing romp through a traditional heroic storyline. But it doesn't try to be as in your face as possible with the deconstruction. It plays out more like a swamp of a novel; it hooks you in slowly with beautiful bits of description, giving you a sense of wonder before it absolutely devours you and before you know it you have to see it through the end even though you might dread what's beyond that door. I'm trying really hard to sell this game without spoiling it, because it is just something you have to witness. I haven't played anything this dark since idk Memoria? And that was a point-click adventure.

The themes of this game are tied to "Endings". There is nary a source of life outside the capital. Animals are going rabid. Undead are rising again. Bandits strewn across the land. It seems like the world is on the brink of extinction. The falling apart of humanity both physically and mentally is nigh. Especially the latter. The game is very good at showing you how a person just breaks down no matter how valiant they can be. The sidequests are 90% either tragic in hindsight, or twisted into an undesirable outcome on the last minute. In fact the one quest that ends pretty well for everyone involved with no twists whatsoever felt like a twist in itself because I was expecting something to happen.

Now here's the part where I go into a bit of Spoiler territory and tell you how I love/hate how it ends. Because the end is just...its one of those makes you think about life kind of games. Basically, you start off as this "Chosen One" despite being an Outsider and is prophesized to prevent something called The Cleansing which has to the shock of many been happening for aeons. Everytime, the same thing. So you go have some adventure, discovering things you think the bad guys are keeping from you and a plan is made to defeat an enemy that can't be fought and what happens.

You all die.

It turns out that everything. Even being The Chosen One. Was the plan all along. What every Cycle has been doing to try and save themselves from The Cleansing was the Cleansing. The Silver Lining? Pffff. Alright, the silver lining is you're actually the first person to self-actualize as "an agent of the bad guys". And so now you have 2 choices: The Bad Ending in which you sacrifice yourself to prevent the Cleansing of the world...only affecting the entire Enderalean continent. Or The Worse Ending in which you just gtfo and let the entire world of Vyn cleanse itself, escaping in order to become a new god for the next Cycle hoping that The Cleansing doesn't happen again. The new edition updated with a secret ending in which you just die but in your dreams everything is awesome. So yeah.

So yeah I think I'm done gushing about this game. Best game I've played this year. Definitely washes off the bad taste of Greedfall in my mouth. Go play this game. And if you got questions about it, just ask em.

SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection: Ristar (360)

Fun enough platformer. I loved the graphics and sound, there was definitely a lot of love put in there. On a gameplay level, I definitely had to get used to the pacing. Most platformers push you to go fast; Mario has a timer and Sonic just wouldn't be Sonic if you're taking your time. But Ristar allows for a slower approach where you can kinda look around and find your way through the level, which I enjoyed. I wonder if I would've been better if I had played this on a Genesis; I'm not great at platformers, but I feel analog stick control definitely did this game no favours. It feels so janky and inconsistent at times, which is especially problematic in regards to the way you wall-jump and have to hit certain enemies. That definitely frustrated me at times. All in all still a fun romp.

Cloud Cutter (PC)

Kind of an unknown game on Steam right now if the reviews are any indication. Cloud Cutter is a shmup that leans more on 19XX and Raptor games than touhou. It's all about blowing shit up and feeling good about it instead of dodging insane patterns. There's alot of modernized qol improvements such as different kinds of bullet colors, realistic enemies and explosions, depth (bullets and enemies getting bigger the nearer they approach you), and the most controversial change a health bar with enemies dropping health upon death when you get too low. Luckily you can change the latter in the options menu.

The game has no story and no context. You start, and you have 13 missions to complete. With the way the last one ended, I feel like there should be more on the way and in fact the devs have expressed a DLC or two. But tbh, this is a very valiant effort and a sub-genre to shmups that takes you back to the arcade days. It might not be Mars Matrix or Jamestown, but its got its own thing goin on.

Spanky's Quest (Switch/SNES)

Replayed. I played this one about two years ago. I also played it when it first came out many years ago back in 1992.
You play as a monkey named Spanky and you go through levels to collect keys from evil fruit. You fight a boss at the end of each area. You use a magic ball that has 4 power levels that change when you bounce it on your head and they each have different properties of speed and power, a Baseball, Soccer Ball, Volleyball and Basketball. The magic ball can even stun enemies and even retrieve items for you. You can also find bonus levels and wear many different hats that give you different attributes.

Fun game with a catchy soundtrack.

Between this, Limbo/Inside, and Never Alone, I think this was the puzzle death platformer that I was most irritated by, not so much from difficulty as from the inconsistent stealth mechanics and stingy checkpoint placement. But it's not bad. Some really grotesque monster designs help.
Come to think of it there are more punishing Japanese ones like Dokuro and A Rose in the Twilight, but they earn it better.

Nancy Drew 32: Sea of Darkness (PC)

This took a great while to get back into. Part of it was because I had already played this one and was debating playing it again so recently. But I'm glad I did. I discovered parts that I thought I knew but didn't. ND32 holds a special place for me. It was one of the first ND games I've ever played, maybe the one that really got me into this series. I used to await the series until the whole drama with game 33 happened (tl;dr change in management at Her Interactive and the decision to change engines to Unity made the dev cycle reaaaaaally long in a game series where 2 games are churned every year).

And that's when I decided. I was going to go back and suffer through the old games, playing them in order until ND33 got made. Or if it didn't, I would've lost this cosmic bet I made to myself. But luckily enough, it finally did release and I hear it is not good. But I'm a fan now so I'm gonna have to play it and see for myself.

As for the game itself, I think its great. My opinion of it is stronger than before. I couldn't understand the format of an ND game back then and thought it was just a regular point-click affair but knowing where its come from and how much has changed...essentially several liberties have been taken in ND32 that's different from previous affairs. I'm gonna save myself the embarrassment of geeking out on the subtleties of this game because nobody will understand. But I'll give you an example: I was amazed that for the first time Nancy finds herself in two death-defying traps instead of the mandatory one that I've been getting for the past 31 games. It's such a refreshing twist.

The game itself is still a treasure hunt essentially, but now its way entrenched in the central plot of another mystery. All the suspects actually have stakes and character developments that happen throughout the game and the villain ultimately did it for other reasons than just being a greedy sonofabitch. I think this game has one of the most sympathetic culprits actually.

Gamewise, there are puzzles I've never seen before so right off the bat it didn't recycle anything. It even had a primitive version of the 1024 game you see in mobile phones nowadays. There's even one puzzle that lampshades the fact that its extremely abstract in nature that even Nancy finds it silly to "fix a heating lamp this way". The way that the treasure is found; the ship being part of the setting and for logical historical reasons is wonderful and never feels contrived. And the music is amazing as always.

I also did not realize at the time that the game was set in Iceland, which I've always wanted to visit. It is quite beautiful and idk this game will probably be the closest thing to it for a long time.

Now all that's left is ND33 Midnight in Salem and I'll have "caught up" with this series once and for all!

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (PC)

Ittle Dew does it better. You'll wanna play this for the humor and it is decent. The gameplay is clunky but serviceable and its not that long anyways. What I didn't expect was the dark backstory. It was kinda interesting how the game is set in a post-apoc setting and humans are dead and nuked. You being sentient fruits and veggies are a result of toxic radiation. Also, I just realized it but the game crosses the line twice when you inadvertently kill a little girl with radiation, only to have to fight said girl as a boss. And kill her.

So yeah, this game was actually interesting in that the unfolding worldbuilding was pretty intriguing a take. However, after the above spoilered revelation, the game leaves it at that, focusing more on you and your attempts to evade taxes. Interesting secret boss though but I would really have loved exploring that backstory a bit more. Shame.

New Pokemon Snap (Switch)
Woops, it's been a while. Kinda went through a bit of a low point in my mental health over the past few months. A lot of games started but not completed. But I wasn't going to let May be the second month in a row in which I didn't beat a game and this felt like the quickest/easiest on to wrap up tonight, so here we are.

Wow, we really went 22 years without a sequel to the original. Was this one worth the wait? Eh. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece by any means. It kinda feels like it tried to be a lot more than it actually is. Like, adding a story to it. Or whatever semblance of a story that was. Why did it need a story? Why couldn't it have just been like the original where Oak kept sending Todd out on expeditions and occasionally have something specific he wanted him to see? There was way too much talking here. Every time there was extended dialogue, I just wanted them to shut the hell up so I could get back to taking pictures of Pokemon, especially since two of the characters were ungodly annoying. I will say that the one thing I did enjoy about the story was not only having Todd appear, but giving him a decent sized role instead of just a cameo. That was cool, made it feel like a real sequel, and overall a nice throwback for those of us who enjoyed the original.

The gameplay was super repetitive. Having to redo the same courses several times with minor (if any) differences gave me a headache and made me only able to play this in short bursts. I DO like the fact that you could save up to four different poses of each Pokemon instead of just one, but HERE'S MY GIGANTIC GRIPE WITH THAT. Why couldn't I show the professor, for example, both a * photo of Pikachu and a ** photo of Pikachu from the same run when I could save both? It didn't make sense and made me feel like I had to play each course even more times than I really needed to. I guess they wanted to artificially extend both the main story runtime and the replay value somehow? But that wasn't the way to do it. That was really annoying.

I liked the variety of Pokemon. It had a nice blend of eight generations, even if it was heavier on certain gens. For example, and not that I'm complaining about either of these things, but it felt a bit Gen II heavy, with Gens III and V kinda lacking. And maybe that's just what stood out to me, I could actually be way off. I haven't looked at the official count for each generation. Regardless, while there were definitely some notable omissions (Jigglypuff? Lucario? Starters? Legendaries?), it was fun discovering each new one and going "I KNOW HIM!"

The game looks beautiful. ESPECIALLY the water levels, my God I felt like I just wanted to go swimming afterwards. It's a lovely game. I do really like that they didn't add too many new features to interacting with Pokemon and the vehicle. They kept pretty much what the original had, with some minor tweaks. THAT BEING SAID, I was disappointed in the function of these things. In the original, it felt like you could really make the Pokemon do crazy things with the items you had. Like lead Pikachu to a certain area with a trail of apples, or get a Mankey and a Magikarp to interact, ultimately leading to Gyarados. That felt sorely, sorely lacking in this one, with Pokemon just eating the apples, or getting angry for getting hit by them. The Pokeflute seemed especially useless. I counted very few instances where that actually did much.

Overall, while I'm glad Pokemon Snap finally got a sequel, it was simultaneously more complex and yet more lacking than the original. I guess I'm glad I played it, but I probably won't be going back to experience any of the replay stuff, like completing the Photodex, anytime soon. If they ever make another, I really hope it's more like the first one. K.I.S.S. Keep it simple, stupid.

Marble Trap (PC)

Ever since I played Marble Madness for the Game Boy, I've always been fond of rolling games. Marble Trap has a sleek presentation, and excellent camera, and very smooth controls. It could use more obstacle variety, but that's really the only complaint that I have.

Heart Star (PC)

Neat little puzzle game using two characters, each with a specific color that can come into contact with platforms/obstacles/objects of the same color but will pass through those of the opposite color.

FRAMED (PC)

When I got a tablet for the first time in 2015, I bought several mobile games right away for it, and FRAMED was one of them. I never played the sequel, so I got the collection for PC awhile back and finally and decided to play the first one again. I still love the novel mechanics and the superb presentation/animation. The actual puzzles can be hit or miss, but they hit far more than they miss, and the misses aren't bad by any means.

As soon as you mentioned Marble Madness, I had to check it out.
It was on sale for 59 cents!

I had fun with it. I would have to agree with you on the obstacle variety. Everything else was pretty good!

Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth (Vita)

I kind of want to amend my top 100 list that I recently posted here, this is easily a top 10 game, maybe even top 5. Amazing story that wraps up the hanging plot threads from both of the other two games, and actually difficult strategy RPG battles (on Hard mode, which is what I've used through the entire series play through) that make the most use of the game's unique mechanics.

I'm still going to go through the Dream Arena at some point later but I really enjoyed my time in this series.

Storm Boy (PC)

I'm sure the source material, which I think is a children's book is lovely, but none of the apparently optional activities were any fun, and the story text was strangely implemented in you couldn't really move and read because the story is triggered by location, so I had to sit and stand to read and rinse/repeat the entire game.

Knightin+ (PC)

A mini dungeon-based action game. The action is serviceable, but the puzzles (even if limited in type) and dungeon design are what stand out here.

FRAMED 2 (PC)

It was definitely bolder and more varied in the puzzle design, though the execution could be better. It was also lacking relative to the original. It was still a very good game.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)

I've never actually beaten this game before. As a kid I could get to the last level, but I don't think I ever even got to Wart. The last level is tough, especially if you don't know all of its ins and outs.

Replayed via Mega Man Legacy Collection.
I grew to appreciate this entry over the years.
Flash Stopper is also one of the best Special Weapons of all time.

Evan's Remains (PS4)

Really cool puzzle game with a major narrative element that actually told an interesting story with some nice twists.

Donkey Kong Country Returns (3DS)
I got this game for free as an end-of-year gift from Club Nintendo, back when they actually had a cool rewards club. Incidentally, I got Tropical Freeze for free that way too (I think I picked it out as an end-of-ever gift). I actually did most of this playthrough back in 2015, but got stuck on World 7, unable to find any of the secret switches. I finally went back to wrap it up (using a guide to find what I missed).

I'm gonna spoiler tag the rest of this because honestly, I hate to be a killjoy in here and some of this gets really self-loathing, but it's how I feel. Get ready for it.

I hated playing this game. And it's not the game's fault. It seemed fun. It was my own fault. I'm just a terrible gamer and couldn't play this game to save my life. There were stages that I spent literal hours on. There were levels that took me several hundred tries and on my life I am not even exaggerating that. There were levels that I died on well over 100 times before even seeing the first checkpoint. The worst were 8-3, and the final boss, the latter of which was particularly frustrating because once you even make it to him (which, even once I was 100% familiar with the course I still only did like 1 in 5 tries), I had to one-shot him because once you die to him once they're no way to get Diddy back without doing the whole course over again and I found fighting him with solo DK to be even more futile than playing Smash Bros. with a solo Popo. To make matters worse, when you fail so much you get that stupid option for Super Kong ringing in your ear every time you die (this kind of option is something I refuse to do in any game ever no matter how many times I fail), just to remind you how much you suck. I had multiple complete breakdowns over this game, and I wish I were kidding about that. I'm not. Over fucking Donkey Kong. The only reason I finished it is because I didn't think I had that long to go with only a world and a half left, and once I had sunk at least a dozen more hours in at that point, I forced myself to stick to it and it was painful as fuck, because it made me feel unbelievably awful about myself. I honestly have no idea how I'm so bad at video games considering how much I play them, but it's pretty similar to almost everything in my life. I never get good at anything no matter how much I try. This game has really made me feel like a failure. I don't feel accomplished having beaten this game. I don't feel proud. I in fact feel embarrassed as fuck. I feel like the last horse limping across the finish line as the crowd painfully cheers out of nothing but sympathy. I feel absolutely pathetic. I feel like I did the absolute fucking bare-ass minimum of what a nine-year-old could have done in a quarter of the time. It seemed like a really fun platformer, but the experience was totally ruined for me. Obviously I'm not exactly frothing at the mouth to play Tropical Freeze or any other DKC games anytime soon, if ever, because I just don't want to put myself through that personal torture again. I'm sure this post seems overdramatic as fuck but it's really how I feel. For the past few months, I've just been feeling like I'm an absolute failure who just sucks at everything, and this game did nothing but reinforce that feeling.
