Mega Man Zero 3 (Switch)

Ohhh yes. First time I've ever played Zero 3 and it's easily the best one so far. I was actually interested in a Mega Man story here, the Cyber Elf system is much more forgiving, plenty of unique stages that also tie in great with the story and it's also the longest MMZ game yet. I feel like this is basically a perfect Mega Man title. Bosses were fun as well (final bosses were really cool compared to MMZ2) although I felt some weren't balanced that well and their attack animations were too quick to read them and learn a pattern. Nevertheless, best MMZ yet. Now unto MMZ4!

Mega Man Zero 4 (Switch)

And that completes the Zero series! This one is probably my least favourite, even though it's better than 1. Stage design was often fairly dull or repetitive. Bosses were interesting, and more complex, but also slower to fight and a mixed bag in terms of difficulty (some extremely easy, others unforgiving with some of their attacks patterns or abilities). This one felt more like an X game in many ways. The trailers were a very lame base and I didn't enjoy the story in this one either. Oh well, it's still solid. Overall I think I enjoyed it 3>2>1>4, but quality-wise it's probably more like 3>2>4>1 (and even 4>2 wouldn't be a weird choice). Now I have ZX and ZX Advent left, and I have beaten and enjoyed ZX before.

I still remember playing MMZ4 and being very sad when I found out that was the last game in the series. Like in MMBN6.

The Shapeshifting Detective (PS4)

There are some unskippable, repetitive stuff that wears thin quickly that is exacerbated by aimlessness in the investigation due to its linear progression. However, this was more interesting than the other FMV game that I've played (Late Shift).

Luigi's Mansion 3

This was pretty great. Never played Dark Moon, but this was certainly a huge step up from the original. Love the creativity of every floor and the wildly differing bosses. Those actually got pretty challenging later on (I never bought the gold bone power-ups because I wanted as much cash as possible by the end). Ended up with just over 100k - I took my time and collected all the gems and every Boo and everything. Shame there isn't a better reward for getting an A rank, but that's not too big of a complaint.

Today I started The Messenger on Game Pass and hot damn this game is already top tier. The writing has made me laugh out loud a ton too.

Star Wars: Republic Commando (XBO(X)

This game is a fun enough time. The guns feel pretty good, and there's enough of a challenge that creates a tension and fits with the universe. Jedi's had it "easy" against droids, clones less so. The tactical system works but isn't super in-depth; mostly it's just assigning areas as you see them, with the occasional fight where you have to figure out which position is the best.

The game only has three missions so it's pretty short overall, but the missions themselves do go on for quite a while, again giving a good tension to the action as you're never sure when you're in the clear. The story is really just a vehicle for the action, the graphics look better than I expected and the sound is Star Wars.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4)

Never played a Tomb Raider game before but I have the most recent reboot trilogy so decided to give it a try. I liked it for the most part, gameplay was fun and the story was ok. Not a huge fan of the supernatural aspect though.

By far the worst part about the game was the camera though. It was so shaky that it made me nauseous.

Polyroll (Switch)

You play as Polyroll, a pill bug that has to rescue his friends from the evil Kaiser Kiwi.

This game is heavily inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog. It focuses more on the platforming than the speed. It has a couple of unique mechanics of it's own that it can stand on it's own feet, like the wall jump mechanic after you do a spin dash towards a wall and a few of the power ups.

Graphics are nice and colorful. Boss fights were also fun. Game controlled well.
I enjoyed it and recommend it.

Octopath Traveler (Switch)

Finally finished this one. Or at least, I consider it finished. Technically, I haven't beaten Galdera or the boss rush before it, but I know what it's about and I have reached the dungeon at least. That part of the story doesn't seem overly exciting anyway, and it's just way too tedious to do it without being able to save anywhere in between. So I'm calling it quits on this game. It was mostly a great game with some charming stories and a very enjoyable battle system. Very chill game to play, for some reason. That being said, I did think it was inconsistent in how interesting it stayed here and there, not helped by the fact that it's on the long side as well. The part after all 8 characters' fourth chapters is not done well imo. Overall, charming is the word I'd use to describe this game, and I'm happy I've experienced it, but I don't think it's a must-play. The music and art style are phenomenal though.

Greedfall (PC)

Ugh, from one B-List game to another. Well on the plus side, this was a vacation compared to Nioh. On the other, it was like a clunky Bioware RPG clone. I actually want to go back to Mass Effect (which I dropped because it bore me) because of this game which is a damn shame.

Amazing universe and setting. Intriguing politics. But mediocre everything else. Mainly, it is the insane amounts of backtracking in this game and for what: Talking to people. Useless padding like you wouldn't believe. I had to employ a speedhack just to survive but it got real boring even after I was running around like The Flash.

At least most generic RPGs had you get 20 bear butts or fight some bandits or *something* to accompany to unique parts of the game (looking at you Witcher 1). But in Greedfall, the sidequests consist of running around talking to people who can't be bothered to talk to each other themselves. And they're not even exciting! One mission had me dealing with land rights. This is how the quest flowed:

  • Talk to people in the land
  • Run back to the city, ask the Advisor (4 flights of stairs btw) for advice.
  • Run down to the archives to get the deed (its in the basement, so thats 5 flights down)
  • Run back out and talk to the previous governor to decipher the deed (1 flight up and around the block outside)
  • Run back to the Advisor (4 flights again) to come to a legal decision.
  • Run back to the land and talk to the people.

And then the game has you do it AGAIN. All of that above, AGAIN. For another dispute concerning the land. It's ridiculous. Were I not a completionist who wanted those sweet EXPs I wouldn't have bothered. Nioh was tedious for being overwrought. This piece of shit was tedious for being the exact opposite. Its droll, lifeless, mundane in its execution. It feels like an awesome looking MMO but after you walk around you realize that everyone is just a static NPC and the quests don't have you doing anything epic.

Avoid.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)

Both of these are pretty good. 3D World's actual platforming mechanics feel kind of loose, and my solution to that was to play as Peach most of the time because her float lets you jump so much more precisely, but she's so broken that it's not really a good solution. I unlocked the really, truly final world but haven't beaten it yet, and I'm almost definitely not going to beat every level with every character, so 100% is probably out.

Bowser's Fury I think I liked more even though it's much shorter. Fewer bottomless pits and a bigger reserve of power-ups compared to the main game make the platforming feel a lot tighter even though it actually isn't. I might try to 100% this one. Also the aesthetics are a lot better here! I long to live in a world where everything is cats.

And all trophies. What a fun tech demo. It's very cute and really shows off the controller. But it's a tech demo, about 16 levels long, which you can run through in a minute or two each if not searching for collectables. It's also the most Nintendo thing not made by Nintendo in recent memory.

Mega Man ZX (Switch)

I had already played and beaten this on DS before, but now also as part of the Zero/ZX collection. It definitely brought back memories as it was the first Mega Man game I bought for myself (before that I used to play my brother's Mega Man 4 on NES over and over, but that was the only one he had), and it's fun. I was, however, less tolerant of its sort of Metroidvania-like structure this time around. I like that genre a lot, but in a Mega Man game it felt a bit like a pace killer. Also, getting level 4 victories over some of the Pseudodroids was rather unforgiving as it's almost impossible to not hit the biometal and two of the subtanks were locked behind stupid design (one by doing the same uninteresting subquests multiple times in repeated trips through the rather slow Area L, and the one in Area K that you'd probably never really figure out without looking it up as it's behind a series of actions at certain moments in the level in a room with a constant death trap).

So in hindsight, not my favorite of this collection, but I still love the nostalgia I feel for it. Now only ZX Advent awaits (one I've never played outside of the first level or something), but I'm not sure how much I'm going to like that one.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury (Switch)

Now I've beaten every single 3D Mario game! I didn't do 3D World's post game worlds yet (I did get every green star, stamp and golden flag pole in the main worlds), and I beat BF but have 70/100 Cat Shines (I did play on and get more Shines after the "story" though, when I had 50). However, I consider both to be mostly content to play when I feel like it and classify it as "beaten" to move on to different games.

Overall, tons of fun and charm again. 3D World was great, but not my favorite 3D Mario game. I thought it would be more creative than I felt it really was, because I felt like most ideas were already in Galaxy and 3D Land. Sometimes the way you move around in the game + the camera made it easy to make annoying jumping mistakes (I agree with complaints about depth perception here) and it felt a little uncomfortable at times compared to some of the other games. Still, super colorful, fun to play, solid controls most of the time and plenty of good levels.

Bowser's Fury was quite nice, I have to say. I tought it would be an afterthought, and in the end it is very short and simple, but this could be worked out into something amazing. Very addictive, and this does feel like what an open world Mario game would be like; basically one big Mario playground. All kinds of Mario's staple elements combined in one big area to play in. In BF I still found a lot of it to feel too segmented to really feel open world, but it's a great concept. It was really fun and I beat it in one sitting (and got 20 more shines afterwards).

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (3DS)

I post so much here lol, thanks to all these short games. This is a game from my backlog I played because I let a random number generator decide and this one came out of it. Fortunately, it's a game easily beaten in less than two hours, which is what I did. I have played this in the past, a long time ago, but I hadn't beaten it on my 3DS before now. I had one golden coin when I stopped last time, so I finished up the rest. I love how weird this game is, and while it's very slow, it controls remarkably well. It's certainly very easy and the level design almost feels like it's from a fangame, but I do like the weird themes and the fact that levels have so many paths to choose, even thought it matters little outside of maybe a few coins, an extra life or a powerup. Nice, nostalgic "trip" (if you catch my drift).

Mass Effect (PC)

I thought I was kidding myself but I actually did it. Went back and played this all over again after being so reminded of it playing Greedfall. I remember everything about this game and how terrible its mechanics were, but forgot that once upon a time the worldbuilding and setting were solid and it still held up. I even forgot that at least one party member had to die and I had to deal with that shit.

Its so strange now to see where Bioware is and has become. I wouldn't really feel their arrogance I suppose until Game 3. I originally gave up on ME2 because I hated how it just became a shooter and the RPG mechanics took a backseat. But this game was broken as a shooter as well so ehhh. Maybe this time I'll power through the 2nd game for real.

Nifty open-world puzzle/platformer with excellent pacing. The camera not being fully controllable was an issue that I had with two puzzles, but that's really all the trouble the game gave me (well, an optional arcade game had an absurdly small margin for error).

Mass Effect 2 (PC)

Well here it is, I did it. I honestly don't remember most of it when I abandoned it halfway ages ago. I recall being very bored with it; just talking and shooting and excuses to do both. I recall it being very limited in comparison to the first even thought they improved the mechanics. But I think I figured out why I hate this one.

It's not so much the missions themselves being repetitive and some of the 12 you get on board aren't very exciting (actually most are droll at best, but nothing I didn't particularly hate, owing it to the lore and worldbuilding and voice-acting). It's more of, when you get down to it this game is just about getting 12 people and doing 12 things with them then 4 more missions of payback and some DLC icing. I get that this game tropified loyalty missions, but JRPGs were doing character-centric development way before ME2 was. It's interesting to have to explore each character to make them feel more real and immersive, but not when it's a game mechanic in itself. FF6 is a better ME2.

That said, experience was so-so. I didn't feel utterly tedious until the last few side quests so its great in that regard I guess.

EDIT: That said, I just wanna talk about something unrelated for a second. Jojo Part 8.

ME2 reminds me of Jojo Part 8 because when it comes down to it, Jojo Part 8 is a Mystery manga with Stands. Like, the entire thing could've been great but the Stands and bizarre fights feel tacked on simply because "its Jojo". Most of the battles have little to no payoff either because it was a misunderstanding or the bad guy wins anyway. And most of the battles are less "Shounen" for the lack of a better term. My theory is simply that Araki's signature is trying to mature and its not doing a good job because its holding on to the past.

I don't think every fight was lame btw. The Snail fight was an interesting cerebral experience, that could only work in Part 8 because its stands are really less fighty and more sleuthy.

If Araki wanted to do a great Mystery manga, then he should've just nixed the Stands. The story alone is honestly worth it. Or, if it was inevitable, he should've put Stands and fights into the wayside. Or. He should've done the complete opposite and gone full tilt, sacrificing a bit of sleuthing for bizzareness. My most hated example right now is that Stand who is basically the Internet. All that stand does is act like a GPS but it does nothing in fights that might perhaps need the use of an on-the-spot forensics observation or a googling of someone's personal life, likes, dislikes, habits. It doesn't go beyond anything more than "this stand just tells me where to go by 'coincidence'" and I feel like every stand is like this. Wasted potential.

Another example is our main man Josuke who the only thing he seems to steal that aren't physical objects is "friction" and "sound". The Josuke from Part 4 was way more interesting by comparison.

Cuphead (PC)

What a treat this was. I don't really think there's much I can say about the game that most don't already know. It's stylish, creative, challenging, and tons of fun. The only thing I didn't enjoy was Rumor Honeybottoms. She walled me hard, and I swear sometimes I got stuck in a no-win situation through no real fault of my own just due to all of the randomness. Everything else was a pure delight.

Werner Werman, Brineybeard, Wally Warbles, Cala Maria, and the Devil probably make up my top 5 favorite bosses in some order or another. I imagine I'll likely go back every so often and see about bumping up some of my ranks and grabbing a couple extra achievements, but I probably won't make it a priority just because there's so many other games to get to!

Really cute game! I played through the first three chapters with hard mode on, but I kinda got sick of thinking so hard. Although, I ended up stomping everything near the end of the game once I had a decent amount of medal points.

Played this because of similarities to PM1 and TTYD. This definitely scratched that long-held itch of mine (PM1 is my favorite game of all time). I wouldn't put Bug Fables in the same tier as those two, but it was definitely close enough while being its own thing.

Make no mistake that unlike Prelude to the Fallen, this game starts off extremely slow with little to no plot development. Plus a lot of the game is merely setup for the sequel and not really setting itself apart. However, it's quite the ride to get there, so I'm glad I played and beat it.

Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers (PC/NES)

Replayed via Disney Afternoon Collection on PC. I remote played this with one of my friends. I was Chip and he was Dale. It was my first time beating the game with someone via co-op. Was a nice experience.

Super Skelemania (Switch)

This game set out what it did in it's description. A single sitting Metroidvania. It was pretty fun.
It is said once you know your way around this game, it can be beaten in under 18 minutes.

CrunchTime (Switch)

It told a strange story on how Crunch Time is at a work place. You play as a green pixel character as you run, jump, shoot and air dash your way through a computer world fighting creatures made out of ASCII.

DuckTales (PC/NES)

Replayed via Disney Afternoon Collection. Classic game.

Lament (PC)

You play as an anthromorphic wolf with a buster sword. Game is said to be inspired by Castlevania/Ninja Gaiden. You can play any of the stages in any order. The knockback is ridiculous in this game. Imagine the knockback in Castlevania/Ninja Gaiden and turn it up to 10. I still had some fun with the game. It was rather short and the ending left me confused and go "...what?". Not in a good way though.

Darkwing Duck (PC/NES)

Replayed via Disney Afternoon Collection. I always felt the biggest ball dropped in this game was a severe lack of Nega Duck as a boss, not to mention using a D-Lister villain like Wolf Duck instead of someone like say Tuskernini or even Taurus Bulba. Ah well, still a good game. Arrow Gun is the best sub weapon and all you really need.

Mighty Gunvolt (PC)

Replayed. Last time I played this was on my 2DS XL years ago. It's a fun short game. Beat it with Gunvolt.

Moon Raider (Switch)

You play as a martian girl that has to cure her mother from a sickness.
This game was...average. It's not a bad game really. It's merely ok. It's just that you can play much better action/platformer games out there. One thing I did like about the game is the Screw Attack ability which you can fly around with.

Mega Man and Mega Man 2 (Switch/NES)

Replayed via the Mega Man Legacy Collection.
First game is good and the one that started it all. Mega Man 2 is where they really strap the proverbial rocket on this game's back and propelled Mega Man to what it is today.

One Person Story (Switch)
This was a neat little puzzle game where you guide a ball upwards as the game narrates stuff about life, obstacles, friendship, pain and hope. It really stuck with me and I couldn't put it down when I started the game up and beat it in a single setting through it's 100 levels. I guess the message the game told me of never giving up got to me a little, heh.

Wreckfest (XB1)

The game is at its best when it goes into the chaotic and/or the silly stuff like destruction racing on courses with figure eights/loops, destruction derbies with school buses and lawn mowers, and things of that nature. It struggles though when it tries to do more standard fare though with bland course design and an unimpressive array of vehicles. Later championship series also have you do races with eight and even 12 laps, which is just overkill. Still, it's a great game because it really soars when it wants to.

This game owns. It's like Hotline Miami but different, providing you with an almost limitless arsenal of disposable weapons to pick up off the ground, challenging you to optimize your route and never stop moving.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (PS4)

I have been obsessed with this game the past week or two. It's just insane. I didn't care for it the first time I tried it, as I was hoping for another Ace Attorney and it really isn't that similar in most ways. It's really out there, quite ridiculous and is fairly slow initially. And then you just get into it and it unravels and you ride it out at max speed without noticing. I think the gameplay actually isn't great, the "cases" are exposed to you without having to think much and many characters are quite extreme and stereotypical. And yet, this game just completely absorbed me. The mysterious setting, being stuck with a small group of (admittedly silly) people, the incredible music and just the ridiculously dark atmosphere were just so mesmerising I was glued to the screen. In the end I just didn't care about faults, imperfections, logical fallacies or exposition. For the hours spent playing this, the real world stopped existing for a while. I absolutely loved it, it's not a 10/10 game, but easily my favourite game of the year so far.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4)

I've never played the original Final Fantasy VII, so this was my first foray into it. Pretty good! Obviously it feels very incomplete with tons of unresolved plot lines, but the combat and visuals were insanely good, and the characters were pretty good too.

I give it an 8/10 and I look forward to playing the rest of the complete remake when that finally happens. Also, I'll probably go play the original soon.

Almost forgot this one:

Katamari Damacy REROLL (PC)

It's still awesome. Katamari Damacy will never lose its charm, and despite how silly and simple the game is, it's very fun to play through again.

Dragon Age Inquisition (XB1)

This is clearly the best Dragon Age game as I can't imagine going back to such inferior gameplay and environments, and the characters and voice acting are improved, but man am I exhausted, and I haven't touched Trespasser yet.

I loved DAI on my first playthrough until I unlocked the post-Skyhold areas and started going through them and realized that every sidequest was just checking off checkmarks rather than sidestories about the world and the people in it. I love the Inquisition cast but man playing the game always feels a bit like a turnoff. Trespasser is great though.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy (XBO(X)

Surprised I never really heard about this before. It's a nice Zelda-lite experience. Positively I would say the puzzle-solving is quite fun; none of the puzzles feel really hard or obtuse but they're challenging enough and especially the Mummy ones can get pretty creative. The platforming feels okay and there's a variety of systems and minigames and things to collect if you wanna take a break from the game for a while. All the enemies and the bosses in this game are annoying. That could be a downside, but I actually like that mobs aren't just all the same or palette-swaps or completely ineffective at all times. Technically the game also looks better than I suspected it would, but I know that the Xbox One ups the XBOX Classics games so that probably has something to do with it.

On the downside, the combat is a bit lackluster. There's basically a normal slash, a spin slash, a jump slash and a ground pound. Aside from the spin and the jump, none of these really change the combat around. You get a blowpipe but it's mostly used for puzzle-solving. You also get a shield which you basically use once to deflect a laser and that's about it. There are some enemies which have ranged attacks, but as you can't move with the shield up, it's kinda pointless. The other system that just feels underdeveloped is the monster capture system. You can capture all the monsters in this game to give them to a museum, give them to some collector, sell them to a shop or use them in puzzles/sidequests. Unfortunately, there are only two monsters that get used this way. It feels like a system they started on, then discovered was too much work to plan and implement and then just kinda gave up. There's a lot of things that kinda feel this way in the game. You get Bouncing and Ice Darts for the blowpipe, but they're basically used for one puzzle and then never again. The OST is also pretty disappointing. It's not bad, but it is very unremarkable and my favourite track was probably the menu theme, but you barely have to open your menu so that makes it even worse.

Overall it is an enjoyable experience and one I would've been interested in to see if they would have improved for the sequel, but it was never made.

Basically Morrowind without combat. It's a good thing that the world is relatively compact and distinctive because man what is it with games that I've played lately and inadequate map systems.

Final Fight 2 (SNES)

This is the one I grew up on and now I see why nobody remembers this. While it was easier than the insane first game, it was too simple. I realize now playing oldschool beatemups that all enemies have a certain pattern to them and getting it down given the right combination was how you're suppose to play these things. Anyways the enemies were boring here. Probably just the 1 or 2 types stood out and the rest were just hardy at best.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (DS)

Finally, after 10 years of owning this game, I finally beat it, including the extra chapter. That part wasn't as long or difficult as I expected it to be, so it was fine even though it doesn't change much. Overall, really nice Dragon Quest title, charming and classic as always and very impressive considering this was originally on the NES. Some of it is a little archaic, but in general its aged roots are disguised pretty well in this version. Whack and some RNG stuff can just bugger off though. A nice, if simple, story, plenty to explore, some interesting bosses and especially a pretty epic final boss (talking about Psaro here, not Aamon). Not a real standout game anymore these days, but it was a very solid and relaxing jrpg.
