My Memory of Us (PC)

A nice on-rails puzzle/adventure game that took me until the very end to realize that Patrick Stewart was the narrator.

Blaster Master Zero 3 (PC)

Hmmm kinda forgettable. Felt shorter (despite my playtime, half of it is idle imo) than the previous two and also less areas, bosses etc
I dunno it felt like the game was made just to finish the story and that's it
Well the story was like the rest of the series, kinda nonsense bullshit, but the ending was satisfying I guess
And still it's a Inti Creates game so it was fun anyway

Kinda 6/10ish

Short Shark! Shark!-like but creepier. I actually played it twice expecting multiple endings but I don't think there are, at least based on the achievement list. Fine for a free game.

Don't Die, Mr. Robot! (PS4)

This was a free game at some point, and I downloaded it just to see what it is. I ended up playing it all the way through. It's a silly little bullet hell like game, where you control a little avatar and try to dodge enemies as long as possible. The stages have items you can pick up to create small explosions that clear enemies away. There's really not much to it, except that there are 50 challenges that can be played for trophies. Each one has a unique constraint or goal. It did not take very long to do them all, and most of them were enjoyable. There is a significant amount of luck for some of them, and one in particular required incredible precision while also being very luck-based and that one took my maybe as long as most of the others combined.

It was fun for being free, a very simple game. I think it was a VITA game which makes sense.

WarioWare: Get It Together! (Nintendo Switch)
It's a WarioWare game with a different gimmick, this time not based on hardware. It serves well to amplify the chaos, even if it sometimes feels like you rolled a particularly bad disadvantage. I think the campaign of any game in the series is beatable in one sitting so I'm not alarmed about that. We'll just see if it holds up with the rest of the content.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair (PS4)

I had my reservations after the first few levels that I played, but the further I played, the more I came to appreciate and like it. I'm still iffy on the titular level (I do feel a little proud that completing it on my 12th try might be better than the norm), and I feel like the tonics were slightly on the pointless side.

I forgot that I beat Psychonauts 2 (PC) a day before Avernum 1. Its a good game that made some minor qol improvements however. It was essentially more of the same down to the scavenger hunt that happens early game and even the flow which was by lategame you were whisked away to a completely separate area to just keep playing a set of levels with no chance of moving back until the finale. I just wanna say that this sequel's way of improving that problem by making the game an open world exploration game when everything is over, is like a patchwork solution. Obviously when I'm done with something like Psychonauts, I'm not gonna keep playing for long. There's nothing at stake anymore. Just give me my damn backtrack mechanic, game!

The plot was fine and it managed to resolve some unanswered questions but a couple of plotlines were dropped and some things just didn't make sense if you think about it hard enough.

My main gripe though is the brainworlds. Raz was basically playing psychoanalyst and fixing people's problems and so the worlds were more realistic for the lack of a better term. I like the hint of consent that came with each one though, but for me Psychonauts was always about the wackiness of each brainworld instead of literally fixing people's problems. I feel like the actions you do trivialize actual mental help irl. Idk. I want my napoleon boardgameworld is all. I want my velvet matadorworld. I don't care about mucking around an Overcooked parody fighting puking hand puppets or sailing around wind waker jr while listening to an abusive drunk's problems.

And today I beat Terminator: Resistance (PC) an example of a true 30 USD game that makes no attempts to be a 60 USD game like most. For an FPS made in 2019, its pretty decent. It tries to incorporate some mechanics we've seen before, mainly Fallout stuff but its hit and miss. Instead it shines in the little details of game design and my god you actually fight terminators in this game (and you struggle so much very early on). You also get to meet John Connor and save the damn timeline without any sort of sequel hook. Its a C+ kind of game that you rarely see now when a game either has to perform really well or suck forever. It feels like it came out in 2010 and has no business existing today but its here and it's alright.

Death's Door (PC)

In the shitty E3 that we had this year, there were just a few games I was interested in. This is one of them. So I knew I would play this at some point.
It's a very nice indie game. Great atmosphere, combat is super fluid and fantastic, great level design, puzzles and bosses. Story is whatever. Feels like a faster 2D Zelda
Too bad it isn't more popular, but I guess being Microsoft exclusive is to blame. I expect it to explode in popularity when (and if..) it comes to the Nintendo Switch
Main negative point is that it lacks a map design so trying to 100% guideless is a pain in the ass and in the end I gave up and used a guide

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie (PC/Genesis)

Replayed via Sega Genesis Classics via Steam and played it online with a friend this time around.
This game respected the source material sooo much. Right down to the music lifted from the show and the sound effects.

Unlike the SNES version which doesn't even follow the plot of the movie at all and it being a different game altogether (it's still an ok game, really), this version blows it out of the water with the overall presentation. You get to even switch Rangers between each level if you want to mix it up and it has Zord battles as well. It even has a secret battle with Lord Zedd.

Easily a Top 10 Genesis Beat Em' Up and I highly recommend it.

Deltarune: Chapter 2

I liked every single second/minute of it.

Death's Door (PC)

Didn't know what to really expect going into it, just heard them talk about it on MinnMax one day and daggum it's a pretty great game.

Kind of like Nanis said, the lack of map is the only thing I really dislike, but honestly after going through a zone I had the areas down pretty well on how to find stuff. Not sure if I'll hit 100%, but gonna try. Currently at 94.8%, but the rest requires collecting & planting all the seeds and that sounds like hell

Ghost of Tsushima (PS4)

Definitely enjoyed the story all the way throughout, puts a little too much into its checklist hunt as many open world games do. It ran pretty well on the PS4 than most recent AAA games (still has the PS4 sound like a jet engine though). I'll definitely get the platinum, and probably do the DLC at a later date.

Streets of Rage 3 (PC/Genesis)

Replayed via Sega Genesis Collection on Steam while playing with a friend online.
We opted to play with a mod called The Bare Knuckle 3 Project. It's basically the Japanese version with the true difficulty settings that got messed up in the American version, the story translated, and all the hidden characters unlocked (Roo, Shiva, Ash) at the character select screen. The mod even has a playable Max and Adam. But we didn't get too crazy with that.

I was Blaze and my friend picked Dr. Zan. Got the best ending.

Akane (PC)

Replayed. I played this on the Switch last year.
Unlocked all the gear and got the final scene.
Still one of my favorite arcade style games to come back to.

Mega Man X3 (PC/SNES)

Replayed via Mega Man X Legacy Collection.
Game is ok...but having played this game recently made me realized it's the worst of the SNES X trilogy. They amped up the difficulty when starting out, but gets easier with upgrades. Charged Up X Buster Shots are not as strong as they are supposed to be like in X1 and X2. You're better off using rapid fire shots or the other Special Weapons to dispatch most enemies. Bosses get looped easily when using the special weapons. The large majority of the bosses even have a lot of the exact same attack patterns. X Buster Upgrade is also very underwhelming and awkward to use...

I do like finding the secrets every time I play. Most of the secrets are hidden in clever spots. Always a fun thing to do like in every X game before it.

Ikenfell (XB1)

I really got into the battle system experiementing with all sorts of character and spell combos. Battles were prone to turning into slogs, so while it did put a damper on it, I still really enjoyed battling as a whole. The rest of the package was mostly fine, though I was most disappointed in the world. Part of that was my own incorrect assumption that the game was a school RPG and not an RPG that happened to take place within what is a school. Because the game takes place in a mostly deserted school, it never really gets a chance to shine, and there wasn't much to do in terms of exploration. Ultimately, my feelings toward the game lean positive, but there was definitely some missed potential.

Level 22 (Vita)

A stealth game with an office setting, it tasks you with sneaking all the way up to your office without being spotted, using items such as donuts, cardboard boxes, coffee, and others to sneak past the workers on each floor. Got it on PS+ a while back, used a few of its trophies for a TrueTrophies challenge, and finished it up today. It works for what it is.

Hedon: Bloodrite (PC)

First off, this dev made Episode 2 which in itself might as well be an entirely new game, free if you bought the first Hedon. He could've easily sold it as its own thing and didn't. Kudos.

That out of the way, I was so pumped for this one that I actually in rare form went back and played Episode 1 because unlike other retro shooters this game actually had a plot and lore that I had pretty much forgotten when I beat it March this year. I honestly didn't expect Episode 2 to drop anytime soon but when I heard it did I dropped everything to beat it. The lore and plot continues here and much heavier this time. I love it. And there are hints for an Episode 3 but this time the dev has taken a real hiatus towards the series which is honestly well-deserved.

That said, is it a good game? Well. First I'd like to say that episode 1 was basically the dev finding his style. It had some DOOM and Quake going for it and that was great. Probably my favorite thing is that the weapons just feel so right and none of them ever feel obsolete. This is also an FPS with an amazing shotgun AND a flamethrower that actually works AND they're even the same gun! Episode 2 on the other hand is the dev clearly flexing his map-making and scripting muscles. Everything is bigger better and more impactful. New weapons, new enemies, new rockin' soundtracks.

Now I expected Episode 2 to be bigger in scale but more of the same. And herein lies the rub: It's Hexen. Hub Worlds. Multiple maps per map. Secrets relying on previously unlocked secrets. Inventory puzzles. Puzzles. Its not as confusing as Hexen thank god but, clearing a room then having to occasionally consult a guide for an item I might've missed or a piece of the puzzle that I did out of order severely throws the flow out of whack once in awhile. And there's 2 of them: 2 Hub Worlds with 3-4 levels each. I just want to kill some demons!

Also, unlike other Retro FPS', this game actually gives you a plethora of items to use and in fact they are necessary even on normal mode. I shudder to think how speedrunners even deal with hard its insane. I also feel contemptuous towards its boss fights which not only feel like something out of Serious Sam (which is fine if you weren't so brittle and half the enemy roster move faster than you AND shoot projectiles), but also have their own gimmicks. The final boss without spoiling has 5 fucking phases with little to no healing parts in between. Come on. That was just unfair.

In the end, I think I preferred Episode 1 but that's only because I really find the Hexen style of play to be a bit annoying so ymmv. I did appreciate the story and lore though and I hope Episode 3 comes soon when the dev feels like it.

Battletech (2018)

This game took me a long time to finish, especially since each mission you play can take a significant chunk of time. Often I just felt like it'd take too long to get anything done so I'd leave it to the side for days. When I was playing it, though, it was amazingly good. The mechanics are very solid (though they should be since they're based off a tabletop game that's been around since the 80s) and really what kept me coming back. For as long as some of the missions could be, they were quite short is comparison to actually playing Battletech since the computer takes care of so much for you. Great strategy game, well worth the time.

The House in Fata Morgana (Vita)

It is one of the best stories I've seen in a visual novel, and definitely recommended to play through all the way to the end. This version has a large amount of extra content in addition to the main story that I still have to go through, so I'll hold off on giving it a final rating until I've gone through all of that. Regardless, I am very impressed with the game and it definitely lives up to the hype I've seen for it.

Pokemon Black Version 2 (NDS)

An affirmation of Gen V being the best generation for Pokemon games. It's kinda funny how this game essentially balances out Black and White; while those games shined in story (for a Pokemon game), this one feels like it doesn't really have a story at all. All the story beats feel kinda shoehorned in and most of the plot happens at the end, and is also over before you know it.

Not that it's too much of a problem though, because gameplay-wise this might well be the peak of Pokmon. It's got a phenomenal spread of Pokemon; I enjoyed Black and White's pure Gen V dex, but it's always more fun when you just have access to all of the Pokemon and this game just delivers in that aspect. Every route, every patch of grass probably has a 'mon that makes you go "Ooh, I want to try that on my team!". One of the earliest areas in the game gives you access to Psyduck, Mareep, and Riolu among others. That's three cool Pokemon (lines) from three different gens.

One of the problems I had with OG Gen V was that the new gameplay mechanics it introduced were underutilized or even completely unknowable. While it doesn't go crazy with it, Black 2 features more Triple and Rotation battles, which just creates a nice surprise and challenge (as opposed to double battles, which were always a bit obvious). Hidden Abilities are also easier to get in contact with, as the Hidden Grottoes can offer up Pokemon that always have their Hidden Ability.

But especially the battles feel like a real step-up. Whereas other gens feel like they're afraid to give you trainers past mid-30's, the levels in this game ramp up well. It never really feels like you're under- or overleveled, which is a great change of pace from most Pokemon games where one or the other inevitably happens. It gives a nice challenge, even for normal battles, which is rare for a Pokemon game.

Technically, I actually love the look of Gen V. There's also some absolutely lush tracks in this game; Gen IV is still the best Pokemon OST, but Lacunosa Town is a top-theme in any Pokemon game.

Final team:
Samurott (Roronoa) Lvl. 59
Genesect Lvl. 60
Keldeo Lvl. 60
Kabutops (Zeiss) Lvl. 59
Escavalier (Lancelot) Lvl. 56

Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse (PC)

I went through the first three games (I was told to avoid the fourth) all within the past five years, and I quickly became a fan of the series. On one hand, it has the best animation in the series, returning to its origins but with modern advances in tech, and character movements actually look natural and in line with the environments instead of being awkward looking with dissonance.

On the other hand, what begins as an intriuging murder mystery with the series' supernatural/mystical elements as an undercurrent, ultimately becomes underwhelming in the final third of the game. Lack of interesting secondary characters certainly played a role, but unlike the rest of the games that I have played the supernatural threat never seemed dire or even real. They were at the forefront and genuine in the previous games, but at the very end, I was far from convinced there was any real danger from anything but the maniacs pursing these legends.

2 > 1 > 3 > 4 might be my ranking

The Lost Crown (PC)

After finishing The Dark Fall trilogy as well as the Barrow Hill games, this was my next stop. I wish I didn't save it for last, or maybe I was glad to because my god this game is soooooooo slow. Only one game comes close to this slowness and that is Syberia. I hated that game and I want to hate this but. It is admittedly a good mystery when the mystery is happening. Of course this is also an adventure game and so it has to have alot of adventure game shenanigans. Events that trigger only when you talk to someone. Items that aren't pickable until that trigger comes. Mindless backtracking and pixel hunting. All standard fair for a game like this to have come out back then but the most unforgivable aspect for me is the inability to skip dialog even on repeats. The scenery is great but you'll be backtracking and revisiting most of them and thank god teleportation to already visited areas exist but the pacing is still very deliberate.

I put this game in AGES ago and I don't even remember half the plot each time I resume it. There's wayy too much exposition going on and I mean I can appreciate when a game is trying to settle you in and breathe life into a town with all its mysteries and secrets. But this is just way too deliberate for my tastes. Syberia had its pointless screens and slowly animated puzzles and at least this game has depth going for it as well as the true slow burning horror that creeps into you and unsettles with nothing but sounds and ambiance, very rarely relying on jump scare tactics.

I think I'm done with this guy's games. There's some recent ones though like TLC Halloween or that new Dark Fall game which has nothing to do with the trilogy. I might check them out someday but it's not a priority.

Despite some intriguing elements, the game isn't good, but I felt compelled to see it through. Deltarune Chapter 1 (Replay) (PC)
Still a neat opening to this "sequel" but very much an introduction. Aside from the optional boss it just kind of shows off the setting and party dynamics before letting you walk through town and speak to friends new and old.
Deltarune Chapter 2 (PC)
This is where it kicks off, from establishing your home base to introducing more characters, a new, very different Dark World, and a lot more unexpected twists to the gameplay. There's another great optional boss (if not as tough as the first) and even a darker route if you're into that. There's quite a sense of mystery and foreboding from the way it ends. I'm eager to see more chapters. Hopefully it won't take as long for the next one to be released.

It kind of blows the FF7R Yuffie episode out of the water if we're comparing them. I beat this game for the first time ever. Played it via Switch with no abusing of save states/rewind.

I had given it a good try a few years ago but sadly Level 6 was quite the wall. It stands up to it's infamy of being a tough level in a game full of tough levels.

I watched a really good youtube video from a channel called "U Can Beat Video Games" and it was a very good Beginners guide that was very informative on how to beat Ghosts 'N Goblins. It was thanks to that video that I, well, beat the game!

"Inspired by real-world cults, Sagebrush is a first-person narrative-driven adventure game which thrusts players into the role of a truth-seeker who must investigate the tragic circumstances of the Perfect Heaven cults mass suicide."

"Set in New Mexico, players explore Black Sage Ranch, the former home of Father James, the revered prophet of the Perfect Heaven cult, in order to uncover the truth."

So...playing through this game felt a little unnerving. It has no jump scares or anything of the sort.
Going around and reading the lore entries was really something...
The atmosphere of this game was very chilling and even a few things that were disturbing. I really liked the PS1-like graphics.
When all was said and done, I was all like... "Whoa", when it was over.

WarioWare: Get It Together! (Switch)

It really is a mixed bag as to how much of a fit a particular character is to any given microgame, but he microgames themselves are high quality, and I'm digging this prezzie side activity.

The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures (PS4)

Clearly the writers were setting up for another title instead of concluding everything in here (and thankfully, we also have that title here as well). The game itself, however, is pretty weak - the second 'case' isn't really much of a case at all, and you don't even do a proper investigation and trial until the fourth case. It's at least better than Investigations and Apollo Justice, but that's an easy bar to clear.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Switch/SNES)

Finally...it's been a long time coming.
I was never able to beat Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts legitimately, until now. All I had to do was change up my strategy for the last level on the second loop.

Did the first loop, go through the second loop and ignore the Goddess Bracelet up until Level 7.
Basically, just hang on to the Gold Armor and Dagger. Abuse the hell out of the temporary i-frames every time you use the Fire Dragon (when you charge up the Dagger) to plow through the game.

After taking out the last Red Arremer Ace in Level 7 (surprisingly, they don't have that many in this game), I find a treasure chest that contains the Goddess Bracelet to beat Asutaroto (Astaroth) and Nebiroth. Beating them both with the Goddess Bracelet takes forever and you have to use a lot of patience to take them down. Time is also most certainly on your side on that double boss fight and running out of time is just brutal. That's actually low key the only hard part in the game.

But yeah, it felt good to finally beat this game after so many years and can finally put it behind me.

Katamari Damacy REROLL (XB1)

The nonsensical goofiness is right up my alley, and I love the concept of the game so much that I played it all the way through, but god I had to fight the controls and camera from beginning to end. I have no idea why they came up with the control scheme that they did, and changing it to simple only mitigating the issues. I only failed a mission twice (once was because my ball got stuck more than halfway through a 20+ minute stage), but the time limit was just arbitrary and prevented me from expanding and exploring to my heart's content.

katamari was originally designed for the playstation's symmetrical dualstick setup so the porting doesnt carry it terribly well, it was intentionally designed to be strange though. i think originally they wanted it to be you would have to pump each stick back and forth as if you were physically rolling the katamari with your hands, but they scrapped that due to its difficulty

Big Drunk Satanic Massacre / BDSM (PC)

Clunky controls, weird glitches, crude humor, nonsense plot. Basically existing to blow demons up. It was also a trying to be offensive and had an NSFW version for some reason (as if you needed to see mlp boobs) It was fine. C+
