The Outlast games are two of my favorite games ever. They're a little bit of jump scare horror mixed with psychological & survival horror. I can best describe it as being in a slasher film but cranked up to 11, with a nonstop brutal assault on the senses that never lets up until the credits roll. You will never feel safe anywhere, and even if there's no stalker chasing you, the feeling of paranoia and how the game constantly plays tricks and cruel jokes on the player is enough to make you feel cautious of every step you take, especially true in O2. The atmosphere in both games is superb; though Outlast 2 is my overall favorite game of the pair, the Mount Massive Asylum in Outlast 1 is the gold standard of horror ambiance in video games. Red Barrels truly crafted a claustrophobic puzzle box, a building with nothing but hopelessness and despair around every corner, as lunatics rule the roost and it seems like iron bars and caved in floors make your death seem destined to occur. I think it takes what makes the original RE games so much to fun and memorable explore while taking your defense away allowing you to focus more on tight movement and spotting escape routes.
So yeah I think they're amazing! If you are looking for something more psychological, Outlast 2 is your better bet, I personally put it on a near Silent Hill 2/3 level. --- I've decided to put my fears behind me. I am always hesitant when it comes to horror games mainly due to not being a huge fan jumpscares. This is because I'm a wuss, not because I necessarily dislike the mechanic. For instance I had a lot better time playing RE8 than RE7 for this very reason. (FNAF is excluded as the jumpscare is a result of the players actions and I can sense when a jumpscare/failure is coming).
However, I just saw a little clip of outlast which included a jumpscare just to get the feel of it and I think I can cope with it lol. I hope so anyway cos you got me excited for it haha --- Well done to azuarc for finishing 67 places above me in the 2020 GOTD Guru Contest! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Done a really terrible job keeping up with this topic lately
Saw The Forever Purge. It was trash. Pretty excited for the new Escape Room, but not necessarily because I think it'll be good Saw House (1977) through the movie club topic a few weeks ago and that was an instant favorite Super hyped for Last Night In Soho and new Candyman Watching Fear Street 1994 now. Had decently high hopes for it after hearing great things about the series, but I'm not super impressed so far. It's not terrible bit it's ridiculously on the nose but not in a way that really seems self-aware of how absurd it is. Also music is soooooooooooo on the nose but I'm willing to forgive it because 94 was an excellent year for music --- Khal Kirby, warlord of the Super Star Khalasar PSN/Steam: CheddarBBQ https://goo.gl/Diw2hs ... I've been really enjoying the Fear Streets! I think there's certainly a tongue-in-cheek element to them it's just not always on the forefront. But honestly it's just some fun horror for me that's just pushing the right buttons currently. I guess my issue with Fear Street is that it just falls into a bunch of tropes I'm pretty tired of. The bloody nose, the "accused witch from Salem was ACTUALLY a witch," etc
Forever Purge took itself really seriously and came across as the producers thinking it was a lot deeper than it actually was. A LOT of dumb jump scares I might also just be getting jaded toward horror cliches. I just downloaded a handful of more obscure horrors and thrillers I hadn't heard of from this year, so hoping to find some gems --- Khal Kirby, warlord of the Super Star Khalasar PSN/Steam: CheddarBBQ https://goo.gl/Diw2hs ... Kinda came around to the Fear Street movies by the end. What didn't work as well with the first solo was made up for by the anthology. I can't really imagine a better way for them to portray this story. There's still some obvious cheesiness (
But overall I enjoyed it! Deena I had previously liked in Trinkets and she did great here, with a mostly solid supporting cast, great soundtrack, great lighting and set work (it might be cheesy but I loved the On the whole, definitely worth seeing, kinda like a special horror event, though probably not like an instant classic --- Khal Kirby, warlord of the Super Star Khalasar PSN/Steam: CheddarBBQ https://goo.gl/Diw2hs ... more horror catchup
Omori finished this game a few days ago after seeing a couple people talking very highly of it in the VG Story topic. It's absolutely a must-play for fans of weird indie depression/horror. Strong Undertale/Earthbound vibes; equal parts goofy and fun and downright terrifying. Highly recommend. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions Don't watch the trailer because it'll spoil half the movie. I enjoyed it more than the first one! That being said, still a really dumb movie, but a fun one. The biggest draw here are that the puzzles themselves are more complex and intricate to solve, which makes them more fun to follow along. That also comes at the cost of the fact that, realistically, there is literally any chance any of these get solved without everybody dying except maybe the first one, as most of the danger is just completely random luck AND there's like a 90% chance of essential puzzle pieces getting destroyed by the traps before they're even discovered. It's a fun ride but man it suspends disbelief so hard that it often comes across as borderline silly. Also has some issues with pacing; the movie is under 90 minutes which gives it an insanely quick pace, which is kind of a detriment because these characters are flat even by horror movie standards and it feels like you're being rushed through these intricate and really interesting trap rooms too fast to appreciate them as much as they deserve. Anyway, worth seeing once (particularly on the big screen) but also you kinda need to turn your brain all the way off. Maneater Been playing this for a bit and it's barely horror, moreso just excessively violent and gruesome comedy, but it's pretty fun when the camera will stop fighting you. --- Khal Kirby, warlord of the Super Star Khalasar PSN/Steam: CheddarBBQ https://goo.gl/Diw2hs ... never heard of In The Earth but I am looking forward to seeing Old And nice on the Midsommar thing jc, that's pretty crazy. I watched The Forever Purge; I didn't hate it but man was it leagues worse than the others. I just felt like it lacked so much passion and weirdness that made the other Purges so enjoyable. And it's like, the premise of it is awful, like this type of thing where people want to keep the purge going should've happened ages ago. And since the movie technically ISN'T about the actual purge it feels like any old generic action apocalyptic movie. And yes the jumpscares were literally some of THE WORST I've ever seen in the whole horror genre. Jesus Christ. I don't even remember the other movies having jumpscares except for the first. In brighter news, I watched this almost a week ago now but forgot to talk about it: Quiet Place Part 2 was excellent! One of the best intros I've seen in modern horror. Characters are smart and inventive and I even feel like the premise is a lot better served here. The score, direction, and cinematography were all magnificent. The only problem was I feel the ending was a little cut short and also the movie has some weird retcons from the previous film too (like the ending of the first clearly showed a lot of creatures coming to attack the house and in this they're just not there...?) Escape Room will probably be coming up pretty soon for me and also Omori definitely looks interesting. I tried Maneater but I found it kind of boring unfortunately, but the game did have some great comedy! --- I've decided to put my fears behind me. I did not like In The Earth very much. I think it squandered it's concept terribly. It basically never goes all in on any of the ideas it presents and it just leaves you with kind of a gross movie that is rather forgettable. Also, this movie has the worst epilepsy triggers I've ever seen. They give you a warning for it at the beginning of the movie, but it in no way is enough. I don't know how they shipped the movie with minutes long blinding strobe lights. I feel like I missed so much of the movie because I HAD to cover my eyes and it was STILL going past my hand with the flashes. Whatever you think is the worst epilepsy trigger you've seen in a movie, I promise you this one is a dozen times worse. Also I am marathoning the Bad Ben movies for some reason. It's $100 budget Paranormal Activity, but the director and lead actor is terrible but I enjoy that he takes the piss out of everything. so I watched Triangle last night and... I have pretty mixed thoughts. It kinda reminds me of Vivarium in a lot of ways, which was another movie that I thought had some really interesting and surreal concepts orchestrated in bizarre and intriguing ways... that ultimately was held back a little by inconsistencies in its own logic and writing and inconsistent performances. So back to Triangle, I've seen a lot of praise for the main performance of Melissa George but honestly I wasn't feeling it. Some of it she does fine; particularly the aggression, but in the slower moments when she's trying to act unsettled or frightened, I thought it came off as overly forced and melodramatic. It doesn't help that she has to carry the entire film because every other character is one-note and awful (especially Sally, goddamn is she just irritating every time she's on screen) and I just don't think her performance was strong enough to carry it. Compare it to someone like Samara Weaving in Ready Or Not (another young woman thrown unexpectedly into a weird fantasy horror scenario in a fixed location she's unfamiliar with) and it's easier to define why one performance feels strong enough to carry it and the other doesn't.
The story itself was really interesting: from what I can gather, Some of it was a little cringeworthy though. In particular, the one Jess line, "My world is waiting for his mom to pick him up from school. Don't talk to me about MY WORLD" that repeats like 3 or 4 times in the film is just... not good. It's bad writing and delivered in a tone that doesn't match the scene. I also laughed out loud at Jess Other things just really detract from the mysterious and wild puzzle plot it has going. Namely, inconsistencies in its own logic. Things like The issue with a movie like this, that breaks the laws of reality in order to set its own rules, is that when done right, this can lead to some of the most incredible fantasy/scifi/magicalrealism movies out there, but when they don't follow the rules that they themselves establish, it feels frustrating and incomplete Overall I'm torn on how to rank or define my feelings, because it held itself back in a few essential spots, but what it did well it did really well. --- Khal Kirby, warlord of the Super Star Khalasar PSN/Steam: CheddarBBQ https://goo.gl/Diw2hs ... Oh man, yeah. I said to my girlfriend while watching that it was the most M. Night movie ever because of the dialogue in the first ten minutes. Like, you have to go in expected SyFy Original levels of dialogue with M. Night movies. I didn't even mind them too much.
But man, the ending was just completely miserable to sit through. Just so outrageously contrived it took me out of the movie entirely. And then the movie just. wouldn't. end. It just keeps going, and you have a feeling it might keep going, but it goes past the part where you think it has to stop going. And keeps going. And then goes more! Like there is a lot to like in Old, but just sloppy screenwriting in the middle of the movie muddled things, but not to an unwatchable degree. But it's hilarious that the first 10-15 minutes of the movie was only there to set up the twist in the last 10 minutes of the movie. --- I stream sometimes. Check it out! www.twitch.tv/heroicbiz/ ...
