So I DID watch Possessor, and honestly I was REALLY impressed. I liked it a lot, honestly I'm not sure what else to say because I just really really liked it lol. Definitely gave me a little bit of Inception vibes, but this is obviously its own thing. The story definitely didn't go where I was expecting it to, which was a good thing in this case.

Possessor definitely isn't a perfect movie but it IS one of the most interesting movies of the year, easily. Really great thriller that I wouldn't be surprised to see inspire others down the line

Just watched Tragedy Girls (2017)

definitely recommend it for anyone who's a fan of horror comedy. It takes a lot of inspiration from stuff like Scream and Final Destination, and is just a lot of fun all around, and the two leading girls are great (one of the leads, Brianna Hildebrand, also played Negasonic Teenage Warhead in Deadpool, and she's just fantastic througout)

Watched the 2020 thriller Promising Young Woman

I have very mixed feelings about the movie and its execution but by far the best thing to come out of it was its orchestral horror cover of Toxic by Britney Spears

Did the other one purge or fill up? Either way I'm sorry I wasn't around for the end of it. Last year was a stressful mess and I kind of forgot this topic series existed for a while. The last horror related media vcharon and I watched were the Haunting of Hill House and His House. I'll give my full thoughts on them on Monday (if I don't forget again), but for now I will highly recommend both if you have Netflix. We're a bit reluctant to check out the Haunting of Bly Manor because it seems like it didn't quite live up to its predecessor, but we'll get around to it eventually. Also while far from a horror, Promising Young Woman does feature elements of it along with lots of suspense and some fabulous twists. The last fifteen minutes in particular are a thrill ride I didn't want to come off of. Char didn't watch this one with me, but I recommend it as well.

All in all this is shaping up to be a much better year for horror. Can't wait for Resident Evil VIII (feet tall). Biding the time by watching playthroughs of At Dead of Night which I will hopefully get the chance to play myself soon. I've had almost everything spoiled on it aside from the ending which the developer has apparently asked streamers not to share in it's full capacity so I'll just have to see it for myself.

Edit: Oh I forgot to mention we saw Freaky as well in November. It was alright. It was promising enough to get us to venture out to see films in theaters again, but nothing super memorable or genre-defining. As far as subversive meta horror/comedies go it's above average I suppose. Of course that's not my favorite subgenre, and I feel like nothing will ever do it better than Cabin in the Woods did it - go ahead change my mind. We liked it, but I doubt we'd go out of our way to see it again.

It filled up!Haunting of Bly Manor is definitely different from Hill House but it's still very scary in its own way and has really great pacing.

I liked Promising Young Woman quite a bit though I have to admit it was ultimately a bit clunky in its message, like at a certain point I felt it became less about MeToo and more about glorification of violence.

For more on the horror game front, The Medium (from the developers of Observer and Layers of Fear) came out yesterday and it's incredible. Fixed camera with throwback puzzles, how can you go wrong! It's free if you have game pass on PC or Series X.

And Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson's new film Synchronic finally released on streaming, it's just as superb as their previous three efforts and pretty well cemented their place as my favorite horror directors in the game today if they weren't already.

THANK YOU

Literally the exact same thought I had, like it had all the pieces there to be excellent but got lost in its message

I really, really want The Medium but I don't have an Xbox or a PC that can handle it. Between that and Hellblade, I'm ALMOST tempted to save up and get both that and PS5 (assuming they ever become available)

I actually can't believe this. lol Host was Unfriended but tapered down and just having a fun time with its nonsense! I loved every second of it.

re: Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor, I think Hill House is the stronger show episode to episode. It's really outstanding in what it does and keeps a constant flow. I think what Bly Manor does better, aside from being a gothic romance more than a horror story, is that it builds up to one hell of a climax. All of the initial pieces just sort of build up that by the time you get to that one moment, Lady in the Lake choking the eff out of the lead, from there on it's just some brilliant stuff that wouldn't be as impactful if the rest of the story wasn't crafted so astoundingly before it. It's just two different sets of pacing between the show, and if you go in expecting non-stop thrills like Hill House, you'll like Bly Manor a lot. I think Bly Manor has the absolute most dreadful moment of either show though.

Just watched Detention (2019)

watched it, then went back to rewatch the parts I fell asleep for, and am now especially confused about the order of events and the fates of the characters, given that the film already has a very unconventional approach to the timeline, interweaving reality and fantasy.

That being said, I still loved the movie, it was one of the most creative and bizarre horror movies I've seen in the last few years, and I would absolutely recommend it

Anyone else watching Diminish? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPT85_luGsA
It's a Petscop-esque series where a guy plays the game. But the game seems a bit... weird, and there's a tragic backstory behind its creation. But this isn't a creepypasta/game is haunted deal, at least not yet. This is more character-driven story of overcoming depression. Overall very good stuff I think, I'm caught up and eager to see how it continues.

Willy's Wonderland

I mean everybody else was watching it and I already downloaded it thinking it would likely win, so I figured why not. Still gonna watch Fargo this week but I've already watched it like 5 times before, it's one of my favorite movies.

This was dumb. And, like, I get that it was supposed to be dumb, but this actually kinda made me mad how dumb it was. I can't really explain that feeling. Like, it wasn't scary, but it wasn't really supposed to be? But it also wasn't funny enough to be a proper horror comedy. It fell into really stupid tropes like the one black character acting like a total stereotype and the stupid couple sneaking off to have sex when they literally already knew the things were alive and then SEEING it in the room and waving it off despite already having known it was alive. Seriously, no decision anyone made throughout any of this movie made even a little bit of sense.

I'm all for goofy over-the-top nonsense (I LOVED Cage's other recent film Mandy and was hoping for something on par with that) but there's a limit. There has to be some bit of sense to be made of any of it, because otherwise it's just kind of all just bullshit happening without reason. You can't care about any of the characters because most of them are just blank fodder to be killed off. The only character with a personality is Cage, who is silent and also nonsensical in his actions. Like if you're going to kill the animatronics anyway, why not just do that? Why wait until they're already mid-kill?

Also the sound editing was really wonky; I didn't really dig most of the music and it sounded way louder than scenes called for, often coming across as weirdly jarring. Sound effects were similarly inconsistent volumes. The ending even feels a little icky, with Liz getting in the car and taking the drink offered by the strange old man. Was that a happy ending? What even is that?

also my girlfriend called it the worst movie she'd ever seen.

2/10

Also today I watched After Midnight, which was a cute, neat little movie. Does the Babadook thing where the creature is kind of a representation of the protagonist's inner struggle (in this case his insistence on keeping things the way they are and not leaving his comfort zone even though it's potentially killing his relationship) only maybe it's NOT??!???!? Not that I mind, I do tend to love movie that play with that idea smartly, which this one mostly does, even if it takes longer than needed to get its point across. Overall I enjoyed it, especially the goofy thrill of its ending, even if I saw it coming.

Horror movies need to stop fucking killing the cats though, goddamn.

I think part of my mind was just thinking the whole time "this is too sweet of a moment, they're not just going to leave the thread of the monster hanging." I'm still torn over whether the monster was actually real or not, but either way I love the way the ending was done. Him killing it with the antlers or his prized 10-point buck was a nice choice (although, are they supposed to come off that easy? I'm no hunter but I was under the impression they didn't just pop off like that lol)
