#93 Pokmon Red Version (Game Boy, 1998)

The first Pokmon game is a miracle. Pokmon Red and Blue were released as such technical messes that there should have been no way that they caught on like they did. I guess that's a testament to the strength of the concept. Game Freak combined monster collection with simple RPG game mechanics and created something revolutionary. And I guess being revolutionary once was enough, because ever since then the company has been content to just re-release the same basic game over 15 times now.

Sure, each new version is usually an improvement over the last, but for me, nothing ever captured the magic the same way that the first one did. I got Red Version and my brother got Blue, and we raced each other through the game, battling several times as we improved our makeshift Pokmon crews. I never noticed all the glitches and problems, which means they might as well have not been there. We played the games without much future knowledge of what was in them, which made the world seem so much more grand and mysterious. It was always a surprise as to what Pokmon we would find.

My brother and I made a tradition of playing through the next few versions together, but after he moved out I lost interest in the series and never got back into it again. I knew that the other experiences could never live up to what I had gone through already.

#89 - WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2006 (PS2, 2005)

I was a huge wrestling fan in the late 90s and early 00s. My first wrestling game I ever owned was WCW Thunder, where the game itself sucked, but each wrestler had about 20 seconds to talk about how they were gonna fuck up whoever they fought, and thats rad. But the PS2 wrestling games were much better, culminating in my favorite: Smackdown vs Raw 2006. The main draw to this game was the GM mode, where you could take control of one of the two shows, and then battle the other to see who could get the better ratings. You could instill rivalries between wrestlers, have them run promos, and book matches to try and work up the fans as best you could. It wasnt nearly as in-depth as something like TEW, but it was functional, and that was good enough for me.

The game itself was great, too. That said, the one match my friends and I would play pretty much always were the Triple Threat Tag Team Ladder matches, which would lead to some hilarious shenanigans 100% of the time. Someone would be grabbing the belt, and then someone would take the ladder out from under them, and another would jump off a turnbuckle, and the physics would get all wonky and wed just laugh our asses off. Fun times.

#92 The Wolf Among Us (Playstation 3, 2013)

Telltale was responsible for breathing new life into the Adventure game genre with its formula of episodic "CYOA" games, and even if the company kind of beat that formula to death, I will always have to respect that.

Before it got old, the company put out The Wolf Among Us, which is based on comic book series called Fables. It's an interesting take on the characters from well-known fairy tales who all live together in disguise in New York City.

The game is presented in the noir style which is neat and I found the story engaging enough to hold my attention throughout all five episodes. I know better than to play any Telltale game more than once to avoid ruining the illusion of choice, and so it was all over pretty quickly. I guess there is some sequel that has been in development hell for years, but I would play that probably if it ever comes out.

#90. God of War (PS4, 2018)

Dad of Boy. Fun fact, Kratos says Boy 18672 times in this game. I was never huge on the original series, but did play all of them. God of War 3 was my favorite because for games like this I want it as shiny as possible, and 3 was very shiny. Then this game came out and completely changed the series and was so much better for it. The combat is still very mashy but not as much square to win. The axe, oh man the axe. It feels so good to throw the axe. Sexual. The story is the usual obscenely over the top stuff you expect from the series. Ya know stuff like literally killing God. The twist at the end has me interested in what a sequel might do.

#92. The King of Fighters XIII (Xbox 360, 2011)

There are a lot of King of Fighters games, but it's never a series I got into until the more recent games. King of Fighters XII was a huge disappointment in the KoF series, both in terms of play and a limited roster. With KoFXIII, SNK really worked to shake the previous failure and make a fantastic game. The roster was way bigger in this game, packed with characters. Some are stronger than others, but most are viable and there's enough variety that no one should have a hard time finding characters that fit their style. All the character sprites are so high quality and beautiful. It's a great game to look at.

The difficulty is both a positive and negative with this game. SNK fighting games typically have really hard single player modes, which feels dumb when you fail at it a bunch, but it also feels nice to win, and gives a reason to go back to the single player mode every now and then.

KoFXIII also allows for some wildly long combos, which are notoriously hard to hit consistently. The trial mode leans into this, starting you with some three or four move combos, and quickly ramping up to combos with stuff like an HD activation and three juggling fireball loops and a super finish. Below is a video of one set of trials. But as hard as this is, it makes it feel good to actually chain together anything, and makes for some really exciting tournament matches when you see people pull off the crazy stuff while under pressure. The 2013 Evo finals for this game remains one of the most exciting tournament finals to date.

#100. The Stanley Parable (PC, 2013)
This is the top 100 list of a man named Wigs. Wigs sat at his computer all week, making lists. He re-arranged them, re-sorted them, argued with himself over how to label the individual games. But what effect would it have on the greater world? Would anyone really care if he switched his 100th and 99th favorite games? Would anyone notice and begrudge him for mislabeling an Action-Adventure game as a platformer? Or is anyone even reading this at all? Well, for those of you who are reading this, if you've played the game, you know the voice you're using in your head right now, and that's really the main reason for THE STANLEY PARABLE's placement on this list. After all, it's just a simple walking simulator. But also, the fact it has a pretty interesting narrative at its core, or if not, at least making the game's probably meaningless choices are fun, maybe just as fun as a supposedly meaningless choice you might make in any game, except this time, it's narrated. And your interaction with the narrator provides all the context, and fun of getting all the endings. And at least, just a little, maybe it makes you think about what really matters to you in life.

So reader, what was your favorite ending? The Broom Closet ending was my favorite ending!

96. Kirby & the Amazing Mirror (GBA, 2004)

The Kirby series feels like it can often be a well of untapped and unreached potential. Spin-offs like Air Ride that never got fully fleshed-out, 3D platformers like Kirby 64 that never got a proper sequel, or gimmicky platformers like Canvas Curse that only touched the surface of their novel concept - all these are abundant in the series' history. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror lands, perhaps barely, above these to make a complete and satisfying experience.
You've got typical Kirby gameplay - travel across some levels, swallow enemies, collect powers, and defeat bosses. The game's gimmick is that the entire world is an interconnected map, la Super Star's Great Cave Offensive, but much larger and less linear. Because the only thing gating your access to any portion of the game is having the right power, which can be found across the whole map, you can basically go anywhere and do any boss in any order. This works well, giving the user a lot of control over their experience, but also leaves the whole thing feeling somewhat unfocused. Additionally, across the map are unlockable Kirby colors, sound test records, and permanent health upgrades, so at least if you've run into a dead end there is something to find. On the other hand, there's still the feeling that a more focused Metroidvania Kirby experience, with more thorough gating and progression, and more comprehensive powers, could be the top-tier Kirby game that the series has been missing for quite a while.

95. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1, 1998)

This is probably the highest-quality game in the bottom, say, 25% of my list. Final Fantasy Tactics was a huge turning point in the popularity and design of console strategy RPGs. It's immensely replayable, rewards players for both their time and skill, and has one of the best plots in the series - a somewhat overwrought but satisfying story of political intrigue that despite some awkward translation holds up super well.
But alas, I've never beaten this game...I made it to chapter 3 and was getting destroyed too much to make it farther. And the prospect of building up job skills through a bunch of classes to properly round out my team seemed daunting and exhausting. The game's great, and I am very not great at it. It deserves recognition for its quality, but also seemed hard to toss any higher due to my own lack of expertise.

OH BY THE WAY, speaking of Persona.....

#88 - Persona 5 (PS4, 2016)

Persona 5 is mechanically the best Persona game. The dungeons are really cool, theres a ton of different, new skills to use, persona fusing is easier than ever, Mementos is neat (though its music is god-awful), and the way free time is handled is so much more streamlined than the previous games.

All that said, some of it feels unfinished. Goros motivations are barely expanded upon. It feels like Haru only exists because you need another playable character that can use Psi spells. I had to google Persona 5 team members because I couldnt even remember her name; she's that forgettable. I dont understand why the Hawaii storyline was even in the game. In fact, I feel like the game's story continues to get less and less engrossing as the game goes along. The first palace is the best one in the game, and has the best villain to boot! Its still a great game, but its not without some glaring flaws in its story.

93.) Cannon Fodder (PC, 1993)

https://youtu.be/PiYuq6Ac3a0

As the theme song probably hints at, this is a game with a very darkly humorous view of war and warfare. Much like General Chaos it was a blend of strategy and action but instead of an arcadelike player vs player focus, this was focused on a series of objectives that escalated in intensity and stupidity.

The game has an inherently anti war message that it portrays through its gameplay similar to another game that appears later on my list.

And its just fun as hell.

I didnt actually have a SNES growing up - ours was a genesis household. But my grandma did and she just loved Kirby and games that were "low stress" as she called them to bits. So she played the ever loving crap out of Kirbys Dream Course and when Id go over Id play too.

The whimsical use of Kirbyisms as you use kirby as a golf ball is really charming as is the sound track. Just a low impact high addiction game of my youth.

#91. Strider (PC, 2014)

This one was a nice surprise. I had played the original arcade Strider before, which was... unique. The 2014 version took some ideas from the old Strider a ninja with strong movement options moving through levels that aren't necessarily linear and decided to not just enhance those ideas, but to flesh it out into a full Metroidvania-style game.

The result was a very solid, very exciting game. The game had a good pace, with quick and fluid action. It kind of reminds me of Shadow Complex (which didn't quite make this list), but more colorful, action that's a little more fun, and with a much cooler main character. I really hope Capcom builds from here and gives us more Strider like this in the future.

#90. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (Xbox 360, 2013)

Brothers is a game that seems very simple on the surface, but is very clever and expresses a very touching story. Two brothers are on a journey to find a cure for their sick father. The two analog sticks control the two brothers, one stick for each. It's a little awkward, but creative, and works within the pace of the game.

Each of the brothers has their own unique traits, displayed through the various puzzles you encounter. The obvious one is that the older brother is larger and can reach and lift more things. The younger one is smaller, and can fit into smaller passages. The unique traits allow the two characters to really show their personalities, and having to work your thumbs separately, yet in tandem, helps the teamwork of the brothers on screen feel more real. The game is packed with a lot more emotion than you would expect, and it's just something that really stuck with me long after I played it.

#99. Death Stranding (PS4, 2019)
Honestly, I'm not really sure about how much I can say I "like" this game, but something about it is very satisfying and calming. Getting a package order, balancing it properly, and making a trek on foot across all kinds of terrain, while doing your very best not to fall over and also taking care of a baby while you're doing it, is about as Kojima as it's gonna get, and I appreciate that. I didn't really dig fighting the Shadow Realm monsters as you're never really well-equipped, but that's part of the point I suppose. You're supposed to get that UUGHHHHHH feeling whenever your magic backpack picks em up.
I like Daryl Dixon, so playing as exactly him was at least modestly appealing. Theres a few guest porters which is fun, among them Conan O'Brien and Geoff Knightly. All the acting jobs are great, Mads Mikkelsen and Troy Baker shine in their roles. Noting again, they look like them. Well, sort of. Fragile is a cool character too. Or at least she looks cool.
I have no idea what to make of the story. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all, and there's a crapton of spoilers, and I couldn't even spoil this game if I tried because I would have no idea what even to say. Maybe it's all pizzazz and no substance, but it's Kojima so it's perfectly fine with me. Enjoy your hour long final cutscene again. I did!

Anyway, the gameplay is what makes this very appealing to me, in it being an extremely unique experience, between the goal of just getting from point A to point B, but also the idea of the "network" and as you get a network online, you too, will become online, and other players structures around the world that they have built to help them in theirown games will start to become available to you. And you can leave likes and such, until they deteriorate over about 2-3 weeks in real time, unless you pump them full of more materials. Besides walking you cangraduate to a motorcycle, a truck, build roads, and eventually ziplines, especially to help through those tricky mountain segments, and let me say- THAT is the greatest feeling. That after dozens of treks up and down the damn snowy windy mountains with Shadow Realm creatures attacking you every 5 minutes... once you set up a full zipline network (aided by your network friends!) and just zip around past everything to pretty much wherever you want on the map- you feel great about it. Make sure to do the all of the pizza deliveries all the way through the end of the game!

But yeah, this game makes absolutely no sense and it's really not a good game, but I like it anyway.
Also it's probably the best-looking PS4 game I played

#91 God of War: Ghost of Sparta (Playstation 3, 2011)

Ghost of Sparta probably would have been the best God of War game if it had not originally been a PSP release. Still, it looks pretty good and plays well. Despite the technical limitations, the game manages to have some nice setpiece moments and entertaining boss fights. The PS3 version upscales nicely and runs smoothly. The lack of enemy hordes onscreen simultaneously is usually compensated for by making most of the environments more intimate.

It takes place between the first two games and explores Kratos's predictably tragic childhood and family. So although it's all Greek mythological nonsense, this is really the only game in the original God of War series with any emotional resonance at all. In a series that features a wholly despicable cast, that's an accomplishment.

91.) Hexyz Force (PSP, 2009)

Far be it for me to allow nick to be the only one plumbing the depths of obscure JRPGs, this game on the one hand doesnt do anything super new or exciting mechanically or even plotwise.

But it is one of the very few "choose a protagonist" games that really makes that gimmick work. The game has substantially different plot beats on the Cecillia and Levant paths and is actually short enough at around 35 hours per run that I actually was able to experience both branches.

The twos paths do sometimes intertwine which is cool but they dont become concurrent so you have a sense of how different the other route will be. My other comment will be that the music rules a surprising amount for a PSP game.

#98 Kirby's Block Ball (Game Boy, 1995)
It's Arkanoid, but Kirby! Adding Kirby's powers to the mix where some powers can break certain blocks, which usually leads to secret areas and bonus games was a great mechanic. The different kinds of blocks in this game you had to deal with in different ways was a unique and interesting gameplay mechanic. You could also time an A hit with the paddle to make kirby puffed up, so he'd hit blocks faster and harder (and some blocks also only break in this way). Each world is themed and has I think 10 stages per world. The bonus games were especially fun to play, if you knew the secrets of how to get there, and each world's boss was fun to fight also. Implementing the Kirby powers into the game also add a unique spin. Just a very addicting and fun game, that always had a ton of replay value.

Up next: A great game based on a very good game show. Instead of its companion very good game based on its companion great game show.

Definitely still fun to go back to. I really miss the colors in this game. Brilliant reds, oranges, yellows, and purples you could mix and match and theme different rides or parts of the park based on color scheme. It's the same itch I have to replay X-COM 2; sure, the gameplay is a blast, but making unique characters with bold brilliant colors is all I want.

#89 - WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2006 (PS2, 2005)

The main draw to this game was the GM mode, where you could take control of one of the two shows, and then battle the other to see who could get the better ratings. You could instill rivalries between wrestlers, have them run promos, and book matches to try and work up the fans as best you could. It wasnt nearly as in-depth as something like TEW, but it was functional, and that was good enough for me.

Have you checked out UpUpDownDown? Yeah, Critical Role is the big appointment internet video, but GM Mode is my personal, "Is it Thursday yet?" Hacker's Memory? Heard that was a better game, and I'll be playing in the near future (stupid digimon locked behind playing the other game, razzle frazzle)

Hacker's Memory is definitely the better game, has more likable characters but the story is still generic JRPG 101.

Gameplay is still fun and evolving/devolving Digimon into completely OP monsters while carrying around a bunch of poops for massive EXP boosts is a good time.

I do think the localizations are very tongue in cheek and self aware.

94. Time Crisis II (Arcade, 1998)

Light gun games are typically some of the most b.s. of 90's arcade fare - quarter munchers that required significant memorization and ridiculous reaction times to get past large chunks of the game. Enter the Time Crisis series, using a foot pedal as its key non-shooting mechanic to dodge attacks and hazards appearing on the screen. Time Crisis 2 is my favorite; it moves along at a rapid pace, full of ridiculous action set-pieces (including the above boss who swings a giant missile at you as his main attack), and lacks some of the unnecessary complexity of its sequels. It's light-hearted fun and significantly fairer than other game series, and still stands out as one of the most appealing and high-quality arcade shooters of all time.

93. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA, 2003)

The third and undoubtedly most-beloved of the three GBA Metroidvanias, Aria of Sorrow has a lot going for it: a surprisingly engaging storyline with multiple endings, a fun cast of characters, and super-tight controls and movement. Despite its game size and length, it's the first Castlevania handheld game to really stand up to Symphony of the Night in terms of control fluidity and game mechanics. Its signature mechanic, the Soul system, allows the player to acquire special abilities from every unique enemy in the game, ranging from special attacks to permanent stat boosts to effects that progress the story farther. It's great and simple, so much that it was reused in the game's direct sequel and also in a similar capacity in IGA's Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
Aria of Sorrow is super fast and breezy - the game can be beaten pretty comfortably in under 10 hours in a first playthrough and in a few once you know what you're doing. And perhaps that's also one of its biggest weaknesses - the game is significantly easier than most of its predecessors and its castle is one of the smallest of the Metroidvania titles. But it's very fun and charming, and the Soul system ensures that replays still feel fresh and different. There are more of these to come in the list, and Aria is certainly a strong game, just one without some of the depth and detail of other series greats.

#87. Sonic Generations (PS3, 2011)

Yeah this is my favorite Sonic game. The only time they have done 3D correctly. They also somehow stopped doing it correctly by the next game they made. Sonic team is weird. This game is just a huge nostalgia trip merging new cool Sonic with old fat Sonic. The highlight is Robotnik interacting with himself. Some amazing remixes of classic songs in here.

Generations > 2 > Mania > 3K > Adventure DX > Advance 3 > Advance 2 > Advance > Forces > Adventure 2 > 1 > 4 > 3D Blast

Shout out to Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Racing Transformed/All Stars. Also Sonic R.

#94 - Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS, 2013)

Animal Crossing was always one of my favorite series (even though I skipped City Folk all together) so I eventually went to the early release at Nintendo World in NYC and got the game a day early. Since Animal Crossing is very much entrenched in is mandatory tutorials that have you waste days (and is entirely the reason New Horizons won't be making my top 10 this year) it was actually great to have this early. Even had some great online experiences with both board 8 and some players on the Something Awful forums during my 50 hours with it. It was better than the two previous titles at the very least.

#93 - South Park: The Stick of Truth (PS3, 2014)

I haven't watched much South Park in years and only remember a few episodes, but The Stick of Truth is one of the few licensed games that really stick the landing on the humor of the show and bring it into a honestly great turn-based RPG, despite the framerate drops and slowdown on the PS3 version. Beat the game with a Thief the first time through, and then a Jew to get the one trophy and cleanup the collectables missed the first time around. I still have yet to get to Fractured But Whole, but I'll probably enjoy that one once I do!

#92 - Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey (PC, 2014)

This is probably the least recognizable game on my list. It's basically a RPG crossed up with Scrabble in which you have a pool of 15 letters and you spell a word to damage enemies. Several enemies have different conditions, like taking more damage with a word with a certain letter, or they can affect the tiles used by having them inflict poison when using some of them. It's very addicting, and I've gotten the achievements in it three times - the original and remastered versions on Steam, and the Vita version. Sadly the only other game these developers have made is some idle game for mobile devices, and I'm completely uninterested in that.

#91 - Dynasty Warriors 8 (PS3, 2013)

Dynasty Warriors 8 was the first Three Kingdoms Warriors game I've finished, so it's also naturally the highest musou on my list as well. I initially only completed Wu and Shu first and thought the game to be merely average overall, but eventually got to the true heroes in Wei, Jin, and the Others and was much more invested in their stories. This is still one of my favorite videos regarding the series:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozqTRuSvdy0

I still have not earned the platinum in this because it is ridiculous for how much time it takes to get the last bronze trophy, and I don't think I'll be doing it any time soon. Still, this game caused me to buy many other Warriors games, some of which I've enjoyed (but not as much as this one) and some that are best left forgotten.

Jin > Wei > Others > Wu >>>>>>>>>>>>> Shu

I'm fairly certain this next game will be the most unknown game on my list.

#89. Kamui (PC, 1999)

I like shmups. They're fun games. I'm not great at them, however. I think I can play the decently well, but I struggle with the hard ones. So when I play them, I'm at more of a casual level. I don't get into the high score chasing mechanics, the bullet grazing, the combo chaining, etc.The bullet hell games can be a good time, but also get to be a bit much for me to keep up with. I just want to fly around and blow stuff up, and dodge a reasonable amount of projectiles and obstacles. I think the older style of shmups appeals to me more, stuff along the lines of R-Type, Gradius, Raiden, Darius, etc. And even then, I can't always quantify why I like some more than others. The pace and feel of the game, the style, the music, these all seem like subjective things, but that's what I lean into.

Kamui is the second game in a series of three shmups (the other two games are Alltynex and Reflexx). It's a vertical scrolling shmup where you mostly fight enemies in the foreground (on the same level as you), but you can also attack enemies in the background (flying on a lower altitude than you). You get a couple tools that helps keep the game from being incredibly difficult. Your ship has a shield, so you can take some damage before dying, a nice forgiving change from the standard instant deaths that are in most shmups. You also have a meter that fills over time. This can be used for your powerful attack weapon, or for an auto-targeting multi-hit weapon, which is great for crowd control.

It's not an overly difficult or long game, maybe only half an hour long? The weapons and shields you get helps the game from feeling overly difficult, so you don't have to suffer at the hands of a singular mistake. There is a lot of stuff to shoot and blow up, but a lot of firepower that you always have access to. The visuals and audio are clear and full of energy, so all the explosions have a satisfying look feel.

I bought the whole triolgy on Steam a few years back, and while all three games were fun, I found that I kept going back to Kamui and just wanting to play that again and again. It was a very unexpected good time.

#90 Darksiders (Playstation 3, 2010)

Darksiders is one of the only games that has taken on the Legend of Zelda "formula" and actually managed to be on par with its inspiration. It takes the basic framework of the Zelda games (explore world, enter dungeon, get item, use item, repeat) and combines it with a slick character action system that doesn't really get old.

The art design is one of the strong points of the series. It evokes a lot of the classic 3D action adventure games from the N64 and PS2 eras, but makes it all very smooth and slick. The story moves quickly and delivers a great cliffhanger ending. Too bad the sequels decided not to actual advance the story at all ever.

I know I complain about game series that fail to innovate, but I wish that Darksiders 2 and 3 did not try so hard to be something different. The first Darksiders is easily the best of the three (have not played Genesis) and I would have loved to play more of it.

Darksiders is weird because every game is a different genre basically. They all barely advance the story/happen at the same time... or before in some cases.

I am really hoping 4 will finally pick up where 1 left off.

#87 - Trauma Team (Wii, 2010)

I like the Trauma Center series. I reeeeeally like Trauma Team, though. If you havent played any of the games in the series, you perform surgeries on people. In most of them, they kinda devolve over time to fighting man made viruses that behave peculiarly inside peoples bodies. In the words of Egoraptor, it feels like youre fighting aliens with zappy lasers. Thats not to say thats a bad thing, per se, but they leave their comparatively mundane roots very suddenly.

Trauma Team is a bit different. Instead of performing surgeries as one person, you take control of a whole team comprised of 6 people. There is a member of that team that performs the same surgeries as before, but the other 5 are all drastically different. One is a first-responder, whose job it is to go to the scene and stabilize the patient(s). At one point, you might be juggling 5 patients at once, and it gets a little crazy. One is a specialist, who removes polyps and repairs broken bones. One is a gastroenterologist who uses an endoscopy to treat polyps and retrieve swallowed items.

The other two are more unique, as their jobs are less gameplay- and more story-focused, and are the characters that truly make this game memorable to me. Dr. Cunningham is just a medical doctor, who performs diagnoses on patients. He looks and acts like Spike Spiegel, and is given a sassy AI to help him funnel symptoms into a database to narrow down what illness or syndrome the patient might have. It leads to some incredible dialogue and very memorable moments.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kimishima is a medical examiner who performs autopsies. Except she has a phone that can hear the last words of a dead person. Look, dont question it too much. In her missions, you must examine crime scenes, gather clues, and then piece together what happened with logic. Youll then pick apart testimonies from witnesses and come up with the true killer. Her missions are probably my favorite in the game, because theyre so reminiscent of Ace Attorney Investigations.

All six characters have an overarching story that takes some wild twists and turns, as you switch between them to get to an ending that actually hits a little close to home, given how 2020 went. But that doesnt detract from how much I love this game, which lands at #87 on my list.

PS: Go check out my showcasing of this game at 2019's Extra Life! It was a big hit among the attendees!

The Trauma Team segment starts at 55:41. If nothing else, please watch from 2:31:24 to 2:32:46 to get a better idea of why I love this game. For further recommendations for scenes, try out 3:10:09 to 3:14:26. If you have a lot of time, but not like 4 hours of time, check out my two favorite chapters in the game (they're long, story chapters), that take place from 1:40:30 to 2:29:56 and from 3:29:20 to 4:16:38.

I liked the Mario Party esque battle system more of Stick of Truth more than Fractured's Fire Emblem style , but that was mostly because it didn't do it as well. Fractured is probably a more solid game all around though. Both games on my Top 200 at least.

#97. Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? (PC, 1997)
This game apparently got a name change somewhere along the way as "Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time", I suppose to differentiate it from the older NES/PC game.
I loved this game as a kid. It's an edutainment game at its surface, but it's a good ol fashioned point and click adventure at its soul. Though a pretty basic one, but as a big Carmen Sandiego fan as a kid- of both the game shows and most of the other video games too (Where in the USA? and World?)- this one really appealed to me as it got out of the simple genre of "Get geography clue, then go place" to having a little contained thing to solve for your historical figures through time, asking to find out what they need, solving each timeline's little puzzle, and then figuring out where the thief is. I went back and looked at a playthrough of this game, and I can see why it appealed still,so I figure that's worth something. There's an Edison/Lightbulb stage, so that definitely had some biased appeal to me, and it had a lot of Lynne Thigpen, who was great as always as The Chief (RIP). No Rockapella sadly.
Anyway, this was an important game to me as a kid that I played a shit ton, and a lot of the history lessons from it really did stick with me, and the point and click adventure style puzzles you had to "solve" in each area were fun.

For example, Edison needed a spool of thread to finish a light bulb, but the Cotton Store (yeah) didn't want to sell it to you until the morning. So you had to borrow Edison's phonograph, place it outside the shop owner's home window, knock on the shop door to talk to the guard who calls the owner, the owner says "Do NOT give those rascals a spool of thread!", but you've recorded it, so then you go back later to the door with your recording and you have to play various parts of the recording to respond to the guard properly, including cutting off the "Do NOT" part so he just hears "give those rascals a spool of thread!" and that's how you get it. All while learning about the light bulb and Edison!

Anyway, Broderbund was the shit.

#88. Gain Ground (Genesis, 1991)

Gain Ground doesn't look like a game that should be as fun as it is. Every stage is a single static screen, from a top down perspective, and your goal is to either guide your characters across the screen to the exit, or to eliminate the enemies from the screen. It's a very simple concept, but some smart design choices pull a lot of mileage out of so little.

Every character has two attacks, and all the attacks vary. Speed, strength, angle, number of projectiles, distances, and type of weapon can all be different. It can make some characters more useful in some stages, but less in others. It plays fairly slow and deliberate, but given the limited space, the action is still fairly constant. You only start with a couple characters, but can rescue characters in maps to build up your army to 20. Each character you use can rescue one other character on a map by leading them to the exit. The captured characters are often placed in tricky positions, so you can get hit and captured yourself, so risk needs to be weighed. A failed rescue mission means you need to rescue two captured characters, and another failure means three captured, and sometimes it might be wise to just skip a rescue so you don't mount several losses. Ah, but maybe that captured character has a great weapon I want...

I first played this on the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2, a game I originally thought would mostly Sonic and Phantasy Star, and a handful of generic throwaway titles. It turns out there were some hidden gems, and I was glad this game was an inclusion.

92. DJ Max Portable (PSP, 2006)

One of the most addictive and enjoyable handheld rhythm games in what was frankly a pretty dang good era for handheld rhythm games. Shamelessly lifting most of its design aesthetic from the beatmania IIDX games, DJ Max feels much like the Pump it Up to IIDX's DDR (along with the obvious Korean-Japanese comparisons to boot). That said, it's an excellent game with lots of standout tracks, and absolutely stands out on its own merits. There are a lot of different modes (I think 4,5,6, and 8 buttons are all supported on this version) but 6-button is the best and feels like the truest incarnation of the game's formula. Timing windows are generous, but having to play the entire game on a handheld with button controls probably demands a healthy bit of leeway. Interestingly enough, I never actually owned this game (despite playing a whole bunch back in the 06/07 range) and so I can't speak to its DLC and sequels, but they did do a PS4 version a few years back that was killer and had a bunch of the "classic" tracks from this version.
All in all, an excellent start to a great and still ongoing series. Can't recommend them highly enough.

91. Zany Golf (PC, 1988)

Undoubtedly the weirdest pick on my entire list. Zany Golf is a cute and creative miniature-golf simulator with only 9 holes. The game gives you a set number of strokes to complete each hole, carrying any leftovers with you as you advance, making finishing the whole course a reasonable challenge. The game is still visually appealing, in a classic SimCity 2000/Roller Coaster Tycoon isometric-pixel-art kinda way. And there's a lot of really neat mechanics, too, with a hamburger that jumps over the hole the more you click it, and "magic carpets" that you can use your mouse on to control your ball's movement.
The real reason this is on the list is its place in my childhood as one of my first video game triumphs. Back in elementary school, my gifted class teacher pulled this out as a cute way to teach us some basic physics/geometry (I guess???) and its inherent difficulty took on a legendary status among my classmates. After many attempts (and failures) I managed to bring a run to the final hole and beat it on my last (or next-to-last, whatever) stroke.
There are a lot of technically better games below this one, but I wanted to give a shout-out to a classic bit of 80's MS-DOS game design that I have nothing but the fondest memories of.
