What's more important: Mental health or physical health?

I'm not putting a both option here as obviously we all want good health period. However if I had to choose I believe mental health is more important. Physical health can normally be fixed unless terminal but once mental health goes it's a lot harder to get back. That's if you even will.

With the current pandemic I go out for works still on a almost daily bases. While I am risking catching something that would be terrible for my physical health I believe not doing these walks will make my mental health worse. I also get exercise physically on these walks sure but it's more for my mental health.

I'll say mental. Being healthy but miserable just prolongs your misery. Alternately being well adjusted and productive is considered a life well lived even if it is cut short.

A lot of mental health issues stem from poor physical health. Poor diet and lack of exercise can lead to irritability, depression, low self esteem, etc

Mental health issues tend to lead to not looking after one's self. It becomes a feedback loop. Each definitely has it's own significance. Which one is more important to address at a given time can differ by situation.

If both are good and it comes down to a choice of which to maintain then mental is more crucial to being able to restore balance later on.

I'm going to say mental because if something is wrong mentally that often makes you neglect your physical health.

Lack of motivation leading to neglect, unhealthy coping mechanisms, self harm, self destruction.

It is much easier to kickstart your body into proper physical exercise, and when doing so it makes it much easier to kickstart your mind into proper mental exercise.

You're unlikely to catch covid just going out on walks outside, especially with social distancing and masks. This shouldn't really be a concern.

"Unlikely" doesn't rule it out. I also don't wear mask when walking/hiking nor do I social distance. It's not a major concern that I'll catch it though you're right.

Probably mental, given how pervasively it can affect all aspects of your life and how difficult it is to fix (to say nothing of the fact that society is still generally less sympathetic to mental health issues than physical ones). Mental health problems are generally less likely to kill you can physical ones, but they can have a greater impact on your life.

That said, this is very much a false dichotomy, and one that people have been far too willing to trot out as the pandemic drags on. It is very possible to follow Covid safety protocols without neglecting one's mental health. Going for walks is a good example: It's good for mental (and physical) health to get out of the house, but it's also not at all difficult to go for a walk without incurring a significant risk of contracting Covid (wear a mask when people are around, avoid crowded areas, maintain distance wherever possible...). You'll have to give up some things you like doing for safety's sake, such as going to bars, but it's not remotely impossible to take care of your mental health in spite of that by taking up new pastimes or modifying existing ones so you can do them safely (such as drinking with a small circle of friends instead of having large parties).

Very much depends. For some people struggling with mental health they would be physically healthy if not for being suicidal, abusing substances, starving oneself. Mental health can have a physical effect.

Can't it be both?...a balance?

If the body deteriorates, then mind follows. You're fat, ugly, out of shape, the girls won't talk to you, the guys (as best) will use you as 'practice' with zero love,......then you get bitter, angry, depressed, 'fuck the world', wear lulu-lemon yoga pants 5 times less than your size when going shopping at Wal-Mart wishing/deluding yourself to still be desirable to someone, and then get snappy with petty requests like, 'I wanted extra-pickles on my cheeseburger you dumb wage-cuck!" making your outrage a highlight on Worldstar.

Same is said for the mind, if that deteriorates, you get depressed, angry, bitter,...you don't want to move, so you're never physically active anymore, drugs and alcohol is used as a crutch which also affects the body. McDonald's and other high-calorie foods makes people happy... then the body goes.

I would say mental. My physical health has always been poor, but I have been able to survive. Mental struggles are usually more difficult to face as well.

Physical health can improve your mental health, but that's less true the other way around in terms of sitting on your ass 23 hours a day and being super happy is no better than smoking. Obviously being miserable has physical manifestations and lowers your overall health too, but sad sacks, trust me: work out and it will only make everything better.

There are plenty of mentally fucked up people in great physical shape though. It clearly doesn't work for everyone

It depends on the context. A person feeling terrible because they can't express their sexuality is extremely minor compared to bubonic plague. Likewise a person suffering suicidal depression is far more concerning than a cold. I would say physical health is more important since it not only contains a potential risk of death but can spread to other people easily and scar/damage/cripple/etc a person for life. However humans have become increasingly good at managing the physical health aspects and have even eliminated a few diseases and are massively hampering/close to eliminating a few more. So right now it's more important to focus on mental health since it's gone largely untouched for centuries.

I guess a better way to put it is that mental health is more important so long as the extremes of physical health are managed properly.
