Like no one who is being intellectually honest can call Cyberpunk one of the ten worst games of the year. Ten worst launches maybe, but a lot of the problems are already fixed.

He's been going on about CDPR's dishonest reputation as pro-consumer, highlighting the crunch environment that's been going on behind the scenes, and the review... scandal's not quite the right word, but it was also dishonest. It's less that the games are necessarily bad (some definitely are), and more that he's highlighting something he dislikes about the industry.

I truly do believe Jim just is that mad with the AAA industry that he is not feeling generous with whatever game they are releasing.

I wish someone would have the courage to make a list with games that no one has ever heard of since it is much more likely they are the worst games.

I think that Jim is more or less grading on a curve here, which makes sense to do as far as creating a more interesting list.

I actually kind of enjoyed Battlegrounds. It wasnt amazing or anything but certainly not one of the worst.

you need some minimum standard of relevance for this sort of thing, otherwise I can probably find you a thousand games made this year that are worse than the Avengers game.

not including that awful Fast and Furious game does seem like an oversight though

Somewhere along the way, Sterling's schtick started getting old for me. I'm not the most discerning critic or anything, but it felt to me that he found himself obligated to maintain a specific stance on the industry's shortcomings, many of which are entirely deserved. However, the outrage began to feel manufactured to me. There were still glimpses of what felt like genuine love for video games, and occasionally you saw that twinkle in his eyes of real delight, but after a while, the deluge of negativity became forced.

He's very insightful in his longer videos and he definitely has a way to incite and rile. He's great at it.

Yeah, sometime in the last year or two I went from subscribing for a weekly dose of 'trippple aigggh' nonsense, to watching infrequently, to realizing he's not quite what he was or my tastes or tolerances changed leading to me unsubscribing. I might be a bit less up to speed on some of the prime gaming drama that transpires, but in return I get a bit less drama absorbed into my brain.

Jim Sterling's content isn't really to my tastes unfortunately. I'm kind of tired of the old 'angry video game nerd' tropes and dwelling on negativity and if someone's gonna talk about stuff they don't like I'd rather it be from a more constructive point of view, even if I do generally agree with his opinions. I'm sure not all of their content is like that, maybe it's just the stuff I run into, but every time I see their stuff it kinda reinforces my first blush opinions of them.

I mean all you have to do is hear about their love for Hades (they've said it may rank as one of their favorite games ever!) to know that it's definitely not a schtick or forced or anything, there are absolutely many video games they still love. It's just that they've gotten tired over the years of the industry doing the shit it does, and so is very passionate about wanting to address how fucked it is. Does that lead to many videos that veer towards not everything being sunshine and rainbows? Sure, and that's certainly not for everyone so more power to you for knowing it's not to your taste. But to call it forced or a schtick or an obligation solely for the fact that they don't want to always talk positively about the industry is quite frankly a bit insulting to them and their content.

Personally for me it's not the negativity but how Sterling reveling in the negativity has become kind of their brand. I hate arguing over tone but that's legit what it is for me. I get way more mileage with both well-reasoned constructive criticism from people who like AAA gaming but can't be silent about its flaws and from scalding takedowns from people who cannot stand it. Sterling meanwhile takes this weird medium and the cutesy, irreverent way they present their points just takes all the weight out of it even if I agree with them. The criticism somehow becomes so over-the-top negative that it just falls flat.

I can see your argument, Jim made a video about this very topic. They discovered that despite everyone clamoring for more positive videos, they just dont do well and Jim is stuck between covering good stuff and surviving on the youtube algorithm.

Though I still think Jims arguments are well reasoned and constructive. I can see how they come across as forced, but I dont feel they are.
