Like a lot of people my age I stopped watching somewhere around season 11-12. Im on S13:6 right now. Its still making me laugh but I can already tell the humor is becoming a lot more overt, like someone will say a line of dialogue and then it cuts away for a second to focus on the joke thing

I did enjoy the movie back when it came out. Im curious if it actually does suck or if its just not quite as good as the writing they had back in the 90s.

I like seasons 2-14. 1 has its charms, but felt like a slightly different show. It didn't have its (ass) groove yet.

Season 15 is where it lost me. I did not like it, nor many that followed. I remember occasionally watching the odd episode after that, but it was bad for the following 10-15+ years from that point on. It got kinda watchable again recently, but it really should've stopped at season 14, had a movie (not the one we got - I hated it - but something like that 'was possibly gonna be the finale' Christmas episode), and let nostalgia win. It doesn't really have a place anymore. IMO, other than stupid episodes with bad writing, the worst thing that happened to it was trying to remain contemporary. It should've stayed planted in the 90s.

Okay so there was a joke in this episode where theyre picking a board game and Lisa lists off all the different Monopoly versions they have

The gag ends with Marge just saying lets stick with regular Monopoly, but the last one presented is Edna Krabbopoly with Barts teacher on the cover

the thing that makes this funny though is that they own that game! Which one of them would have bought that?!

I saw something in a compilation of Smithers being gay clips, that perfectly summarizes how bad the humor has gotten:

In this clip, Smithers is on fire, and runs over to Mr. Burns asking for help, saying he is "flaming"

Mr. Burns looks at the camera as Smithers is running around in the background with a look on his face like "Smithers? Flaming? the joke writes itself"

but in the past Mr. Burns would have been super oblivious to Smithers advances, or stop them while not fully grasping them. This was one of those "too obvious it's bad" character dynamic ruining jokes.

this clip:

Now, if the show was always like that, it could work. But in the golden era this joke likely would have got you laughed out of the writers room for being too obvious it isn't funny.

I think season 14 or 15 is the point where I first started to think, hmm this might be bad, though in hindsight I also see why a lot of season 11ish eps are bad. It was 17 or 18 where I stopped watching and I've seen like two new eps since.

Kinda crazy that what I once thought of as the bad "new" seasons are not even the midway point now. The thought that season 15 could be considered old/early Simpsons now and that there was an entire era after that is depressing

Aren't Homer and Marge supposed to be like late 30s or early 40s or something? They definitely feel way older than that.

Something I never understood in the Simpsons is that Homer and Marge are supposed to be mid/late 30s but their eldest child is 10. I thought Marge got knocked up shortly after HS or at least they imply that they weren't really ready, but they would've been dating for like ten years at that point

Late 30s, I believe 38
They were dating for sometime before getting knocked up/married.
I am pretty sure even in the early seasons homer is in his later 30s (I believe the 38 is stated in a pre10 season) So the kids were born way after High School.
Even at the earliest age homer have been given, 34, still 5/6 years after high school before marge is pregnant

oh yeah, it's fucked, like them being in high school in the 70's is totally boinked by newer seasons, 1 episode has Marge going to college in the 90's and Homer inventing grunge music.

In my opinion thats right around when the show gets really good

The first couple seasons Im usually too distracted by the animation and weird sounding voices

Counter to this the past few weeks i've slowly been making my way through the Simpsons, but starting with s1 e1.

My thoughts halfway through the first season: animation not nearly as bad as I remember(though Homer looks off and his voice is a little weird here), and while not every episode is great, there is a lot of well written humour to be found. Before this deep dive I always remembered the first season as being poorly drawn and forgettable, and I feel like I was flat out wrong.

maybe its because a lot of us were younger so we always wanted to watch the new episodes that we thought looked better and flashier

yeah

had to look up on IMDb which episode that was cause I generally dont remember the titles, that one seemed kinda weird how dramatic and sorta grounded they made their marriage seem

marriage is long and complicated though much like life and each one has its own good and bad aspects, so I didnt hate the portrayal entirely
