It is an automatic, and I love the design where the time dial isn't the whole watch.

Now, I did see some cheaper automatics I kind of liked the look of from Orient and Seiko for like half the price, but I like the look of this one more.

That's pretty sharp. I like the case styling, similar profile to some of mine, clean lines and not gaudy. I saw a video on Youtube, wasn't in English but you do get a good look at the watch.

im just trying to hunt down some coupies for this website. Jomashop had it the cheapest ive seen at $300, and while I have never bought from them I trust them. I found a $10 off coupon code(and by default I get free shipping for spending over x), but I dont know if I can top that.

and I did watch that video, I think, because I was kind of annoyed it wasn't in English, but the I felt good for any Vietnamese(?) people watching because I doubt they get too many native language videos floating around the Net.

I think the face of the watch is nice. I hate how leather bands look though, but other than that, that's a badass watch.

The other two I saw I liked were these. Not necessarily these colors but the same design:

Orient

https://www.jomashop.com/orient-classical-watch-raak0002s.html

I like how it has a moon phase dial, combined with the day dial and date marker. Though for such a nice price, all those features, i dont know if I should be wary. But I like the look of the Tissot better

Seiko
https://www.jomashop.com/seiko-watch-srn045p2.html

This is simpler than the orient, and cheaper. I like it well enough but again the Tissot wins out.

I...can't pull the trigger on it. Why? I love the design, but it looks like it may be a little bigger than what I wanted, and it could easily get caught on stuff if i wore it to work, and i go to maybe 1-2 dress occasions a year honestly.

That and since this is a belated christmas gift, my mom just gave me her gift limit $ to spend on a watch, so since it isn't a gift in the traditional sense I am realizing this may not make smart financial sense seeing the money come out of my bank account(even if it was her money i put in there for the purchase).

sigh.... i don't know.

Really I should just be smart and buy a cheaper Seiko or Orient that looks snazzy and be done with it.

I haven't bought a watch in a long while, so i'm kinda out of the game(some people have me tagged to this day as watch guy. for me it was more of a fad, but I still love watches, but when I buy one now it'll be a serious thing and not just yet another cheaper casio digital watch "just to have")

I'm familiar with your feelings, and it'd be wrong of me to push you into or out of the purchase. The price isn't exactly what most people would consider cheap, and it's a personal decision making that kind of investment. That said, on the point quoted, if you don't have anything similar you could always visit a store and ask to try on a few watches of approximate size. Actually having one on your wrist will give you a good idea of when it's just too unwieldy. I have one that's humongous, 45mm diameter, about 14/15mm thick and 24mm lugs. It originally came with a shiny metal band and, although I did like it, just seemed kind of ridiculous and heavy on my wrist. After a while I dressed it down with a nylon Zulu strap and really enjoy wearing it now.

I feel like the 12mm case thickness may be too much and not necessarily the diameter of 39mm or lug to lug(which i don't even know)

It's entirely possible. Thicker watches can take a bit of acclimation, although 12 would still seem pretty manageable to me. I have one that's kind of smallish but fat, 40mm and 14mm, and it feels pretty comfortable. However, that's my wrist, and I did buy it after that huge motherfucker. My perspective may have been skewed somewhat.

I kind of want to see if i can get a Tissot Visodate in auto for 300(edit: doesnt look likely). I love the look, and while it isn't as unique as the Courtrier above, I think this would be a choice I could live with.

https://tinyurl.com/y7dak4fv

this is quartz but they have autos for more money

I really like tissot but most of their automatics are in the 400+ range, making the OP an actual deal.

Aesthetically, I think I actually do prefer that one, but that could just be my aversion to offset faces and silver being more my color. Still a bigger fan of the first one though, just because spring power is more fun to me. Of course, as you know, that's just my bias, they both seem like very fine watches.

So I did buy the one in the OP because after yet another search I havent found anything that wows me more and I am already having regrets. I should have got something with a more useful display, maybe a little thinner... but I am going to see when it gets here what I think, and it I don't like it I will return it.

I'm just going to stop looking at watches for now and see what happens when it gets here.

I liked that one at first but the more I looked at it I didn't like it. Plus I decided that I am firm on wanting an automatic just for something different.

Ultimately, the return should be free or cheap(just a small P+H fee) so I'm going to see if I like the one in the OP when it gets here and if not i'll send it back.

The problem is, there are thousands of watches, but the more traditional looking ones I like all had something off about them. Like, I like the look of the quartz tissot visodates better than the autos, but I want an auto, and a lot of ones that nailed their design were outside of my price range.

Okay, lets do this again. I now think I have actually found THE watch.

I am likely going to return the one in the OP, though I haven't gotten it yet. It looks sweet but I need something functional.

I've been trying like hell to find a watch that checks off all the boxes I have, and this one just about does it

The Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic.

http://dvciknd2kslsk.cloudfront.net/images/watchfinderimages/Watch/Hamilton/Jazzmaster/45097-2008679217.jpg

It checks off the most boxes, with some things as an added bonus

automatic
some numbers on dial
date
seconds hand(rather than seconds subdial)
minute indicators(60 at 12, 5 at 1, etc)

then it has snazzy blue hands and like, i'm sold!

this is going to be more than I wanted to spend, but that is okay, because I am getting an actual, useable piece of technology. The one in the OP looks very nice, but I can't really use it while working.

Autos are cool, but my skin practically eats leather.

That particular watch is low key and somehow still ugly AF.

In my case, quartz never "goes off" and any watch I buy will end up living on a nato band u less we're going to a wedding or a wake, and if I'm a pallbearer, it's going to be the factory strap.

Okay so in today's episode of "the wheels keep on turning" ....

I got the Tissot in the mail today, and I wanted to return it, but I opened the box first to look at it and it looks so good in person...I kinda want to keep it, and later on buy a cheaper automatic that has the features I want(or save up a chunk and get something like the Jazzmaster above). But I also feel like this may be a consequence of having it in front of me.

If I could wear it to work once and get my fun out of it, I think I'd be satisfied enough to return it only because I am itching to wear something new. But I don't want to wear it with all the plastic film and tags still on it. Cannot remove(tags at least) if I want to return...

One problem I am having with this Tissot but maybe this isn't a problem and just how autos work(or some autos).

I noticed when I was setting the time/date the date changes over before midnight. Last night at 11:30 it read 10, when it was still the 9th, but I couldn't confirm when it switched over.

Either autos tend to report the new day a little early or this is a defect. I am not super well versed in automatics to say.

I just set the time/date again now that I am outside of the danger zone(9PM-2AM or something it is recommended to not set the date as it can mess up the watch) and the date switches at 10:15 "pm"(in quotes since this watch doesnt have a concept of AM/PM necessarily)...not anywhere close to midnight.

I don't know that they are all alike, but I can say all mechanical watches I own have a period of time over which the date is gradually changed. I think it would be too great a force for these little motors to have it switch in one instant.
I just checked 2, one started the change around 10pm and lasted until about midnight, the other started about 11pm and clicked near 11:50.

I decided to return the Tissot and I did buy a Hamilton jazzmaster.

Maybe it isn't defective, but when turning the hands the date would change around 10:10, and while I didn't track wearing it exactly I know I checked at 11:30 pm one day and the date had changed.

This hamilton, when setting, the date switches over almost exactly at midnight. I'll see in a little if the date does change at midnight or before(just got it today). Though this is talking about moving the hands and not using the quick date feature that just cycles through the numbers. I don't know if it makes a difference but one video I watched the guy said he will quick change the date(outside of the danger zone of 9PM-2AM or so) to the day before, then turn the hands to set it and have it advance one day that way. So, thats why rather than using the quick change I am just turning the hands.

Maybe there was no defect with the Tissot and I am just inexperienced with automatic watches. But I noticed the date had switched at 11:30(not sure when it actually did change) one night, and even if it isn't defective I don't particularly want something that inaccurate.

That is a nice looking watch. I saw some watches in my search where they had the big minute markers like that, but I went with something a little more traditional

Anyways, I bought this one, from a different site for a little less money

https://www.jomashop.com/hamilton-jazzmaster-viewmatic-automatic-blue-dial-mens-watch-h32515145.html

I like it so far. I am going to take it to a place to remove some links from the watch band, because I am not experienced with it and despite watching a video that made it seem super easy(Hamiltons have a slightly different link setup) I tried and decided to stop because it wasnt going as smoothly for me.

If you mean the blue hands Jazzmaster I posted earlier:

I saw it on a website for 450. lowest price around. When I decided to return the Tissot I went to buy it and they had sold out, and I couldn't find it at that price point anywhere else on the internet just about. So, since I had my heart now set on a Jazzmaster Viewmatic, I searched for a nice one around the 450 range( 500+ is the avg price for this style Viewmatic), and this is the best I could do.

But, while the blue hands were snazzy, this one is also very tight. That picture in that link had me worried. I do not care too much for that style of blue. But then I saw this video of one being held, and the color looked almost purple, so I was sold, and also tired of watch searching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjVuy6sWM7g

So that color is also deceiving. The real answer to the dial color is some of the stock photo and some of this video. in the right light it does look a little purple.
